OTTAWA—The public inquiry report on the government’s unprecedented use of the Emergencies Act to deal with so-called “Freedom Convoy” protesters concluded the move was regrettable, but ultimately warranted.
Yet it wasn’t the last word on the controversial decision.
After losing eight million egg-laying hens to avian influenza in 2015, Versova Management Co. spent tens of millions of dollars on laser systems, sound cannons and on-site worker showers to shield flocks from the virus spread by wild birds.
Versova lost another two million or so hens in the latest outbreak, showing the limits of costly industry protections.
“We’re fighting an epic battle,” said J.T. Dean, president of Versova, one of the five largest U.S. egg producers. “We have to be perfect.”
They neglect that true psychopaths, like the perpetrator of the Michigan State tragedy, cruise through background checks and red flag screenings.
Whenever there is a horrific mass shooting somewhere in the country, the liberal chattering classes begin the usual mantra. Calls for red flag laws and a ban on assault weapons flood the op-ed pages of the New York Times and the Washington Post, even if the crime in question would not have been prevented by such legislation. The recent tragedy on the campus of Michigan State University is a case in point. The shooter, Anthony McRae, did not use an assault weapon, and a red flag law would not have worked in his case. McRae was despondent over the death of his mother but was not previously violent, nor had he threatened anyone before the shooting. If depression or mental illness became a criterion for disarming an individual, most of our country’s citizens — including at least one serving senator — could be disarmed at some point in their lives.
KYIV, Ukraine — Ukraine found a way to hit deep behind enemy lines with a series of mysterious explosions in Russian-held territory early Wednesday, even as Ukrainians themselves were warned that Moscow appears poised to unleash a new barrage of attacks.
Half a year after the southern port city of Mariupol fell to a fierce Russian siege, nearly a dozen explosions were reported there overnight into Wednesday. Russian-occupied areas of the Donetsk, Luhansk and Kherson regions were also hit, according to reports and video.

When people ask me whether elections in big Democrat cities are honest, I answer that I hope they’re fixed because, if they’re not, that means that those cities’ residents, surrounded by failure and decay, keep voting for more of the same. One of those “more of the same” trends in leftist cities has been to vote in hard-left Soros-funded prosecutors who refuse to prosecute criminals. Kimberly Gardner, in St. Louis, Missouri, is one such prosecutor, and she’s being charged with responsibility for the fact that a teenager heading to college on an athletic scholarship is now a double amputee, having lost her legs to a violent career criminal.
Communist domestic terrorist Angela Davis should be in prison, but since the Left took over America, she’s instead a prominent academic and black nationalist figure. And she’s never stopped calling America racist.
Vladimir Putin’s armies launched their fateful attack on Ukraine a year ago today. Tanks and troops poured across the frontier in what most Western governments feared would be a lightning thrust of fratricidal violence that would throttle Ukrainian independence. Then came the resistance, Russia not only held at bay but, miraculously, thrown back. As the world looks on, expectantly, waiting for the next decisive crash of momentum, a grim pessimism has again taken hold: 2022 might have been a year of heroism, but many fear 2023 might be the year the war settles into something far more conventional — and worrying.
This week we examined the field of Machine Learning Fairness, which seeks to imprint AI programs with leftist assumptions and priorities. Following the money behind the leading organizations of ML Fairness leads to some familiar funding sources, including leftist billionaires Pierre Omidyar, George Soros, and Reid Hoffman.
It’s not a conspiracy theory to believe the green elites don’t give a toss about working people.
Taking the meme ‘Everyone I Don’t Like Is Hitler’ to dizzying new heights, now we’re being told it’s far right to want to drive your car. Motorist and fascist, peas in a pod. Protesters against Low Traffic Neighbourhoods and so-called 15-minute cities – policies being adopted in various regions of the UK that will severely limit where and how often a person can drive his car – have been damned as hard-right loons. Who but a modern-day Brownshirt would bristle at eco-measures designed to save Mother Earth from car toxins? One author attended this month’s colourful protest against Oxford City Council’s anti-driving policies and decreed that this motley crew of car-lovers are on ‘the road to fascism’. Only they’ll never get there, presumably, given the elites’ penchant for road restrictions.
Joy Behar triggered shocked gasps from The View audience after suggesting victims of the Ohio toxic train crash had it coming to them for voting for former U.S. president Donald Trump.
During Thursday’s show, Behar, 80, declared: ‘I don’t know why they would ever vote for him, for somebody who, by the way, he placed someone with deep ties to the chemical industry in charge of the EPA’s chemical safety office.’
‘That’s who you voted for in that district,’ she said, pointing directly at the camera.
The race hustlers will continue to push for a new segregation of safe spaces for the racialized, what they’ll end up with is not the progressive paradise of their imagination.
The current progressive anti-white hysteria will damage Blacks far more than any other racial group and far more than the KKK could ever hope to accomplish.
A quiet but massive withdrawal of support, empathy and interaction will be the hallmarks of this new segregation.

The Trudeau government is actively obstructing efforts to shine a public light on Beijing’s interference at the core of Canada’s democratic processes. Why?
Here’s how bad it’s got. It was just another day in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s “post-national” state, and the proceedings of the Standing Committee on Procedure and House Affairs collapsed in chaos on Tuesday after the Liberals moved to hobble the committee’s ability to elicit documents related to Beijing’s clandestine interference in the 2021 federal election.
It was ugly. Here’s how ugly.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino have more than once insinuated that alarms about Beijing’s interference in the 2019 and 2021 federal elections are a ploy in a Trump-style strategy to undermine public confidence in the legitimacy of democratic election outcomes. That should show you just how badly Team Trudeau wants us all to shut up about what Beijing has been up to in Canada, and to stop asking how much Trudeau and his ministers know about it.
Something is terribly rotten within the Liberal Party.
On the surface, the two cases seemed almost identical, the resident of a house responding both times with lethal violence to an invasion by multiple thieves.
A new Fraser Institute poll found 42% of Canadians — and as many as 50% in the 18-24 age range — are in favour of socialism but few want to foot the bill for it.
The study, done by Leger for the Institute in the fall of 2022, also found socialism support drops to 38% among Canadians over the age of 55.
