‘That’s too many’: Halifax Regional Police lose 30 members in six months

The union representing Halifax Regional Police (HRP) officers says the service is losing members at a rate the city can’t replace.

The interim president of the Halifax Regional Police Association warns staffing and morale are at an all-time low, and keeping people at work is a struggle.

Experts say police recruitment has failed to keep up with the needs of the 21st century.

The police are depolicing themselves.

Jesse Kline: Olivia’s Chow plan to cut the cost of living by taking more of your money

Olivia Chow’s victory in Monday’s mayoral byelection in Toronto could be seen coming a mile away. It was so clear, even days and weeks in advance, that any news scribes looking to have an easy go of it on election night could have had most of their copy written in advance. And it seems like many of them did.

Portland, Ore., Is Losing Residents Weary of Crime and High Housing Prices

PORTLAND, Ore.—Mark Rogers has made a list of things he misses about Portland—its vegan restaurants, Powell’s bookstore, public transit—and the things he doesn’t—having his things stolen, stepping in human excrement, extreme politics.

Terrible ideas, tedious shows, zero talent: Meghan and Harry’s trainwreck podcast career

By and large, if there is one thing that the world absolutely does not need any more of, it’s podcasts. And yet the death of Prince Harry and the Duchess of Sussex’s Spotify deal – as public and messy as it was – has by all accounts deprived us of an absolute corker.

Last week, Bloomberg reported that one podcast idea seriously mooted by Harry was to make an entire series about childhood trauma. Not just his own trauma, because he has obviously got enough mileage out of that elsewhere, but the trauma of a group best described as “world baddies”. As Bloomberg wrote, the concept of the show was as follows: “Harry would interview a procession of controversial guests, such as Vladimir Putin, Mark Zuckerberg and Donald Trump, about their early formative years and how those experiences resulted in the adults they are today.”

I hope they have been ridiculed enough to cause them to disappear from the public eye.

How Easy Is It to Fool A.I.-Detection Tools?

The pope did not wear Balenciaga. And filmmakers did not fake the moon landing. In recent months, however, startlingly lifelike images of these scenes created by artificial intelligence have spread virally online, threatening society’s ability to separate fact from fiction.

To sort through the confusion, a fast-burgeoning crop of companies now offer services to detect what is real and what isn’t.

Hamas in Sweden

The European Palestinians Conference, held in Malmö, Sweden on May 27, had clear and strong connections with Hamas, including through conference chairman Amin Abu Rashid. Before the conference, it was reported that several members of parliament from Sweden’s Green Party, Left Party and Social Democratic Party would be participating in the conference.

When the Swedish media wrote about the connection between the European Palestinians Conference and Hamas, however, MPs, one by one, began withdrawing from the conference — although, notably, without distancing themselves from Hamas.

Trudeau says opposition has to promise to believe his insane bullshit before launching new foreign interference probe

Trudeau says ‘full buy-in’ from opposition needed before launching new foreign interference probe

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the federal government won’t be announcing any next steps on probing foreign interference until the Liberals get “full buy-in” from the opposition parties, to avoid the process devolving as it did under former special rapporteur David Johnston.

“As we put forward proposals to the other parties on how we can move forward to restore Canadians’ confidence in our abilities to fight foreign interference, we will ensure before we launch any next process, that there is full buy-in by the other parties on how it will be done, and who will do it,” Trudeau told reporters on Wednesday.
