PINSKY: ‘Hamas is coming for you’ shouted at Winnipeg pavilion

At Folklorama’s Israel Pavilion, Shalom Square, held at the Jewish Community Centre in Winnipeg this past week, attendees faced something that should be unthinkable in Canada. An unruly mob openly celebrated Hamas, a designated terrorist organization, directly harassing Jewish community members, their supporters, and guests of all faiths and nationalities for several hours. Frightening threats were shouted, including vile sexualized slurs aimed at women and girls and menacing declarations like, “Hamas is coming for you.” This was not just offensive speech — it was a breach of Canadian law, a violation of the basic right to safety, and a profound failure of leadership.

This starts right at the top, but hey now we can burn pavilions at Folkfest!

These Days, ‘Christian Nationalist’ Means Nothing More Than Faithful and Conservative

The left loves to slap faithful conservatives with the canard of “Christian nationalism.” The strict definition of “Christian nationalism” is a complete takeover of the government with Christians governing every aspect of society. It’s not a feasible prospect because the theological and denominational variety among Christians would make policy decisions difficult to implement.

Labour leaders demand Carney government change the law used to end Air Canada impasse

Canada’s union leaders want the Liberals to stop using a contentious piece of the country’s labour code and are prepared to back Air Canada’s flight attendants in their illegal strike to draw a “line in the concrete’” with the Carney government.

A tentative deal was reached early Tuesday between Air Canada and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), but not before the federal government had invoked Section 107 of the Canada Labour Code to force flight attendants back to work. That section allows the jobs minister to direct the Canada Industrial Relations Board to order parties into arbitration or end strikes to “secure industrial peace.” The Liberal government has used it eight times since 2024 to end strikes or lockouts, including work stoppages at railways and port strikes.

Toronto teacher fired for wearing blackface to school should get his job back, arbitrator rules

Inspired by Justin’s example.

An arbitrator has ordered that a white Toronto teacher who was terminated after he showed up at school in blackface for Halloween and told people he was dressed as a zombie should be reinstated and compensated for all wages and benefits lost in the last 20 months.

Gorian Surlan showed remorse for his actions, according to an arbitrator, who substituted a nearly two-year suspension for the high school teacher’s penalty. Surlan, who had been teaching for 19 years, came to work at Parkdale Collegiate Institute in black face makeup and black clothing on Oct. 29, 2021.

Continuing purge, Gabbard revokes security clearances of 37 former officials

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard began a fresh strike Tuesday against national security officials whom President Donald Trump deems political enemies, announcing she had revoked the clearances of 37 people, including several currently serving U.S. intelligence officials.

Gabbard’s unusual action targeted current and former officials involved in a 2017 assessment of Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election that the intelligence czar has sought to undermine, individuals involved in Trump’s impeachments during his first term, and an array of others who worked for former Democratic presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden.

Poilievre will have to ‘soften the edges’, act prime ministerial as he returns to Ottawa: experts

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre will have to hold the government accountable while showing he can appeal to a wider set of Canadian voters, as he gets ready to head back to the House of Commons following his resounding byelection win, experts say.

After losing his seat in the Ottawa-area riding he’d held for two decades to a political rookie in April’s general election, Poilievre won a Monday byelection in the rural Alberta riding of Battle River—Crowfoot with 80 per cent of the vote.

Now, when the House returns on Sept. 15, Poilievre will face off against new Liberal Prime Minister Mark Carney for the first time in question period.

California park ranger fired after helping hang transgender pride flag on popular Yosemite monolith

Non-Employed Non-Binary Park Ranger

A non-binary park ranger was fired by Yosemite National Park after they were caught hanging a transgender pride flag from the park’s famous El Capitan rock formation in May.

Shannon “SJ” Joslin, 35, was first hired as a ranger and wildlife biologist at the park in 2021 — their dream job that they said was stripped away in a violation of their First Amendment right.

Canada is running out of runway for its F-35 review

There was an interesting — albeit brief — recent eruption of clarity in the ongoing saga of whether Canada intends to proceed with the full order of American-made F-35 fighters.

It was courtesy of the U.S. ambassador to Canada, Pete Hoekstra, who perhaps spoke the quiet part out loud last week in an interview with Canadian independent podcaster Jasmin Laine.

Hoekstra, a no-nonsense Republican from Michigan, was asked about the Liberal government’s review of the $27.7-billion purchase of stealth fighters and the possibility that after delivery of the first tranche of jets, Canada could decide to fill the rest of its order with another type of aircraft.

Putin Calls Zelensky the West’s Illegitimate Puppet. Can He Talk Peace With Him?

If Russian President Vladimir Putin agrees to meet his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, as urged by President Trump, he will come face-to-face with a man he has spent 3½ years excoriating as an illegitimate leader and puppet.

Negotiating directly with Zelensky would run sharply counter to the narrative Putin has carefully constructed and sold to Russians in an effort to justify his 2022 invasion of Ukraine: that the war is part of a broader conflict with the West in which Zelensky and his country are mere pawns.

Trump’s call for a meeting puts Putin in a bind. If he declines, he risks angering the U.S. president, who has already threatened him with more sanctions. But sitting down with Zelensky could damage him politically with the Russian elite and the broader public.

Canadian soldiers suspended after Nazi salute video surfaces

The Canadian military has suspended five active members after a video emerged allegedly showing them with other individuals who gave Nazi salutes.

Lt.-Gen. Mike Wright, the head of the Canadian army, said in a statement issued Tuesday that he was “deeply disturbed and profoundly disappointed” by the contents of the video, which he said he was made aware of on Aug. 6.

Wright said soon after the video was shared with the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) by a member of the public, five serving members were identified, who have now been suspended from military duties while a disciplinary investigation is underway. The matter was then referred to military police.

Was it just a bout of drunken silliness?

Israel calls up 60,000 reservists ahead of planned Gaza City offensive

The Israeli military says it is calling up about 60,000 reservists ahead of a planned ground offensive to capture and occupy all of Gaza City.

A military official said the reservists would report for duty in September and that most of the troops mobilised for the offensive would be active-duty personnel.

They added that troops were already operating in the Zeitoun and Jabalia areas as part of the preparations for the plan, which Defence Minister Israel Katz approved on Tuesday and will be put to the security cabinet later this week.

Without property rights, free speech is hard. Just ask a preacher or a punk

My phone beeped.

“You know where the Black Lab is, right?”

My friend had tickets to a concert. But she couldn’t, for the life of her, figure out where the venue was. This is not unusual in the Vancouver punk scene, where the most vibrant locales operate under cover of night. Instead of advertisements listing a street address, they read “Location: Ask a punk.” The idea is, if you’re trustworthy, you’ll know someone who can tip you in. (BTW: the Black Lab, now defunct, was a punk space in the Downtown East Side.)
