The United States Has Been a Bulwark for Ukraine. What Happens if Support Collapses?

A year ago, when Washington and much of Europe were still awash in optimism that Ukraine was on the verge of repelling Russia from its territory, it seemed inconceivable that the United States would turn its back on the victim of Vladimir V. Putin’s aggression.

Now, even as Senate Democrats try to salvage an aid package for Ukraine, that possibility remains real. And the political moment feels a long way from 14 months ago when President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine stood before a joint session of Congress, wearing his signature drab green sweater, and basked in a minute-long standing ovation.

Electric cars are not ‘zero emission’, says advertising watchdog

Electric cars cannot be advertised as completely “zero emission” because of the carbon dioxide that is generated when they are made and charged, the advertising watchdog has declared.

In a ruling that will change how electric vehicles (EVs) are promoted, the Advertising Standards Authority has banned carmakers from referring to them as zero emission unless they make clear this is only while driving.

The decision emerged as the regulator criticised BMW for describing its range of EVs as “zero emission cars” in Google searches.

Canadian officials still haven’t seen intelligence linking UN’s Gaza aid agency with Hamas: sources

UNRWA School

The government of Canada did not see any evidence backing up Israel’s claim that staff employed by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) colluded with Hamas before suspending funding to the agency, CBC News has learned.

Government sources tell CBC that Israel still has not shared evidence with Canada to substantiate its claim that 12 employees of UNRWA were involved in some capacity in the October 7 attack on Israel by Hamas and the affiliated group Islamic Jihad.

Terry Glavin: The Palestinians’ western ‘friends’ are the Palestinians’ worst enemies

“The loss of any innocent life is a tragedy — Israeli or Palestinian. Hamas not only takes Israelis hostage, but also holds Palestinians hostage. Hamas is not only the enemy of Jews, but the enemy of Palestinians, of peace, of human rights, and an enemy of our common humanity.”

There is no convincing case that can be made against the objective and moral truth of those words. They were spoken this week by Irwin Cotler, Canada’s former justice minister and the founder of the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights, in support of Ottawa’s just-announced sanctions on the 11 Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad warlords who directed the Oct. 7 atrocities in Israel.

Trudeau Foundation probe can’t rule out possibility Chinese donations part of ‘influence scheme’ targeting Ottawa

A law firm hired by the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation to investigate donations tied to two wealthy Chinese businessmen said it couldn’t rule out the possibility cash sent to the Montreal charity may have been part of a “influence scheme” targeting the Trudeau government.

The probe concluded the foundation’s handling of tax receipts related to the Chinese donations violated the Income Tax Act, and that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s brother, Alexandre, broke internal rules and policies by the accepting the $200,000 donation pledge, which he was not authorized to do.

Blazing Saddles at 50: the button-pushing spoof that could never get made today

Though it rarely gets mentioned in the same breath as The Wild Bunch, McCabe and Mrs Miller and the wave of revisionist westerns that came out of Hollywood in the late 60s and early 70s, Mel Brooks’s Blazing Saddles doesn’t need any artfully hazy Vilmos Zsigmond cinematography to upend Old West mythology. True, it is a comedy where a horse gets cold-cocked, a Native American chief (one of three characters played by Brooks) speaks Yiddish and Count Basie’s orchestra makes an appearance on the plains. Yet from the opening sequence, where Chinese immigrants and recently freed Black slaves work under the white man’s whip to build a railroad, this irreverent Looney Tunes spoof of the genre takes a dimmer view of frontier life than the classics it parodies.

The Decadence of Identity Politics

Gender studies comes to policing.

Among anti-cop legislators, “defund the police” may have lost some currency, but “demoralize the police” is doing just fine.

On January 30, the New York City Council passed the How Many Stops Act, over the veto of Mayor Eric Adams. The law requires New York police officers to fill out a form nearly every time they interact with a civilian. If, for example, an officer asks a potential bystander to a shooting if he had witnessed that shooting, the officer will have to complete a form listing the bystander’s race, sex, and age. Are there other potential witnesses in the area who urgently need to be contacted before they disperse? Too bad. Identity-based paperwork comes first. (If an officer waits to the end of his shift to finish filling out the forms, he will still likely need to have made some contemporaneous record of his encounters.)

The department’s personnel will spend hundreds of hours a day cumulatively on this bureaucratic task—time diverted from bringing criminals to justice.

NDP calls for ban on ‘misleading, deceptive’ fossil fuel ads

The NDP lives in a very different reality than you and me.

Federal New Democrats say it’s time for Canada to do to the fossil fuel industry what it did to tobacco companies by banning misleading ads that market the industry as offering a solution to climate change.

The NDP’s natural resources critic Charlie Angus tabled a private members bill (C-372) in the House of Commons this week. The bill would ban what the party describes as misleading fossil fuel advertising, similar to the way cigarette ads were restricted in the 1990s.

Poilievre says he’s against the use of puberty blockers for transgender children

OTTAWA — Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre confirmed this morning that he’s against the use of puberty blockers for children.

Poilievre gave that position on Parliament Hill after facing a barrage of questions about his views on gender-affirming medical treatments for transgender children.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith announced plans last week to ban puberty blockers and hormone therapy for children 15 and younger who have not already begun such treatments.

Cripes, the way the media is reacting you’d think Poilievre wants to sexually mutilate their children.
