Housing affordability has been improving. It’s not enough and may not last much longer

Canada’s housing market is waking up for the spring selling season, but young prospective homebuyers would be justified to remain in a state of prolonged hibernation.

For over two years homes in much of the country have been getting more affordable, thanks to a mix of softer prices and, later, falling interest rates. The problem is that, for the most part, we are still nowhere close to pre-pandemic levels of affordability. With the exception of condos, owning a home remains far more expensive than it was before the last housing boom.

Pentagon tightens control of Stars and Stripes after blasting it as ‘woke’

The Defense Department outlined a sweeping “modernization” effort for Stars and Stripes, the independent military newspaper, according to an internal memo reviewed by The Washington Post, following up on a promise made in January to overhaul the publication and rid it of “woke distractions.”

The memo, sent by Deputy Defense Secretary Stephen A. Feinberg on March 9, says the newspaper “must modernize to remain relevant and viable” in the digital age. It also introduces an “interim policy” governing the newspaper effective immediately that Feinberg says replaces previous Pentagon instructions. That policy restricts the use of wire services and says that content in the paper, known as Stripes, must be consistent with “good order and discipline,” a phrase used in military justice.

Withdrawn charges in Stronach sex assault trial raise questions about prosecution

When his trial began in February, Frank Stronach faced 12 counts related to seven female complainants whose allegations included sexual assault and the historical charges of rape and attempted rape.

Now, with all the evidence heard and closing submissions set for the end of the month, those charges have been whittled down to seven — related to four of the initial seven complainants.

That the Crown has decided to drop five charges, and discard the testimony of three complainants, has raised some questions about the initial strength of some of their cases and whether enough was done beforehand to anticipate potential problems.

Top US allies are turning toward China instead. Blame Trump.

The 21st century is more likely to belong to Beijing than to Washington — at least that’s the view from four key U.S. allies.

Swaths of the public in Canada, Germany, France and the U.K. have soured on the U.S., driven by President Donald Trump’s foreign policy decisions, according to recent results from The POLITICO Poll.

End of Alberta independence petition drive draws near, as experts weigh in on outcome of voters backing separation

CALGARY – With about six weeks left to collect signatures, supporters of Alberta independence are working to gather enough names on a citizen-led petition that could trigger a province-wide referendum on whether Alberta should separate from Canada.

But even if the campaign succeeds and a majority of voters backed separation in a referendum, constitutional experts say the vote would only begin what could be a long and complicated process of negotiations with Ottawa, the provinces, and Indigenous nations.

I spoke to over 30 sources about Mark Carney’s first year as prime minister. This is the picture that emerged

“Let the party begin.”

That’s how Mark Carney started his first press conference after being sworn in as Canada’s 24th prime minister, on March 14, 2025, after a whirlwind leadership contest.
Weeks earlier, he’d jettisoned an emblem of the Liberals’ brand by promising to scrap the consumer carbon price, describing himself — as he does now — as a “pragmatist” tied to results, not dogma.

American Socialists To Join New Cuba Aid Flotilla Despite Hints of Negotiations Aimed at Ousting Communist Leadership

As President Trump tightens the screws on Cuba’s Communist government, its leadership is winning support from Democratic Socialists in America, who are sending an entourage down to the island nation next week to show solidarity with Cuba’s dictatorial regime. The Democratic Socialists of America announced that 20 DSA members will join an international group of humanitarians, the so-called Nuestra América Convoy, which says it is delivering critical aid to Cuba amid an economic and energy crisis caused by America’s blockade of fuel, flights, and other essential supplies.

Trump said the strikes “totally obliterated” Iran’s military on the island, calling the operation “one of the most powerful bombing raids in the History of the Middle East.”

Poilievre announces auto plan aiming for tariff-free access to U.S. market

WINDSOR – Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has unveiled a new auto plan aiming to secure tariff-free access to the U.S. market.

The plan would harmonize tailpipe emissions reductions with the U.S., and align Canada with the United States on Chinese tariffs in a move meant to give Canada leverage in trade talks.

Poilievre would also implement a rule where for each car produced in Canada, the same manufacturer would be able to sell a U.S. or Mexico-made car in Canada duty-free.

To criticize an American-led war, an American pope turns to allies

VATICAN CITY — In the days after President Donald Trump unleashed a military attack on Iran, the Catholic Church was quickly on a war-footing — against the war.

America’s rational for preemptive strikes, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s secretary of state warned, risked setting “the whole world … ablaze.”

Cardinal Robert McElroy, the church’s top authority in Washington, called the war neither “morally legitimate” nor “just.”

Zelensky accuses EU allies of ‘blackmail’ in oil pipeline row

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused European allies of seeking to “blackmail” Kyiv into reopening a pipeline transporting Russian oil to Hungary and Slovakia.

He said restoring the flow of Russian crude oil through Ukraine into the European Union (EU) would be like lifting economic sanctions on Moscow.

Ukraine says the Soviet-era Druzhba oil pipeline was damaged by Russian air strikes in January and has yet to be repaired.
