It’s unfair, humiliating if only the rich can build a family, pope says

Socially as well as economically, “starting a family has turned into a titanic effort, instead of being a shared value that everyone recognizes and supports,” Pope Francis told a conference in Rome.

ROME (CNS) — Starting a family and having children has become a kind of herculean task when instead it should be valued and supported by everyone, Pope Francis said at a meeting in Rome on Italy’s severe decline in population growth.

Today’s culture “is unfriendly, if not hostile, to the family, centered as it is on the needs of the individual, where individual rights are continually claimed and the rights of the family are not discussed,” the pope said at the meeting May 12.

Women face “almost insurmountable constraints,” he said, especially as they are often forced to choose between having a career and being a mother or caring for family members who are frail or need special care.

French Researcher on Muslim Brotherhood Sees Her Conference Cancelled

The French university has long been under the strong influence of what one may call ‘Islamo-leftism,’ i.e., the complacency of a part of the academic elite towards militant Islam, preventing any critical distance and any analysis of the Muslim religion and world. A researcher has just paid the price, seeing her planned conference at the Sorbonne on the Muslim Brotherhood ‘suspended,’ supposedly for security reasons.

3 Damning Equations to Defeat Global Warming Zealots

The true economic, social, and political cost of the measures proposed by governments (in the West only) to destroy their nations’ businesses and jobs and to impoverish every household is becoming ever more visible. At last, therefore, a few brave souls in the scientific and academic communities are beginning to question what I shall call — with more than a little justification — the Communist Party line on climate change.

So what if the royals are ‘terribly white’?

Two questions preoccupied the media in the run up to the coronation of King Charles III: how ‘multicultural’ should the coronation be? And should the royal family atone, or even make financial recompense, for its role in slavery? Last month, the king himself refused to rule out paying reparations for the transatlantic slave trade. Then, on the day of the coronation, we had Bridgerton star Adjoa Andoh complaining on ITV that the royal line-up on the Buckingham Palace balcony felt ‘terribly white’ and unrepresentative of modern Britain.

The Soros Activist at the Heart of California’s $800 Billion Slave Reparations

George Soros succeeds in turning black people against each other.

In 2021, the Equal Justice Institute celebrated a settlement with the University of California in which the system agreed to stop using SAT and ACT test scores, objective merit-based metrics, in college admissions, until 2025. The racialist lawsuit claimed that test scores violate the California Constitution’s Equal Protection Clause as “indicators” of race.

The “SAT is a barrier to equal opportunity”, Lisa Holder, a counsel with the Equal Opportunity Institute, claimed.

A generation on, east Germans are smarting over sneers from the west

What is an Ossi’s favourite sport? The bobsled: there’s a wall on one side, a wall on the other, and it’s all downhill.

East and west Germans, crudely nicknamed Ossis and Wessis, have been trading ostensibly harmless jokes about each other for decades. They are part of the cultural furniture of reunification, a way for people on both sides to smooth over the difficulties of rebuilding a nation after 45 years of division.

Royalist Parade Honouring Joan of Arc Banned by Paris Police

The traditional parade in honour of St. Joan of Arc, organised each year by the royalist movement Action Française, scheduled to take place on Avenue de l’Opéra in central Paris on Sunday, May 14th, has been banned by the Paris police prefecture.

Action Française has responded by announcing that it will file an appeal under the special procedure of référé-liberté to allow it to take place. Such an appeal to an administrative judge may be made in the event of an emergency: if an administrative decision seriously and illegally affects a fundamental right, such as freedom of assembly, freedom of expression, right to property, etc.

Canadians need a ‘wake-up call’ on China interference in Canada, Liberal MP says

A Liberal MP says a foreign agent registry could be a “wake-up call” for Canadians regarding potential Chinese interference in the country’s affairs.

John McKay, the MP for Toronto’s Scarborough—Guildwood, told Global News he’s not sure whether Canadians have completely come to grips with the extent China may be manipulating not only its diaspora in Canada but also the society at large.

The political brawl over ‘woke’ is about everything and nothing

Addressing the Liberal Party convention in Ottawa last week, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau invoked some of the criticism his government has gotten lately from the Conservative opposition.

“They either say investing in Canadians is a waste of money or that our policies are too woke,” he said. “Too woke?”

He continued, directing his gaze at the TV camera perched on a riser in the middle of the room: “Hey, Pierre Poilievre. It’s time for you to wake up.”

Spiraling in San Francisco’s Doom Loop

What it’s like to live in a city that no longer believes its problems can be fixed.

In the spring of 2019, Marc Benioff surveyed his kingdom and it looked good. He stood on the top floor of the Salesforce Tower, the tallest building in San Francisco, named after his company, then the largest employer in San Francisco. You could see every part of the city and out across the bay. The UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital and the Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland (to which Benioff had donated $250 million). The site of a 200-bed Navigation Center for the homeless (which Benioff had defended in the face of other rich — but less rich — San Franciscans who tried to fight it off). The city looked sun-kissed and thriving from this view: the elegant Golden Gate Bridge, Twin Peaks, the surreal green of the Marin Headlands.

“It’s cool up here, right?” said Benioff. “And the vibe. Are you getting the vibe, too? There’s, like, a vibe.”

There was indeed a vibe.
