Canada isn’t looking to join EU, Carney says, but still wants closer ties

Carney, Macron – Neither has an ideal domestic life from the look of it

Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada is “looking for a closer partnership” with the European Union — but not to become a member.

While speaking from the NATO summit in the Netherlands — where he announced Canada’s promise to spend five per cent of gross domestic product on defence by 2035 — Carney was asked whether he has given any thought to trying to join the bloc of European nations.

“The short answer is no,” he said. “That’s not the intent. That’s not the pathway we’re on.”

Bullshit.

NATO members step up spending, but doubts about US remain

From the perspective of European NATO allies, it all went to plan: A short, one-page and five-point declaration, a nice group photo and even dinner with the Dutch king and queen. At the NATO summit at The Hague, US President Donald Trump was also in good spirits.

When he addressed the press, Trump claimed credit for ending the war in Iran and for getting NATO allies to increase their defense spending to 5% of their national GDPs by 2035.

He praised European members of the alliance for “the love and passion they showed for their countries,” but also said they needed the US. He hailed the new pledge as a “big win for Europe and for western civilization.”

Carney’s Liberal Gov’t Funded BC’s Purchase Of Ferries From Communist China That Freeland Went Elbows Up On

Federal infrastructure bank provided $1-billion in financing for BC Ferries purchase of four new Chinese-made ships

The federal government’s Canada Infrastructure Bank provided $1-billion in financing for BC Ferries’ plan to buy four new ships from a Chinese state-owned shipyard, a fact that Transport Minister Chrystia Freeland did not mention last week when she sharply criticized the purchase.

Ms. Freeland sent a strongly worded letter last week to B.C. Transportation Minister Mike Farnworth expressing her “great consternation and disappointment” with the planned purchase.

The letter referenced a previous $75-million loan by the CIB for four other ferries and Ottawa’s annual grant for ferry operations, but did not mention that the bank is also providing $1-billion in low-interest loans for the specific purchase she was criticizing.

CIA director says Iran’s nuclear sites ‘severely damaged’

The head of the CIA has said US strikes “severely damaged” Iran’s nuclear facilities and set them back years, diverging from a leaked intelligence report that angered President Donald Trump by downplaying the raid’s impact.

John Ratcliffe, the US spy agency’s director, said key sites had been destroyed, though he stopped short of declaring that Iran’s nuclear programme had been eliminated outright.

It comes a day after a leaked preliminary assessment from a Pentagon intelligence agency suggested core components of Iran’s nuclear programme remained intact after the US bombings.

Trevor Tombe: How much did Canada’s trade retaliation and boycotts actually hurt the U.S.?

While the broad 25 percent tariffs once floated by President Donald Trump never fully materialized, Canada’s retaliatory measures—covering over 1,800 U.S. product lines, representing more than $90 billion in Canadian imports from the U.S. last year—remain largely in place. Though some exemptions and supports have softened the impact (and created confusion), the economic consequences of these tariffs are starting to take shape.

Newly released trade data for April 2025 allow us to take a detailed look at how Canadian imports have shifted in response.

Trump blasts Zohran Mamdani as a ‘100% Communist Lunatic’ in scathing NYC mayoral rant: ‘Democrats have crossed the line’

President Trump blasted Zohran Mamdani’s politics – and looks – Wednesday after the socialist’s stunning upset in New York’s Democratic mayoral primary.

“Democrats have crossed the line by elevating a 100% Communist Lunatic,” Trump railed in a Truth Social post.

“We’ve had Radical Lefties before, but this is getting a little ridiculous,” he added.

Carney’s ‘nation-building’ projects bill faces uncertain future in unpredictable Senate

Prime Minister Mark Carney’s point-person in the Senate is pressing for the swift passage of the government’s landmark “nation-building” projects bill, but he isn’t certain he can get it through unamended before the upper house is scheduled to break for the summer.

In an interview with CBC News on Wednesday, Sen. Marc Gold, the government representative charged with shepherding C-5 through the Red Chamber, said he wants the bill to pass this week with no changes.

But, with senators essentially free agents after a series of changes under former prime minister Justin Trudeau, it’s hard to say what the outcome will be — given the criticism from some Indigenous leaders and environmentalists, Gold said.

Trudeau packed the senate like Liberal sardines.

Make Iran Great Again? ‘Tehrangeles’ community in LA reflects on US strikes

A woman in a “Make America Great Again” hat leads a chant for “regime change” in Iran.

The crowds dance and wave Iranian, Israeli and American flags as Persian music blasts. Car horns beep in support but also some annoyance in LA’s gridlocked traffic.

Protests outside the West LA Federal Building are a common site, but even by LA standards this one is unusual, happening under the watchful eyes of armed US Marines, controversially ordered there by President Trump during protests against immigration raids.

Surprise: German Leftists Unhappy With Asylum Housing When It’s Near Their Home

It is said that people get more right-wing as they grow older. A quicker way to achieve this appears to be having a large number of asylum seekers housed nearby.

Almost three-quarters of voters in Kreuzberg—described as one of Germany’s most liberal districts—backed the three major left-wing (pro-migration) parties in the last federal election. The more right-wing parties did not achieve double-digit support.

Biden Staffer Directing Autopen Didn’t Know Who Final Authorization Came From

Neera Tanden, former head of Biden’s Domestic Policy Council, admitted that she authorized autopen signatures without knowledge of who issued the final approval in a closed-door hearing before the House Oversight Committee on Tuesday, according to Fox News.

In her role as staff secretary, before she was moved to the Domestic Policy Council, Tanden “was responsible for handling the the flow of documents to and from the President,” sending decision memos to “Biden’s inner circle” and affixing the president’s autopen signature to the documents when she received approval. Tanden was not privy to any of the decision-making process or who was giving the final approval. She rarely interacted with Biden. The system, according to her opening statement, was a relic of previous administrations.

The Autopen authorized it.

Anti-Nuke Activists Fight for Iran’s Nukes

The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons won a Nobel Peace Prize for its opposition to the existence of nuclear weapons. Its slogan was ‘We must eliminate nuclear weapons before they eliminate us.’ Unless the nukes are in the hands of Islamic terrorists.

After Israel launched its campaign to end Iran’s nuclear weapons program, ICAN denied that Iran was developing nuclear weapons and instead condemned Israel for striking Iran’s nukes.
