FIFA cancelling thousands of hotel bookings in host cities, including Vancouver and Toronto

Organizers of the coming FIFA World Cup have begun cancelling thousands of their hotel-room bookings in Toronto, Vancouver and other host cities across North America, a move industry observers say is not uncommon during large events.

The British Columbia Hotel Association said FIFA organizers have cancelled between 70 per cent and 80 per cent of their booked hotel rooms in Vancouver, accounting for roughly 15,000 hotel-room nights during the tournament period between June 11 and July 19. Those freed-up rooms can now be booked by regular travellers, the association said.

Men pretending to be women athletes banned from women’s Olympic events by new IOC policy

GENEVA (AP) — Transgender women athletes are now excluded from women’s events at the Olympics after the IOC agreed to a new eligibility policy on Thursday which aligns with U.S. President Donald Trump’s executive order on sports ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Games.

“Eligibility for any female category event at the Olympic Games or any other IOC event, including individual and team sports, is now limited to biological females,” the International Olympic Committee said, to be determined by a mandatory gene test once in an athlete’s career.

Almost half of former NDP voters don’t recognize names of leadership candidates: poll

OTTAWA – Nearly half of those who voted for the federal NDP at least once over the past four elections don’t recognize the names of the five current leadership candidates, a new poll suggests.

The Angus Reid Institute surveyed 1,100 Canadians who voted for the NDP at least once between 2015 and 2025. It was conducted online so can’t be given a margin of error.

Justice department and Trump ally Michael Flynn reach settlement over wrongful prosecution suit

A Department of Justice spokesperson said on Wednesday that the settlement had redressed a “historic injustice”.

“Those who instigated the Russia Collusion Hoax and Crossfire Hurricane abused their power to mislead the American people and tarnish the reputations of President Trump and his supporters,” the DOJ spokesperson said, referring to the FBI’s investigation inquiry into Russia’s attempts to meddle in the 2016 election.

With hindsight, incompetent former immigration minister says he would have capped international students sooner

Sean Fraser – almost certainly lying if his mouth is open.

Justice Minister Sean Fraser, who was in charge of immigration during some of the years Auditor General Karen Hogan found instances of fraud in Canada’s international student program, said with hindsight, he would have acted sooner to fundamentally change it.

The Opposition Conservatives have been calling for his resignation, along with that of current Immigration Minister Lena Diab and Fraser’s immediate successor Marc Miller, from Prime Minister Mark Carney’s cabinet.

British Army soldiers have been reprimanded for lampooning the low morale among troops amid warnings from the top brass that they would likely be wiped out if a major war broke out.

A British Army Major was “summoned for a telling off” after it was revealed that he created a satirical song reflecting on the official position of senior officers that, should a big war come, they in the “first echelon” would have to be quickly replaced with new recruits if the country had a hope of winning the conflict.

RCMP commissioner regrets Indigenous spying program that spanned over a decade

The RCMP’s commissioner says he expresses sincere regret for an extensive spying program that targeted hundreds of Indigenous people.

It’s the first time Mike Duheme acknowledged reporting by CBC Indigenous concerning RCMP surveillance activities dating back to the late 1960s against Indigenous leaders and organizations.

“We recognize the serious concerns that this history continues to raise for Indigenous Peoples, families and communities across Canada,” Duheme wrote in a statement published Wednesday.

France: Rapey Islamic scholar Tariq Ramadan gets 18 years for sexual assaults

A Paris court has sentenced in absentia Swiss Islamic scholar Tariq Ramadan to 18 years in prison for the rape of three women.

On Wednesday evening, the former Oxford University professor was found guilty of all three counts that took place between 2009 and 2016, marking his latest fall from grace.

Ramadan has continuously denied the allegations brought to the French court but later admitted to having had contact with the women.

… However, since Switzerland does not extradite its citizens to other countries, it is unclear how the well-known academic will be brought to justice.
