One of the world’s biggest AI companies wants a deal with Canada. Is sovereignty the trade-off?

One of the world’s biggest artificial intelligence companies is knocking on Canada’s door, potentially armed with an offer that — under normal circumstances — would be hard to refuse.

OpenAI is building a global network of data centres to store the massive amounts of information collected by its services, including ChatGPT — and Canada’s cheap energy could help with that.

The company believes AI and its associated infrastructure will be the base of future economic development, and it says it wants to help spread what it calls “democratic AI.” It recently launched “OpenAI for countries” to pounce on the opportunity.

We could power AI by putting our millions of unneeded foreign workers on treadmills.

Kinew says drop tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles to get Chinese duties dropped

WINNIPEG – Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew is asking the prime minister to scrap Canada’s 100 per cent tariff on Chinese electric vehicles in return for China lifting its tariffs on Canadian canola and pork.

Kinew says in a letter to Mark Carney on Saturday that while he believes protecting Canada’s vehicle industry is important, he says the country’s approach “has created a two-front trade war that disproportionally affects Western Canada.”

The premier says in the letter that China’s tariffs — widely seen as a response to Canada imposing the electric vehicle levy — have already caused a sharp drop in canola prices and that one vertically integrated pork producer in Manitoba is reporting a $19 million negative impact on an annual basis.

Teenage scouts cruise high-end GTA neighbourhoods and parking lots with shopping lists of vehicles they could never afford themselves.

They hope to make $75 to $100 for spotting a vehicle worth stealing: A Lexus RX, a Toyota Highlander, a Ram truck, a Honda CR-V, maybe a Range Rover.

Toronto has seen an auto theft boom since the beginning of the pandemic — and these young scouts are a vital part of it

Privacy watchdog says he was never consulted on bill allowing secret internet bans

Canada’s privacy watchdog says he was never consulted on a federal bill that could let cabinet secretly shut down a Canadian’s internet or phone access.

Blacklock’s Reporter says Privacy Commissioner Philippe Dufresne told MPs the issue “never came up” before the Trudeau government tabled Bill C-8, legislation that would give Ottawa sweeping new powers over telecommunications companies in the name of cybersecurity.

Michael Murphy: British multiculturalism has failed

LONDON — Now we know what globalizing the intifada looks like. In Manchester last week, a rabbi addressed his congregation in a robe stained with blood. Hours earlier, on Yom Kippur, Judaism’s holiest day, a jihadi terrorist rammed a car into worshippers at the gates of a synagogue before going on a stabbing spree. By the time officers shot the attacker, two were dead and four more injured, some from accidental police fire.

American spirit exports to Canada ‘plummeted’ 85%, says U.S. trade group

American spirit exports to Canada “plummeted” 85 per cent in the second quarter of 2025, with the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States calling the situation “very troubling” as consumers in key international markets opt for alternatives to U.S.-made products amid trade tensions.

The numbers come as American alcohol largely remains off Canadian shelves and unavailable in bars and restaurants as a response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to impose tariffs on Canadian goods in early March.

Tel Aviv – Trump as Cyrus The Great

But terror group refuses to disarm calling into question key points in US president’s peace deal

Hamas will relinquish control of Gaza but won’t disarm, a source close to the terror group’s negotiation committee said.

Israel is bracing to receive all 20 hostages as part of the initial deal to end the war, with the vice-president JD Vance saying they could be handed over “any moment now”.

Israel says the exchange will happen on Monday morning, when Donald Trump is due to arrive in Israel before flying to Egypt for a truce ceremony.
