Why Michigan is trying to shut down Canada’s Enbridge Line 5 pipeline
An ageing pipeline crossing part of the Great Lakes has led to a standoff between the US state of Michigan and Canada. The outcome of the battle over Line 5, which delivers energy to the US Midwest and central Canada, will be viewed by many as a bellwether of how North America will balance its energy future with its environmental commitments.
The most contentious part of the Line 5 pipeline – which runs from Superior, Wisconsin, by way of Michigan to Sarnia, Canada – sits on the bed of the Straits of Mackinac. The narrow waterway connects Lake Michigan and Lake Huron – two of the world’s largest lakes.
In 2018, an anchor from a shipping freighter passing through the Straits struck and damaged the pipe, bringing to the fore longstanding concerns from environmental campaigners and others over possible spills.
Metropolitan Police officer admits to 48 rapes
A Metropolitan Police officer has admitted more than 80 sex offences, including 48 rapes against 12 women during two decades at the force, making him one of the country’s worst sex offenders.
David Carrick, 48, a firearms officer in the Met’s Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection Command, pleaded guilty to dozens more offences, including sexual assault, false imprisonment, coercive control and assault by penetration.

Opposition MPs are requesting a House of Commons committee meeting to examine the large increase in government contracts being awarded to the U.S. consulting firm McKinsey since the Trudeau Liberals took power in 2015.
“In the past seven years, McKinsey & Company has garnered $66 million in federal contracts, representing a 30-fold increase from the previous government according to media reporting,” reads a letter signed by all the opposition members on the Standing Committee on Government Operations and Estimates and sent on Jan. 13 to Conservative MP Kelly McCauley, the committee’s chair.

Authorities said the death toll from Saturday’s strike rose to 40 and that 30 people remained missing Monday. Tall cranes swung across the jagged gaps in a row of residential towers, the engines growling as residents of one of Ukraine’s largest cities watched largely in silence under a gray sky.

Trudeau says Ottawa looking at bail reform after premiers demand action

Premiers from all 13 provinces and territories signed the letter sent to Trudeau on Friday. In it, they say the time for action is now and “our heroic first responders cannot wait.”
