Survived the Holocaust, killed by Hamas

HOLIT, Israel—The wall was blackened where a rocket-propelled grenade punched a hole into Moshe Ridler’s bungalow.

“Then they threw a hand grenade into the room, to make sure he was dead,” said Eli Hazen, a volunteer collecting bodies in Holit, a kibbutz two kilometres from Gaza.

Ridler was 91, he said, and a survivor of the Holocaust.

“That Holocaust,” Hazen clarified. “He did not survive this Holocaust.”

Trudeau’s antisemitism envoy faces criticism for silence on rising attacks on Jews since start of Israel-Hamas war

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s newly appointed envoy on combating antisemitism is facing criticism for failing to speak out publicly about rising attacks and intimidation of Jews in Canada since the Hamas attacks on Israel.

Many Canadians, concerned about the upsurge in antisemitism, say they are baffled about why Deborah Lyons has so far not taken to social media to offer the Jewish community public support.

Hamas video: Israeli hostages accuse Netanyahu of war crimes

A wee bit “Stockholmish”

Hamas released a video on Monday in which three kidnapped Israeli women angrily appeal to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to release them “right now.”

In the video, which was released on Hamas’s social networks and described as “a number of Zionist prisoners held by Al-Qassam send a message to Netanyahu and the Zionist government,” the women accuse the prime minister of failing to act on October 7 to stop the Hamas massacre and now failing to rescue the hostages by enacting a ceasefire.

Joel Kotkin: Jews are being abandoned by the left

For much of the past century, Jews across Britain, North America and Europe tilted decisively to the left. The recent atrocities committed by Hamas against Israel have challenged that trend, with Jewish sensitivities inflamed in light of the growing celebration of terrorism among progressive leftists in the West.

Historically, Jews have been wary of the right — and for good reason. Not only did they fear the fascists, but also the old-school conservative establishment, which generally disdained Jews. The British Home Office used to limit Jewish immigration to the United Kingdom, and the U.S. State Department tried to block reports of the Nazis’ mass murder of Jews from reaching the United States. In most countries, Jews consistently supported mainstream left-wing parties — namely, Labour in Britain, the Socialists in France, the Democrats in America and the Liberals in Canada. Jews even played critical roles in more radical movements on the left, including the communists.

They’ll still be voting Liberal/NDP or Democrat as the case may be.

Judge reinstates Trump gag order in election subversion case

A federal judge has reinstated a limited gag order on former President Donald Trump in his 2020 presidential election subversion case.

It prevents him from criticising court staff, prosecutors and possible witnesses between now and his trial.

Judge Tanya Chutkan had temporarily lifted the order earlier this month so his lawyers could appeal but reinstated it on Sunday.

An hour after the news emerged, Mr Trump called the judge “Trump hating”.

Joly urges Israel to ease Gaza bombing campaign, citing ‘human tragedy of poor shopping’

Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly will call on Israel in a speech on Monday to temper its heavy bombardment of Gaza and allow for pauses in the war to permit sustained humanitarian aid to reach beleaguered Palestinian civilians.

In a wide-ranging foreign-policy address to the Economic Club in Toronto, Ms. Joly will lament that the world is engulfed in a “major international security crisis” that stretches from China and the Indo-Pacific to the war in Ukraine and the violent conflict in the Middle East. A copy of the speech was provided in advance to The Globe and Mail.

Prairies should elect more Liberals if they want voices heard on carbon pricing: rural economic development minister

Rural Economic Development Minister Gudie Hutchings says if Western and Prairie provinces want to secure carve-outs in the federal government’s carbon pricing policy, they should elect more Liberal ministers who can share their concerns with the government.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced major changes to the Liberals’ marquee climate policy this week, namely that the Canadian government is doubling the carbon rebate for rural households — from 10 per cent to 20 per cent — and implementing a three-year pause to the federal carbon price on heating oil.

British society will pay a terrible price for indulging extremism

We have imported hatreds and lost our common identity. Policy will have to be more muscular as a result

The most despicable thing about the rolling anti-Israel protests in London is that they first began not in response to Israeli military action, but to the atrocities committed by Hamas on October 7.

For three consecutive weekends now, around 100,000 people have lined the streets of London to show their opposition to Israel. In the words of Lord Austin, who witnessed Saturday’s march, there were “lots of signs calling for Israel to be eradicated. [But I] didn’t see any calling for peace, a two-state solution, Gaza to be freed from Hamas or hostages to be released.”

Sikh independence vote takes place in B.C. amid Canada-India tensions

SURREY, B.C. – Thousands of Sikh voters are expected to turn out today in the Metro Vancouver municipality of Surrey, to vote in an unofficial referendum at the centre of Canada’s ongoing tensions with India.

Organizers say the referendum on Khalistan — an independent state in India proposed by some Sikhs — is taking place at the same Surrey gurdwara where activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar was shot dead in June.

Today’s vote is the second round of the referendum in British Columbia, after organizers said the first ballot on Sept. 10 was so popular that voting couldn’t be completed in one day.

Prominent US figures face backlash and firings for pro-Palestinian statements

If you support this you deserve to be fired from the human race.

A rising number of prominent US figures have faced discipline over controversial public comments they have made about the Palestinian cause, as attacks by Israel on Gaza after the 7 October massacre of Israelis by Hamas fighters intensified.

David Velasco, the editor in chief of Artforum magazine, was reportedly fired after the magazine published an open letter in response to the war.

Celebrated US photographer Nan Goldin and other artists have said they will no longer work with Artforum after the magazine’s termination of Velasco, the New York Times reported.

“I have never lived through a more chilling period,” Goldin, who is Jewish and had signed the open letter, said to the Times. “People are being blacklisted. People are losing their jobs.”

A university in Tunisia, regarded as one of the historic centres of Islamic thought, has called on its students to support the jihad or holy war perpetrated by the terrorist group Hamas against the state of Israel.

The Ez-Zitouna University, which was founded sometime between the end of the 7th century and the beginning of the 8th century, released a statement on Facebook on October 12th regarding “Operation: Al-Aqsa Flood,” the massacre of over a thousand civilians by Hamas fighters on October 7th.
