Jamie Sarkonak: Liberals defer to secret spiritual beliefs to approve energy projects

The phrase “evidence-based decision-making” was used a lot during the pandemic by government officials. “Following the science” was another common one.

It’s strange, then, that a government claiming to believe so deeply in rational thought has placed unverifiable spiritual belief at the core of how it judges the environmental impact of energy and other natural resources and infrastructure projects — and has shielded those beliefs from Canada’s transparency laws.

US charges Sam Bankman-Fried with bribing Chinese officials

The US has accused former FTX chief executive Sam Bankman-Fried of paying a $40mn bribe to one or more Chinese government officials in a revised indictment filed in federal court in Manhattan on Tuesday.

Prosecutors allege Bankman-Fried sent the bribe in cryptocurrency to Chinese officials in order to regain access to trading accounts that had been frozen by law enforcement in the country. The accounts were linked to Alameda Research, FTX’s sister company.

The new bribery charge was added to twelve counts already faced by the former FTX chief, whose exchange collapsed in November last year after it was unable to meet a wave of withdrawal demands from customers.

Afghan stabs two women to death at the Ismaili Centre in Lisbon in suspected honor killing

Two women have been stabbed to death at a Muslim religious centre in the Portuguese capital Lisbon, police say.

The attack took place at the Ismaili Centre on Avenida Lusíada. The suspect, who was in possession of a large knife, was shot in the leg by police.

He was then detained and has been taken to hospital. The motive for the attack is not yet clear.

Police said they received a call at about 11:00 local time after the suspect entered the centre.

Officers asked the suspect to stop the attack, but he disobeyed and was shot.

Speaking to SIC Notícias, the leader of the Ismaili community Nazim Ahmad said the attacker was Afghan and the two victims were Portuguese women.

NB: It may be an honor killing – Attack on Ismaili Center: It was not a terrorist attack, but an “honor crime”

Authorities are still investigating the motives that led a man aged around 40 to enter the Ismaili Center in Lisbon and attack the people there. At least two people died , two Ismaili women, one in their 20s and the other in their 40s. SIC commentator, Daniel Pinéu, believes that it was not a sectarian attack, nor a terrorist attack.

Daniel Pinéu argues that the contours of this attack lead to the theory that it could be a crime with personal motivations, especially taking into account the identity of the fatal victims, two Ishmaelite women.

Eight people were arrested in Brussels and Antwerp as part of an anti-terrorist operation on Monday evening, the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office has confirmed. Those close to the investigation told RTBF that the detainees “seemed determined to carry out a terrorist attack.”

… Among those detained, some of the individuals have been known to police for being radical Islamic extremists, two of whom were already under the police’s radar as a potential risk. Initially, the arrests had been conducted separately until investigators found a link between the violent men, as well as the other six radicals.

China campaign to influence local leaders bore fruit in Utah: report

China’s furtive efforts to affect policy and raise its stature worldwide achieved some of its greatest successes in Utah — a deeply religious and conservative state seemingly a world away from the machinations of Beijing’s Communist government, the Associated Press reported Monday.

For years, China and its affiliates in the US have worked behind-the-scenes to cultivate relationships with state and local officials and lawmakers, connections that have allowed Beijing to delay legislation it didn’t like and ditch resolutions that expressed dissatisfaction with its actions.

Increased Chinese Support for Russia Will Imperil the World

This week, Chinese president Xi Jinping met with Russian president Vladimir Putin to discuss the Russian invasion of Ukraine and Sino-Russo relations. During their meeting, Xi stated that Russia’s development had “significantly improved” while Putin claimed that China “made a colossal leap forward.”

The visit came just days after the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for Putin for committing war crimes in Ukraine. China is not a state party of the Rome Statute, a treaty recognizing the ICC. Thus, Xi’s visit suggests that China feels no need to hold the Russians accountable for their ongoing invasion of Ukraine. Many members of the international community are also skeptical of China’s neutrality in the war, given Xi’s close relationship with Putin.
