When ‘saving lives’ with bike lanes means costing them

“Bike lanes save lives.” That’s the slogan repeated endlessly by the cycling lobby, shouted as if it’s beyond question. But slogans don’t save lives — emergency response times do.

And according to data obtained through a Freedom of Information request by Balance on Bloor, the bike lanes on Bloor Street West are causing delays of up to two and a half minutes for ambulances, fire trucks, and police cars. In the world of emergency medicine, that delay is a death sentence.
