New year’s predictions for electric vehicles

China crappy electric cars, EV

… If Justin Trudeau and his Liberals somehow, God forbid, manage to get themselves re-elected in the next federal election, a number of Chinese brands — BYD and Nio almost assuredly, but also others are surely girding up for the fight — will announce plans to start building a dealer network here in Canada, in advance of a full-scale invasion in 2026. As I stated in “The consequences of Canada’s EV mandate,” the main reason we haven’t yet been flooded with cheap Chinese electrics is because the United States has a 25-per-cent tariff on Chinese cars.

Japan issues tsunami warnings for west coast after 7.6-magnitude earthquake

A powerful earthquake has struck central Japan’s western coastline, prompting tsunami alerts and warnings for people to evacuate.

The quake, which hit at 4.10pm local time (0710 GMT) and is estimated to have been magnitude 7.6, knocked out power to tens of thousands of homes and disrupted flights and rail services. In Wajima city on the Noto peninsula, close to the epicentre, at least six people are reported to have been inside houses that collapsed.

Waves of up to 3 metres (10ft) were reported along stretches of the Sea of Japan coast. The Japanese public broadcaster NHK said waves could reach as high as 5 metres.

Senior military leader says Canadians are ‘overly comfortable’ as global security shifts

It’s Bob Auchterlonie’s job to be ready for the next crisis, whether that’s a wildfire, a flood, a hurricane or war on another continent.

As the commander of the Canadian Joint Operations Command, the vice admiral has had an extraordinary year that included co-ordinating airlifts of Canadians from Sudan and Israel, planning possible evacuations from Lebanon and Haiti, and managing the growing demands for help at home.

Looking ahead to 2024, Auchterlonie said he thinks the pressure will continue to mount, and Canadians are “overly comfortable” about their safety as the world changes.

Europe aims to ramp up weapons to help Ukraine defeat Russia

Britain and other European countries are “cranking through the gears” trying to ensure they can help Ukraine win its war against Russia without the US should Donald Trump get into power, according to a senior Whitehall source.

Ministers are desperately trying to ramp up manufacturing capabilities across the continent so they can send weapons and ammunition to the front line and keep Vladimir Putin at bay for at least another year, irrespective of US support.

New study shows few low-income families benefiting from $10 daycare in B.C.

Lengthy waitlists and high costs make daycare unattainable for many British Columbian families.

The province’s 13,000 $10-per-day child-care spaces have changed that for many—but a new study from University of British Columbia researchers suggests very few low-income families have been able to access the program.

“Our initial study intended to only interview low-income women who were single moms accessing those $10-per-day spots,” said Dr. Lea Caragata, director of the school of social work at UBC and co-author of the study. “After six months of intensive recruitment, we could only find 13 across the province.”

13? That’s pathetic but oh so ‘Liberal”.

Change State Constitution To Stop AfD, Says German Minister

The interior minister of the eastern German state of Thuringia, social democrat (SPD) Georg Maier, is calling for an amendment to the state’s constitution to hinder—or prevent—right-wing anti-globalist party AfD from obtaining a high-ranking position in the state parliament.

Elections are to be held in three eastern states, Brandenburg, Saxony, and Thuringia next year, and AfD (Alternative für Deutschland) is on course to win in all three, possibly garnering a third of all votes, according to opinion polls.

Netanyahu vows to retake control of Egypt-Gaza border in ‘many more months’ of war

Israeli prime minister said the 8.7-mile stretch of land “must be in our hands” to meet the goal of eradicating military threat from Hamas

Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to take control of the Egypt-Gaza border as he said the war against Hamas would continue for “many more months”.

The Israeli prime minister said the 8.7-mile stretch of land “must be in our hands” to meet the goal of eradicating the military threat from Hamas.

“It must be shut,” Mr Netanyahu said in a press conference late on Saturday. “It is clear that any other arrangement would not ensure the demilitarisation that we seek.”

2024: Where Does the Pendulum Swing?

If there is a pendulum that regulates world affairs, it is important to know which way it may be swinging in the year that is about to start.

Seen from one angle, the pendulum looks like swinging towards uncertainty. In 2024, many countries with major roles in international affairs are facing dicey elections.

The United States looks set for what could be the most difficult election season in its history. Will President Joe Biden, with his physical and mental fitness questioned by some, be able to run the final mile to his party’s nomination? Or will his Democrat Party be forced to rally around Kamala Harris at the last moment and out of desperation?

Oct. 7: Intelligence Failure or Something Else?

Ric Grenell, former acting director of national intelligence under President Donald Trump, said on a Nov. 10 podcast with Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) that he estimates that the hands-on intelligence gathering people probably did know and had raised red flags, but that higher-ups may have played down the warnings because of political or conceptual biases or considerations. He said he had encountered this phenomenon all the time in the U.S. Intelligence Community.

On Nov. 27, it was reported by Israeli Channel 12 News that it had obtained internal emails from Unit 8200 (the Israeli military signals intelligence unit, similar to the National Security Agency) where allegedly already on July 6, an experienced non-commissioned officer (NCO) specializing in Hamas had exposed Hamas’s operational plan, in chilling details, and its intensive training for implementing it.
