How Mark Zuckerberg Led the Tech Industry Into a Metaverse Wasteland

A few years on, Silicon Valley’s brief obsession with the metaverse has assumed the quality of a bad dream, half-remembered. Legless avatars beckoned us into barren digital landscapes to … stand around and talk about NFTs? Parcels of “property” sold for millions of dollars? It was a … virtual world? No? A mixed-reality game? No? A new frontier? An escape from meatspace? A layer on top of it? Companies raised and spent billions of dollars on the metaverse without ever quite getting their stories straight about what it was supposed to be or do — they didn’t just lack a good pitch beyond “getting in early,” they lacked a coherent concept to pitch in the first place.

Pope Francis warns pets must not replace children in Italy

Starting a family in Italy is becoming a “titanic effort” that only the rich can afford, Pope Francis has warned.

Addressing a conference on Italy’s demographic crisis, he said pets were replacing children in many households.

Also on stage were dozens of young people, wearing t-shirts saying “we can do this” – alluding to convincing people to have more children.

Italy has one of the lowest fertility rates in the EU and births dropped below 400,000 last year – a new low.

Chinese Embrace Brazil as “Global Strategic Partner” as Brazilian President Visits China

The mid-April visit to China of newly inaugurated Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Lula) is an apparent triumph for the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in its effort to broaden its influence in Latin America. The visit also seems to have served Lula’s legacy dream of being perceived as a moral beacon and advocate for the impoverished “Global South.”

Liberal media circles the wagons around Biden’s corruption

Some people say that democracy dies in darkness.

But it can die in the full light of day too.

Especially if people are prevented from seeing what’s in front of them.

This week two bombshell events happened.

On the Republican side the candidate still most favored by the party’s base to be its nominee for the Presidency lost a civil case against writer E Jean Carroll.

Rental demand in Canada continues to outpace supply

Zumper’s most recent Canadian Rent Report shows 15 of the country’s most populous cities have seen their average rent increase on a monthly basis in 2023.

“With the national vacancy rate for rentals at less than 2 per cent, the demand in Canada has continued to outpace the available supply, which has led to spiking rents in most of the cities in this report,” the rental website said.

An Overwhelmed Border Patrol Is Missing an Epidemic of Runners and ‘Got-aways’

Border Patrol agents, equipped with sophisticated technology, attempt to apprehend migrants illegally crossing into the United States. But securing the border has become more difficult as agents are taken off the line to process unprecedented numbers of illegal migrants turning themselves in, instead of preventing smuggling, drug and human trafficking, and identifying national security threats. The end of Title 42 will push the numbers of migrants and got-aways even higher.

Toronto police have ended an investigation into the alleged hate-motived forcible confinement of a Grade 1 student at John Fisher Junior Public School, saying detectives found no evidence to support laying charges against staff.

The boy’s mother alleged in March that he was subjected to months of anti-Black racism at the north Toronto school. Police probed two specific allegations that he was confined in a closet-sized room in an administrator’s office and that hateful messages were written on a desk.

Ukraine’s Dogged Effort to Get Weapons to the Battlefield, Not the Black Market

Rocket launchers, precision-guided missiles and billions of dollars’ worth of other advanced American weapons have given Ukraine a fighting chance against Russia ahead of a counteroffensive. But if even a few of the arms wind up on the black market instead of the battlefield, a Ukrainian lawmaker gloomily predicted, “we’re done.”

The lawmaker, Oleksandra Ustinova, a former anti-corruption activist who now monitors foreign arms transfers to Ukraine, does not believe there is widespread smuggling among the priciest and most sophisticated weapons donated by the United States over the last year.

Liberal-funded pro sexual mutilation of children charity trying to ban Fox News

Jamie Sarkonak: Egale, the Liberal-funded charity trying to ban Fox News

The rights organization that asked the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to ban Fox News gets the majority of its money from government.

It’s an awfully lucrative funding stream for an organization that happens to call for the silencing of the federal government’s ideological opponents. While federal funding certainly isn’t a death sentence for credibility, it’s something to be mindful of — especially when that money is new, and especially when the recipient seems to align with government on many issues.

Florida bakery refuses to write ‘trans’ on customers’ cake

A Florida bakery refused to write the word “trans” on a cake requested by two social workers who had hoped to bring the treat to an event they had organized for the local transgender community.

Dandelion Hill, co-founder of the Orlando-based non-profit Peer Support Space, was heading to the organization’s Trans Joy Event on April 26, and stopped at the Colonialtown Publix to pick up a cake for the celebration.

To David Johnston: Canada needs a public inquiry

To David Johnston:

You have accepted the unenviable task of deciding upon the course of action to be followed by the government in the matter of Chinese intervention in Canada’s electoral process. You’ve been asked to review the findings of two closed-door panels that the federal government has set up to investigate Beijing’s interference activities in the 2019 and 2021 elections, and make recommendations that could include a formal inquiry, a judicial review, or some other process. That is the commitment that was made by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau when he appointed you as the independent special rapporteur on foreign interference in March.
