Immigration Backlashes Spread Around the World

Record immigration to affluent countries is sparking bigger backlashes across the world, boosting populist parties and putting pressure on governments to tighten policies to stem the migration wave.

Many places, including Canada and parts of Europe and Asia, have been encouraging more migrants to come to help alleviate labor shortages and offset demographic declines.

But the jump in arrivals, along with increases in illegal immigration to the U.S. and Europe, is making more voters uneasy. The influx since the end of the pandemic is altering societies, with many people blaming immigrants for increases in crime and higher housing costs.

And this from a NYTimes newsletter I get …

… In earlier eras, the political left in the U.S. included many figures who worried about the effects of large-scale immigration. Both labor leaders and civil-rights leaders, for example, argued for moderate levels of immigration to protect the interests of vulnerable workers.

“There is a reason why Wall Street and all of corporate America likes immigration reform, and it is not, in my view, that they’re staying up nights worrying about undocumented workers in this country,” Bernie Sanders said in 2015. “What I think they are interested in is seeing a process by which we can bring low-wage labor of all levels into this country to depress wages for Americans, and I strongly disagree with that.”

… Democrats frequently like to point out the many ways in which Republicans are out of step with public opinion, including on abortion bans, the minimum wage, taxes on the wealthy and background checks for gun owners. Immigration cuts the other way, polls show. It is a subject on which much of the Democratic Party, like the political left in Europe, is in a different place than many voters.

I remember how shocked Progressives were when Bernie’s views on immigration became widely known during his run for the Democrat nomination. I give him credit for being an Old School  Lefty on immigration.

Barbara Kay: When They Say ‘We’re Coming for Your Children,’ Believe Them

Wall of Transgender Heroines

For years, Canadians have proved amenable to demands for basic rights, but also to entitlements, for those who identify, variously, as “trans,” “non-binary” or “queer.” These entitlements, even those encroaching on women’s rights, are supported by government and most media. They extend into all our cultural, therapeutic, and social institutions.

The only domain in which we are witnessing a groundswell of citizen resistance is K–12 pedagogy, where Queer Theory—a gendered form of Marxism that rejects the “normal” in sexuality, including  the notion of childhood “innocence”—is systematically imposed on vulnerable minds, with or without parental consent. Drag Queen Story Hour (DQSH) has become the cynosure of parental disquiet.

Auto Unions Balk at Biden’s Plans To Force Americans Into Electric Vehicles

In a rare show of solidarity, American automakers and the unions representing their employees are begging the Biden administration to back off on its aggressive efforts to force Americans into electric vehicles in the name of combating climate change.

Leaders of the United Auto Workers union asked President Biden’s Environmental Protection Agency to water down a proposal to make upcoming emissions standards for internal combustion engines much stricter by 2027. The new standards would effectively require that two-thirds of all vehicles sold in the United States be electric by 2032.

Brown-John: Electric vehicles may come at substantial cost

… Another concern pertains to Ontario’s electrical grid which at the moment does not have sufficient capacity to service thousands of EV chargers. Don’t forget we’re also shifting away from natural gas to produce electricity.

The Ford government has been adding natural gas generators as a stop-gap measure to meet immediate needs. But this could preclude Ontario from accessing federal government carbon reduction incentives intended to reduce carbon emissions.

So, the obvious question is how in the long run does Ontario generate sufficient electricity to service thousands of EV chargers?

A good article illustrating the Cloudcuckooland inhabited by Trudeau and the like.

John Robson: NATO Pressure Won’t Stop Canada’s Free-Riding on US Defence Spending

According to a newspaper, not this one, as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau attends the NATO summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, this week “pressure will be on” to make a meaningful contribution to the alliance. Pressure being a colourless, odourless gas whose only known effect is to cause journalists to write headlines.

We’ve been free-riding on American defence spending since Trudeau Sr. scorned “pressure” to be less of a frivolous peacenik. No matter who’s in power, usually the Liberals, we never reached our oft-promised 2 percent of GDP on defence, mostly because we never tried. Nor will we.

Satanic Temple Loses Lawsuit to Overturn Texas Abortion Ban

This week the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas rejected its lawsuit, according to Bloomberg Law. The court described the lawsuit as cryptic and noted the lack of basic facts about plaintiff “Ann Doe’s” standing to sue.

Only suspect in the seven Chicago Tylenol murders is found dead in his Massachusetts home – as AG says he’s ‘saddened’ by 76-year-old’s death ‘because he didn’t die in prison’

The sole suspect in the Tylenol murders has been found dead in his Cambridge, Massachusetts home, ending officials’ hopes of one day convicting him for the killings that changed the way over-the-counter drugs are manufactured and sold.

James Lewis, 76, was the only person to have been convicted in connection to the seven poisonings after he attempted to extort $1million from Tylenol maker’s Johnson and Johnson to stop the killings – but he was never found guilty of the actual murders.

The killings of four women, two men, and a 12-year-old girl, caused worldwide panic and led to reforms in how over-the-counter medicines are packaged as the FDA introduced new tamper-proof packaging like foil seals.

Trudeau government increased federal employees 40% since election in 2015

OTTAWA — Another 21,000 federal workers hired since last year has brought the total added to the federal public service since Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was first elected to 98,268, according to information published online by the Treasury Board of Canada.

The federal public service, now at 357,247 employees, is nearly 40 per cent larger than it was in 2015, when the Liberals took power, when it counted 257,034 employees.

Trudeau is creating a vote bloc.

Disney World Hasn’t Felt This Empty in Years

Topple that statue!

Visitors to Disney theme parks this summer are encountering something they haven’t seen in a while: elbow room.

Travel analysts and advisers say traffic to Disney’s U.S. parks, and some rival parks, has slowed this summer. Data from a travel company that tracks line-waiting time at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla., shows that the Independence Day weekend was one of the slowest in nearly a decade.

All I know of Disney’s theme parks are the fight videos.

‘French people are angry’: communities react after protests

Just over a week since riots erupted in dozens of places across France, things have calmed down in Montmorency, an affluent Parisian suburb not far from the banlieue of Nanterre, where a French police officer fatally shot 17-year-old Nahel M, of north African descent, during a traffic stop on 27 June.

Beatrice, 37, who is on maternity leave, says the first two nights after the killing were calm in her neighbourhood, though constant sirens and bangs from fireworks could be heard.

Reasonably balanced for the Guardian.

China’s Advances in Space Warfare Are Terrifying

“China is steadily progressing toward becoming a world-class space leader, with the intent to match or surpass the United States by 2045.”

The indefatigable Bill Gertz of the Washington Times has a page-one story highlighting a Mitchell Institute report that warns that the United States is falling behind China in “counterspace capabilities” that will be crucial to success in any future war.

To quote the report: “The U.S. advantage in space is at risk … [T]he United States must maintain its access to space capabilities that are now threatened by China. And the United States must have the potential to deny China access to the space capabilities it needs to threaten U.S. space and terrestrial forces and national interests.”
