The Mayor of El Paso took one look at the empty streets around the Greyhound Bus terminal where migrants had once slept, and the trickle of new arrivals crossing the Rio Grande river, and realized that President Joe Biden may leave his border city with the idea that the crisis was over.

So, he took matters into his own hands.

Oscar Leeser, a Democrat who has clashed with the Biden administration over its handling of the border crisis, printed out a selection of images he had taken with his phone.

Parents ‘in disbelief’ after ISIS flag sent out by Toronto school principal in email

For Canadians, and millions the world over, the infamous black and white flag flown by ISIS is a symbol of terrorism, death and persecution.

When an image of that very flag was sent in an email to parents in October by the principal of a downtown Toronto elementary school, it left some like May Woo “shocked” and “in disbelief.”

1938 Come Again: America Must Embrace Naval Rearmament

When the year 1938 is mentioned, the first thing that comes to mind is the Munich Conference, which has become the prime example of appeasement. Adolf Hitler claimed he was protecting ethnic Germans in Czechoslovak’s Sudetenland border area just as Vladimir Putin claims he is protecting ethnic Russians in Ukraine’s Donetsk region. Both aggressors seized these disputed lands when the Great Powers refused to defend the smaller states. Hitler then moved to take the rest of Czechoslovak in 1939 without a fight, and then later in the year invaded Poland. Unlike the Czechs, the Ukrainians have fought the invasion. Their valiant actions and Russian military failures changed the strategic landscape. The United States and NATO have sent arms of increasing sophistication to the Ukrainians to keep up their defense and deter any expansion of the war into Poland or other countries. History is taking a different, hopefully, better course.

The Conspiracy Theory That Deranged American Public Life

It turns out that random drivel produced by foreigners and thrown into the enormous, all-consuming maw of American social media doesn’t have much effect.

Not all conspiracy theories are created equal.

The same people who pride themselves on rigorously insisting on the facts — ideally, explained in the dulcet tones of an NPR anchor — are happy to embrace conspiracy theories supportive of their own worldview.

This is why the idea that Russian disinformation on social media influenced or even decided the 2016 election has gained such purchase, even though a new study finds, unsurprisingly, no evidence for it.

The real reasons for European elites’ demonization of Benjamin Netanyahu

In the liberal media and among the intelligentsia and the European political class there reigns an untroubled unanimity on the subject of Israel: it is no longer a democracy because its new government is of the Right. Too far to the right. I have no particular sympathy for Benjamin Netanyahu, but I must observe that the manner of his election was perfectly legitimate. Nor have I any sympathy—far from it—for the extremist Jewish parties that have entered into the government coalition, but they, too, were elected. Thus, I cannot see on what grounds the objecting Europeans allow themselves to denounce Israeli democracy. I am reminded of a famous proposal by Bertolt Brecht: “Since the people vote against the government, the people must be dissolved.” As it happens, a majority of Israelis consider themselves represented in Netanyahu’s new government, and the minority will take back power in a few more years. Such are the mechanics of universal suffrage.

Russia’s Wagner group fighting ‘heavy, bloody battles’ for control of Soledar

The Russian mercenary group Wagner has said it is fighting “heavy, bloody battles” for control of the town of Soledar as part of Moscow’s months-long offensive to capture Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region.

Wagner’s claims appeared to be confirmed by the UK’s Ministry of Defence (MoD), which suggested that most of Soledar, a small town about six miles (10km) north of the key city of Bakhmut, was in Russian hands after Moscow continued to make “tactical advances”.

The MoD said the efforts in Soledar over the past four days appeared to be aimed at encircling Bakhmut, although it added it believed that scenario was unlikely at present.

A fifth of Americans approve of the Jan 6 Capitol takeover

The proportion is more than double that of two years ago

Just as America marks its two-year Jan 6 anniversary (and as Brazil makes sense of its own imitation on Jan 8th), a new poll has found that 20% of Americans now approve of the Capitol takeover. This marks an 11% increase from two years ago, when just 9% said they strongly or somewhat approved of the takeover.

That 20% of Americans — equivalent to one-fifth of the country — show some degree of approval for the Jan 6 takeover is an increase of last year’s finding (14%) and the year of the event, when it was only 9% approval.

With each new revelation of FBI, White House, Covid, Media and Twitter misdeeds who can blame them?

Dirty bomb fears as uranium is found in cargo at Heathrow: Package ‘shipped from Pakistan to UK-based Iranians’ is at centre of Met Police anti-terror probe

A shipment of uranium has been seized at Heathrow airport – sparking an investigation by counter terrorism police who fear there could have been plans to use it to make a dirty bomb.

The undeclared material was discovered on December 29 on a passenger flight which arrived from Oman.

The package originated from Pakistan and was destined for an Iranian business with a premises in the UK.

Poilievre told reporters today he is in favour of legal immigration but can understand the desperation that leads migrants to cross into Canada through the unofficial entry point south of Montreal.
