Why Progressives Increasingly Support Violence

A new survey finds more than half of left-wing respondents believe assassinating Donald Trump could be justified.

Political violence in America is not just a relic of the past. From the attempted assassinations of Donald Trump to the murder of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, to the burning of Teslas in protest of Elon Musk, political violence is a present-day reality. More than 9,000 threats have been made against members of Congress this year—a “huge increase,” according to officials.

Are these events aberrations or do they reflect a national problem? Are they connected? And does the public support them?

The Canadian government froze my bank account just in time for the election

As most of my followers know, I left Canada in January 2021 out of genuine concern that if I didn’t, I would never be able to leave. I predicted I would be targeted by the government on account of my political dissidence—specifically due to my criticisms of Covid mandates, increasing authoritarianism, and attacks on free speech by the government, as well as on account of the fact I have been the most prominent and vocal critic of gender identity ideology and legislation in Canada for over a decade now.

China’s Cybersecurity ‘Pearl Harbor’ Against America: ‘Everything, Everywhere, All at Once’

China’s multidimensional war against US interests is already underway and well-documented. One underappreciated dimension of its attack on American primacy, however, is the arena of cybersecurity.

For decades, Communist China’s spies, hackers and businessmen have feasted on the forced transfer of technology from vulnerable US corporate enterprises drawn to the vast Chinese market. Little has been accomplished to reduce this massive theft of intellectual property. US businesses seem to have resigned themselves to such unfair practices as the price of doing business in China.

CHARLEBOIS: Childhood obesity gets a prescription — and the food sector a warning

Canada has released its first major update to pediatric obesity guidelines in nearly two decades, and the recommendations represent a dramatic departure from past approaches.

In addition to emphasizing traditional strategies such as healthy eating, physical activity, and behavioural support, the new guidelines now encourage physicians to consider prescribing GLP-1 receptor agonists — such as Ozempic and Wegovy — to children as young as 12. They also support the option of bariatric surgery for teenagers starting at age 13, even before exhausting lifestyle-based interventions.

Pizza should be a Holy food group.

Live facial recognition would enhance UK justice, says Tony Blair

Innovations such as digital identities and live facial recognition should shape the future of the criminal justice system, Tony Blair has said.

Proposals for technological advancement such as the establishment of a unique digital identifier to connect a person’s data, such as health and tax records, have been included in The Times Crime and Justice Commission’s full report and recommendations, which were released on Monday.

Blair was always a creep.

Danielle Kubes: Government cannot spend its way out of the fertility crisis

Michelle Sabari always wanted to have six children. She started dating her husband in university and told him her plan — and he was game. By age 30, they were both finally done with school, had jobs and felt stable enough to start a family. Three kids came in four years, and they took a pause to regain their footing. But she didn’t feel “done” — not even close.

WTF?

The U.S. is declaring war on Canada’s very identity

This explains such a stupid column: Samira Mohyeddin is a Toronto-based journalist and the 2024-2025 inaugural journalism fellow at the University of Toronto’s Women and Gender Studies Institute.

Do You Know Why the Beatified MS-13 ‘Maryland Father’ Was ‘Mistakenly’ Deported?

MS 13 DACA Dreamer

It’s worth reminding readers of the reasons the man being described as the innocent “Maryland father” was “mistakenly” deported from Los Estados Unidos.

Kilmar Abrego Garcia is now cooling his heels in the most famous El Salvadoran prison in the world. He’s gotten more love from America’s left than, say, the 14-year-old girl MS-13 hacked up with machetes in 2019 in Maryland. It’s strange, isn’t it? Ariana Funes-Diaz was hacked with a machete and hit with a baseball bat, and her lifeless and bloodied body was left in a ditch, but nobody seems to remember or care.

Would a Mark Carney win push Western separatism into the mainstream?

Earlier this month, former Reform Party leader Preston Manning sparked controversy with a Globe and Mail op-ed warning that electing a Liberal government headed by Mark Carney would pose a serious threat to Canada’s national unity.

“Voters, particularly in central and Atlantic Canada, need to recognize that a vote for the Carney Liberals is a vote for Western secession—a vote for the breakup of Canada as we know it,” he wrote. “The next prime minister of Canada, if it remains Mark Carney, would then be identified in the history books, tragically and needlessly, as the last prime minister of a united Canada.”

Three ways this Canada-U.S. dispute will end

You’d have to squint till your eyeballs ache, but there is a foreseeable scenario where Canada and the U.S. build a closer relationship out of this ugly moment.

This outcome is far from certain — hence the squinting.

But one influential figure in Washington professes to see it. Donald Trump’s first-term trade czar predicted the optimistic scenario last week in Ottawa, speaking behind closed doors.

If black actors can play white people, why not the other way round?

Since the summer of Black Lives Matter, a peculiar double standard has emerged in casting

Congratulations to Ncuti Gatwa, the star of Doctor Who, on landing an exciting new role. He’s been cast in Born with Teeth, a Royal Shakespeare Company play about the relationship between the Bard and his fellow Elizabethan playwright Christopher Marlowe. Mr Gatwa says the play is “like no version of Shakespeare and Marlowe that I’ve ever seen before”.

I can well believe it. Not least because Mr Gatwa is to play Marlowe. Who, like most people in England in the early 1590s, was white.

Housing Crisis Will Persist: Canada Population Growth Likely to Be Higher Than Liberal Gov’t Forecast

Canada’s new immigration curbs have slowed increases in population, but government projections of near-zero growth over the next two years are likely “off the mark,” said an economist with Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce.

“The housing crisis of the last decade was in many ways a planning issue as under-counting of population growth has resulted in a suboptimal increase in housing supply,” he said in the report. “We fear that we are in a process of repeating past mistakes.”
