Green Party dropped from leaders’ debates for not running enough candidates

The Leaders’ Debates Commission, which is tasked with organizing the French and English debates, has removed the Green Party from federal leaders’ debates for failing to meet participation requirements.

“Deliberately reducing the number of candidates running for strategic reasons is inconsistent with the Commission’s interpretation of party viability, which criterion (iii) was designed to measure,” the Commission said in a statement Wednesday.

China Would Lose a ‘Trade War’ With the US—’Gradually, then Suddenly’

China’s trade war bluff may backfire as the U.S. pushes allies to choose between a rogue economic actor and a flawed but fairer partner with unmatched global power.

No one wants a “trade war” with China, or for that matter with any nation. Nonetheless, China has been waging one for years and is now locked in a tariff recalibration with the Trump administration.

In this American effort to find trade parity and equity, China can do some short-term damage to the U.S., especially in terms of ceasing exports of some pharmaceuticals, phones, and computers. But ultimately, it cannot win—and will eventually lose catastrophically. It will likely accept that reality sooner rather than later.

We are only in the first week of the escalating rhetoric and tariffs. But already China is appealing to its Asian rivals, Australia, and the EU to join in fighting the supposed American bully.

The Liberals are ensnared by dirty politics

The Liberals’ cynical brand of politics is nothing new—and Carney clearly doesn’t care about accountability

The Liberal Party has always done a good job creating a vague sense that they’re the proverbial “adults in the room,” more technocrats than politicians, above the fray, distinct from the Conservatives with their ideological fixations. To people who’ve seen the Liberal machine up close, this is laughable—just ask Jody Wilson-Raybould.

Russia’s forces aren’t as strong as they claim, say captured Chinese fighters

Two Chinese citizens captured fighting against Ukraine said they were “fed lies” by Russia and that Vladimir Putin’s forces were not as strong as they claimed.

In an evening press conference organised by the Ukrainian security service, Wang Guanjung and Zhang Renbo said: “All Russia fed us are lies. They’re fake. Russia isn’t as strong as they claim, and Ukraine isn’t as backward as they say.”

Manchester bomber’s brother Hashem Abedi given spork after prison attack

Embarrassed that regular utensils are considered more dangerous.

Hashem Abedi has been given a spork to eat his food and transferred back to Belmarsh prison, where he previously launched a vicious attack on prison guards, The Times can reveal.

It has triggered fresh concerns about the Prison Service’s handling of the Manchester Arena terrorist, who allegedly attacked three officers on Saturday with boiling cooking oil from a separation centre — known as a jail within a jail — at HMP Frankland in County Durham, which is one of the highest security jails in the UK.

Peter MacKinnon: Rein in universities’ race-based hiring

With race-based appointments to academic jobs in Canada now common, it should not be surprising that there are business opportunities embedded in them, and it is notable that a new search consultancy has entered and risen in the field: BIPOC Executive Search Inc., based in Toronto. The firm has a team of 15 and specializes in the recruitment of Black, Indigenous and racialized candidates. It has current job postings for 12 executive positions at three Toronto universities (York, U of T and OCAD), and no doubt the promise of many more as Canadian universities rush to make race-based appointments to their academic and administrative ranks. With a 15-member team, BIPOC Inc. needs plenty of work to meet payroll.

Sanity returns in the UK – Supreme Court backs ‘biological’ definition of woman while perverse backwaters like Canada cling to weird beliefs

Judges at the UK Supreme Court have unanimously ruled that a woman is defined by biological sex under equalities law.

It marks the culmination of a long-running legal battle which could have major implications for how sex-based rights apply across Scotland, England and Wales.

Judges sided with campaign group For Women Scotland, which brought a case against the Scottish government arguing that sex-based protections should only apply to people that are born female.

But not in Canada’s Liberal Party of course.

BROWN: You don’t want people with ethics like this, running government

With less than two weeks until Election Day on April 28, a palpable sense of hope and momentum is sweeping back across Canada. After a decade of Liberal mismanagement, voters are ready to reclaim their Canadian dream.

At the National Citizens Coalition, we’re witnessing a groundswell of support for a shared vision that prioritizes prosperity, integrity, and a proud, self-respecting future — a vision starkly at odds with a faltering, embittered, gerontocratic Liberal campaign.

Bjorn Lomborg: Global warming policies hurt the poor

We are often told by climate campaigners that climate change is especially pernicious because over coming decades it will disproportionately harm the poorest people, both in Canada and the world. But they miss that climate policies are directly hurting the poor right now.

More energy leads to better, healthier, longer lives. Less energy means fewer opportunities. Climate policies demand we pay more for less reliable energy. The impact is greater if you’re poorer: the wealthy might grumble about higher costs but can generally absorb them; the poor are forced to cut back

Carney says pipelines ‘not necessarily’ among major projects to prioritize

MONTREAL — Liberal leader Mark Carney says pipelines are “not necessarily” the large projects his government would prioritize to deal with the “crisis” of the trade war with the United States.

On Sunday, both Carney and Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre were interviewed on Tout le monde en parle, a very popular televised Quebec talk show on Radio-Canada.
