The shoplifters Co-op

Petty crime is now being run by organised gangs

The Co-op is one of the UK’s oldest convenience stores and one of the largest, with around 70,000 employees. Since opening its first store in the working-class town of Rochdale, Lancashire, in 1884, it has operated democratically as a consumer-owned co-operative, aiming to meet the needs of its members and the wider community.

But now, when you walk into any of its 3,000 outlets, you’ll quickly find that all signs of trust and solidarity with members are gone.

US approves Dutch, Danish F-16 deliveries

Denmark and the Netherlands have said the US has cleared the way to allow F-16 fighters to be re-exported to Ukraine after some of its pilots are trained to fly them, helping restore momentum to a process that appeared to be stalling.

Ministers from both countries, the leaders of an international coalition to help Ukraine obtain the jets, thanked Washington for the green light, although it remains unclear when any F-16 transfers could take place.

Kajsa Ollongren, the Dutch defence minister, said she welcomed the US decision “to clear the way for delivery of F-16 jets to Ukraine”, which would allow the coalition “to follow through on the training of Ukrainian pilots”.

Will China, Russia, and North Korea Launch Their Nukes?

This week, the U.S. Navy’s Carrier Strike Group 5, centered around the USS Ronald Reagan, has been steaming off the east coast of Taiwan.

Be glad it is there. China has been throwing a diplomatic tantrum — fiercer than usual — because the Biden administration allowed William Lai Ching-te, Taiwan’s vice president, to make “transit” stops in New York and San Francisco on his way to and from Paraguay.

CIA SUED for working with the Biden campaign to produce ‘Dirty 51’ intel letter calling Hunter’s laptop disinformation

The CIA has been sued for its role in helping to craft a letter from 51 intelligence officials discrediting Hunter Biden’s laptop as Russian disinformation.

The letter that was signed by 51 intel officials in 2020 immediately before the presidential election falsely claimed that Hunter Biden’s laptop had all the ‘classic earmarks of a Russian information operation.’

A Republican report released in May showed that the CIA was actively involved in getting signatures for the letter which ‘was a political operation to help elect’ Joe Biden in November 2020.

Jack Mintz: Carbon taxes make the Bank of Canada’s job harder

With July inflation ramping up again on Tuesday, it’s obvious the battle ain’t over yet. The headline inflation rate jumped to 3.3 per cent from last month’s 2.8 per cent. While mortgage costs and food are major contributors to our stubborn inflation, energy prices have risen 5.8 per cent in the past four months, thanks in part to the carbon tax hike last April 1.

As the world continues its march to net-zero emissions by 2050, an interesting debate is rearing its head as to whether the energy price inflation will affect monetary policy. That point was made last year by Isabel Schnabel, a member of the European Central Bank’s Executive Board: “As we build a more sustainable economy, we face a new age of energy inflation … that can be expected to lead to a prolonged period of upside pressure on inflation,” she warned

Want to ease Canada’s housing crisis? Let’s start by being responsible about international student visas

Desperate calls by schools to urge local homeowners to rent out their rooms; students paying $650 a month to live three-to-a room in college towns boasting monthly rents upward of $2,000; a viral TikTok video purports to show an international student living under a bridge in Scarborough, Ont.

Housing is a complicated issue. It will take co-ordination, cash, and time to fix. But in the short term, there is at least one glaringly obvious – if surely controversial – way to help ease the challenge of finding affordable rental accommodation: We need to stop issuing so many international student visas.

‘My father and Walt would be turning in their graves’: Son of original Snow White director blasts ‘pathetic’ new version starring Rachel Zegler

The son of the original Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs director has blasted Disney’s ‘pathetic’ live-action ‘radical’ remake of the movie, accusing the company of having no respect for classics.

David Hand, 91, whose father of the same name directed the original 1937 animation, rebuked Walt Disney Studios for pursuing an ‘insulting’ and ‘woke’ remake of the movie that sought to ‘destroy’ its predecessor.

He said the new adaptation would have both his father and Walt Disney himself ‘turning in their graves’ as he slammed the upcoming movie starring Rachel Zegler as the titular character.
