Mayor John Tory and Premier Doug Ford appear headed for a showdown over the financial impacts of Ontario’s new housing bill.

A day after Tory demanded the provincial Progressive Conservative government make an ironclad promise to fully compensate Toronto for any development charge revenue the city loses as a result of the legislation, Ford asserted the bill will have no ill effect on municipalities’ bottom lines, and accused Toronto of mismanaging the revenue it already collects.

Huge waste is a given in all things government.

Ministerial staff shared info about soldiers’ role in self-styled ‘Freedom Convoy’

Emails released through a public inquiry suggest federal Liberal political aides were scrambling earlier this year to figure out the extent to which members of the Canadian Armed Forces were supporting the self-described “Freedom Convoy” protests that had gridlocked downtown Ottawa.

The internal communications are among thousands of documents submitted to the Public Order Emergency Commission, which is looking at the Liberal government’s decision to invoke the Emergencies Act to end the demonstrations in February.

The message started to spread—mostly on Wechat, China’s No. 1 chat app—that a few people were gathering and lighting candles on Urumqi Road, in the French Concession, which is full of high-end bakeries and eateries and Shanghai’s famous, three-story lane houses.

EU throws gala party for ‘global gateway’ metaverse — and only six people show up

The much vaunted metaverse is a virtual world of immersive experiences and transhuman avatars but, as the European Union has discovered, it can be a real life disaster.

After spending €387,000 (£332,500) on creating a virtual world to promote the EU’s “global gateway” development projects, officials hoped to introduce young people to the website with a special “gala” night of “music and fun” .

“Are you ready to party?” asked the invitation to the event on Tuesday night.

Like I said, it’s the new 3D Movie Glasses of tech.

China fights lockdown protests by targeting smartphones

Authorities in cities across China are using sophisticated surveillance methods to dampen anti-lockdown demonstrations, according to lawyers and protesters.

Several sources told DW that police in large cities like Shanghai have been randomly checking people’s phones on the street or on subways. Police have demanded people provide personal information and immediately remove apps like Telegram, Twitter or Instagram.

Others have said they were called by police and had their phones searched by authorities.

“Police warned me not to use Telegram and asked me to stop sharing information about the pandemic through the software,” said one protester with the surname Lin, who declined to be identified by his full name due to security concerns.

Military was told to prepare to intervene in convoy protests, Defence Department official says

The Defence Department’s top official says he directed the military to prepare to intervene in the “Freedom Convoy” protests earlier this year, but the resulting plans were never seriously considered – in part due to concerns about another Oka Crisis.

Deputy minister Bill Matthews and another top defence official also said the Canadian Armed Forces was prepared to fly police officers to demonstration sites across the country, but that its tow trucks were too big – and too old – to help with the protests.

Matthews and Defence Department associate deputy minister Stefanie Beck made the comments in an August interview with lawyers for the public inquiry looking into the Liberal government’s decision to use the Emergencies Act to end the protests.

That’s so Canada – Our tow trucks are crap.

Toronto — Conservative commentator Douglas Murray and veteran reporter Matt Taibbi soundly defeated their opponents in a Wednesday evening debate on the question of whether to trust the mainstream media, convincing a significant segment of the audience to abandon their faith in an institution they say is hopelessly compromised by bias.
