Carbon offsetting ‘does little to help the environment’

International schemes to prevent deforestation overstate their own effectiveness, a study has found

It is possible that the only thing your carbon offsets are offsetting is your conscience, scientists have suggested.

A study has claimed that popular schemes to prevent deforestation, funded through carbon credits, are systematically overstating their own effectiveness.

The Redd+ scheme is an international protocol, overseen by the United Nations, for protecting forests. Its success is judged by comparing forest cover in protected regions to what it would have been had deforestation continued at the predicted rate.
