Journalism schools are failing a generation of students

The other day I was rummaging around in my basement and stumbled across a tattered binder from my 2010 Carleton University journalism school days. As I brushed away the dust from my 14-year-old handwritten notes, my eyes were drawn to my very first reporting class lesson. My professor, Norma Greenaway, a Postmedia journalist of 40 years, set out what we journalist hatchlings had to keep top of mind as we put pen to paper for the very first time. We had responsibilities to the reader that we had to remember. I had scribbled down some words in my notepad and underlined them twice: “Be balanced and fair.”

No Canadian Is Free. Justin Trudeau’s Political Prisoners Are the Proof

Two of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau‘s political prisoners were released yesterday after two years in custody. In what is the biggest judicial scandal in recent Canadian history, the Trudeau government arrested four men from Coutts, Alberta, known as the Coutts Four, for participating in the Truckers Freedom Convoy. The men were held without bail on trumped up charges of “conspiracy to murder police officers.” Two of those men, Jerry Morin and Chris Lysak, now walk free, having plead guilty to lesser gun charges. The other two, Chris Carbert, Anthony Olienick, will resume pre-trial hearings on Feb. 20.

Nolte: Another Year of Anemic Grammy Ratings

The sixty-sixth annual Grammy Awards drew only 16.9 million viewers “across CBS, Paramount+ and other digital platforms, according to early data from Nielsen,” reports the far-left Deadline.

While this is a 34 percent improvement from 2023, until the arrogant, smug, preachy Woke Gestapo era began in 2017 with the election of President Donald Trump, the Grammy Awards averaged around 25 million viewers for nearly a decade without breaking a sweat.

Social media has exposed and over exposed the “Stars” of our era as weak tea.

Allan Stratton: Next to the left, Danielle Smith is a voice of sanity on gender

I’m a gay man on the liberal left who was raised in the 1960s. I am fully aware of the fear and dangers of outing, the mental health issues faced by LGB and T communities around stigma and demonization and the hard-won battles we fought for our civil rights and social acceptance. Yet I’m baffled by the hysterical reaction to Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s quite reasonable policies for minors who announce as trans.

Sweden drops Nord Stream explosions investigation

Swedish prosecutors said Wednesday they would drop their investigation into the September 2022 explosions on the underwater Nord Stream pipelines.

The cause of the blasts in the pipelines built to carry Russian natural gas to Germany is unknown, but it is widely believed that they were the result of an attack.

Public prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist said there was no Swedish jurisdiction in the case.

Isn’t that convenient!

MPs want to know how Canadian universities are protecting Palestinian supporters against attacks

OTTAWA—A group of Liberal and Green MPs are asking Canadian universities how they’re protecting pro-Palestinian voices while promoting dialogue on campuses amid tensions over the Israel-Hamas war.

In a letter to 27 university presidents obtained by the Star, 11 Liberals and the two Green MPs outline concerns about reports of backlash and profiling faced by students expressing their views on the Mideast conflict.

“Dehumanization and vilification of the Palestinian people, and stigmatization of those advocating for their legitimate aspirations, are commonplace,” the letter states. “While not occurring within the university setting alone, students, faculty and staff are being directly impacted in significant ways.”

Israel mulls response to ‘non-starter’ Hamas truce proposal

The Israeli government will discuss on Wednesday the country’s official response to a draft ceasefire proposal from Hamas that Israeli officials have called a “non-starter.”

The Hamas draft document, submitted on Tuesday in response to a proposal negotiated last month in Paris, would see the phased release of the remaining 136 captives being held by the terror group, 31 of whom are dead, according to Israel. Another 20 hostages may also be deceased, according to an internal Israeli report seen by The New York Times.

Why an Ontario town with fewer than 6,000 people has OPP’s largest jail

Nestled between Winnipeg and Thunder Bay, Sioux Lookout appears to be a typical northern Ontario town.

It’s made up of a few roads and a newly minted roundabout. A hunting shop, a coffee spot and an LCBO fill out its downtown core.

The quiet municipality is home to just under 6,000 people and a railway stop served by the VIA Rail train between Toronto and Vancouver.

Toyota Refused To Hop On The Electric Vehicle Bandwagon, And It Paid Off Big Time

Toyota said Tuesday the company will see an annual profit of $30 billion at the end of the fiscal year in March, and it’s probably down to one big decision.

The Japanese car giant suggested that its decision to avoid going fully electric within its fleet of vehicles, and instead emphasize hybrid machines, is likely why it’ll end the fiscal year on such a high, according to Axios. Shares in Toyota rose nearly 50% in the last 12 months, while electric vehicle manufacturers struggle to deal with the fact that no one wants their stupid cars.

… Ford was forced to cut the price of the electric version of its iconic F-150 pickup truck by around $10,000 because no one wanted to buy them. Models were piling up at dealerships, despite the lower-cost, because common sense consumers know that electric vehicles (a) don’t really help the planet as they are still fueled by electricity from traditional power plants, and (b) are often junked over the most minor of damages.

Former RCMP Intelligence official Cameron Ortis sentenced to 14 years after leaking national secrets

A Ontario Superior Court judge has sentenced former RCMP intelligence officer Cameron Ortis to 14 years in jail.

Assistant crown attorney Judy Kleiwer said Ortis’s conduct was a “betrayal” of the RCMP and Canada’s Five Eyes partners that “jeopardized the safety of Canadians.”

He’s only going to serve 7, what a surprise.
