Conrad Black: Lessons from Australia’s the ‘voice’ referendum

Canadians should perhaps pay more attention than we have to the referendum in Australia on Oct. 14 on the subject of the Aboriginal peoples. There are just under one million designated Aboriginals in Australia, slightly below four per cent of Australia’s 25 million people. The roughly corresponding figures in Canada are that Indigenous Canadians, including in both countries a good number of mixed ancestry, are slightly under five per cent-just, at under two million in a population of 40 million. The issue in the referendum was a proposed amendment to the Australian Constitution by which a federal advisory body comprised of native people would be set up which would have only a consultative role. How this body would be selected and its recommendations presented would be dealt with later. The idea was just to give Aboriginal people, in the wording of the referendum, a “voice” in the politics of the country.

They Ran Into a Bomb Shelter for Safety. Instead, They Were Slaughtered.

Hamas’s assault on southern Israel began with a barrage of rockets, sending scores of people into roadside refuges. Then gunmen came to hunt them.

Nearly 30 young people took refuge inside a grimy bunker on the morning of Oct. 7, hoping the reinforced-concrete shelter near the border with Gaza would fulfill its promise of protection.

But just after 7:40 a.m., when a group of Hamas assailants, armed with assault rifles and grenades, attacked the shelter near Kibbutz Re’im in southern Israel, the very characteristics that made the tiny fortress a refuge from incoming rockets turned it into a deathtrap for those inside.

In less than an hour, after a desperate defense that included throwing live grenades back at their attackers, more than a dozen of the shelter’s occupants had been killed, their bodies blown apart and riddled with bullets. Others, dazed and injured, were taken to Gaza as hostages.

Who will control Gaza after Hamas?

The most popular candidate among Palestinians is in jail

Who will rule Gaza once the war is over? Israel, so far, hasn’t provided an answer. The country’s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been clear that his aim is to wipe out Hamas. He said this week that Israel will claim responsibility for security in Gaza for an “indefinite period,” in order to stop Hamas from rearming and establish long-term security. But Israel is unlikely to have the stomach to stay in Gaza as casualties mount. So who will step into this vacuum?

Ukrainian military officer coordinated Nord Stream pipeline attack

Roman Chervinsky, a colonel in Ukraine’s special operations forces, was integral to the brazen sabotage operation, say people familiar with planning

A senior Ukrainian military officer with deep ties to the country’s intelligence services played a central role in the bombing of the Nord Stream natural gas pipelines last year, according to officials in Ukraine and elsewhere in Europe, as well as other people knowledgeable about the details of the covert operation.

The officer’s role provides the most direct evidence to date tying Ukraine’s military and security leadership to a controversial act of sabotage that has spawned multiple criminal investigations and that U.S. and Western officials have called a dangerous attack on Europe’s energy infrastructure.

Bankman-Fried’s Parents Stand By Their Sam—And Face Their Own Legal Perils

Barbara Fried wanted to get close to her son.

During breaks in the monthlong criminal fraud trial of her firstborn child, Sam Bankman-Fried, she would sometimes leave her seat and walk up to the railing that separated him from the gallery. Watching him and his lawyers, often in silence, she was just inches away yet no more able to intervene on his behalf or prevent the conviction that many saw coming.

Joseph Bankman and Barbara Fried had hovered nearby when their son soared to prominence as the crypto industry’s biggest star, and advised him as his company collapsed and the government made its case against him. And after a federal jury delivered a guilty verdict that could send him to prison for decades, his parents are trying to prepare him for what comes next.

Israel, Iran and the Biden Administration: If America Does Not Win, Its Enemies Do

In January 2021, Iran was on the verge of economic asphyxiation, barely able to continue financing Hezbollah, Palestinian Islamic Jihad and Hamas. The Abraham Accords outlined the prospect of regional peace, and Saudi Arabia was considering joining the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kosovo, Morocco and Sudan. Israel was a respected regional power.

Russia had not yet invaded Ukraine. Chinese President Xi Jinping was not threatening Taiwan.

Reporters Demand Use of Terms Like ‘Genocide,’ ‘Ethnic Cleansing’ to Describe (Defame) Israel

On Friday, The Washington Post reported that journalists by the hundreds are signing a petition demanding that all media outlets should describe Israel in hateful terms, including “apartheid,” “ethnic cleansing,” and “genocide.” In other words, they want all news accounts to sound like an “eradicate Israel” rally.

But the Post used the most anodyne words for this radical petition. On the front page of the Style section, it said “Journalists sign letter protesting war coverage.” On an inside page, it was “Letter calls for precise terminology.” Are they too afraid to put “apartheid” and “genocide” in the headline?

Premiers of five provinces ask for meeting with Trudeau over carbon tax

The premiers of five provinces are calling for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to meet with them to discuss their request for carbon price exemptions on not just home heating oil, but all forms of home heating.

The open letter shared Saturday was signed by the premiers of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario, Alberta and Saskatchewan.

In the open letter, the premiers wrote that while they are pleased that Atlantic Canada has received a carbon price exemption on home heating oil, which around 30 per cent of residents use, they believe that similar exemptions need to follow.

Oregon Decriminalized Hard Drugs. It Isn’t Working.

Majority of voters now want to undo a pioneering change as public drug use has become rampant

EUGENE, Ore.—Soon after Oregon became the first state to decriminalize all drugs in 2020, Officer Jose Alvarez stopped arresting people for possession and began giving out tickets with the number for a rehab helpline.

Most of the people smoking fentanyl or meth on this city’s streets balled them up and tossed them onto the ground.

“Those tickets frankly seemed like a waste of time,” said Alvarez, who stopped issuing them a few months after the law went into effect.

Hamas Death Worship Is a Plague

We are responsible for cleansing the world of this abomination.

Last week, Ben Shapiro engaged an audience at Cambridge University. In his short presentation that opened into an extended question and answer session, he defined and argued against the moral code which Hamas and its enablers use to justify its orgiastic spree of murder, rape, torture, and kidnapping in all of its sadistic horror.

‘I will not be silenced’: Rashida Tlaib won’t stop fighting for Palestinian rights

As Israeli ground troops battled in Gaza City amid a spiralling civilian death toll on Tuesday, the congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, the sole Palestinian American member of the US Congress, rose to answer a censure motion rebuking her for comments she made about the war.

Gripping a photograph of her sity, her grandmother who lives in the occupied West Bank, she defended her stance and declared that she “will not be silenced” and “will not let you distort my words”.
