The new vandals: how museums turned on their own collections
This week I had the pleasure of going to the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford. I say ‘the pleasure’ but visiting the Pitt Rivers was never precisely a pleasure. Twenty years ago, as an undergraduate, the collection was something of a rite of initiation. The place, filled with strange and wondrous objects, was famed above all for its gruesome pickled heads: artefacts reminiscent of the ‘coconut’ that the one-eyed Brigadier Ritchie-Hook collects in Evelyn Waugh’s Sword of Honour.
What did we think of them in those now distant days? That they were part of another age, naturally – a collection of artefacts from another time, representing another era, with its interests and curiosities.

Kathy purchased a similar pic when we enjoyed a wonderful visit there.
It hangs in our home and I am glad of the memory it keeps warm in my heart.
Kathy took me places I would never think to go.

Pope Francis has walked on eggshells to avoid the wrath of Vladimir Putin and, likewise, of the Russian Orthodox Church, which has long presented an altogether intractable if not impossible set of challenges for the Roman Catholic Church, recently rearing its ugly head yet again in the Ukraine war (that’s a separate column altogether). Francis has repeatedly and delicately prayed for the people of Ukraine and of Russia, each step of the way carefully avoiding poking a stick at the bear in the living room: Vladimir Putin.
That appears to have changed.

HOW do you know when politicians are lying? When they are signalling virtue. As the last three years has shown, their supposed liberal values are a façade, masking a self-serving and authoritarian outlook. Unless useful to their career, they are not really interested in the wants and needs of ordinary people. They want to be seen as progressive and compassionate, but by performance rather than by principles and practice. Our corrupt mainstream media do their bidding.
Such pretence is evident in the brazenly hypocritical reactions to protests in China against Covid-19 restrictions. Political leaders and mainstream newspapers are competing for the most sanctimonious grandstanding.

Canada: Ambassador tells EU that deforestation rules ‘burdensome’
Canada’s ambassador to the European Union has voiced concern with proposed EU rules to curb deforestation.
A November letter from Ailish Campbell said the rules add “burdensome” requirements and will hurt trade between Canada and the EU.
The EU regulation aims to limit the trade of products linked to deforestation worldwide.

Russian mercenary videos ‘top 1bn views’ on TikTok
TikTok is hosting dozens of videos that glorify violence by Russia’s Wagner Group of mercenaries and they have been viewed more than a billion times, according to a new report.
Wagner has sent mercenaries into Ukraine in big numbers.
US-based NewsGuard, which focuses on online misinformation, says some of the videos appear to show the execution of a former Russian mercenary.
TikTok has said it will act against any content violating its policies.

Belgium’s World Cup Football Riots: A Symbol of the Failure of the Migration Policy
Violent clashes took place in Belgium after the Morocco-Belgium football match during the World Cup in Qatar.
Riots took place in Brussels, Antwerp and Liege, where a police station was attacked by about 50 “youths”, and also in several cities in the Netherlands. Beyond these incidents, the popular jubilation in the predominantly Moroccan neighborhoods of Brussels, especially in Molenbeek, revealed that in these areas, the Moroccan identity has remained much stronger than the Belgian one, even though most of the inhabitants have dual nationality.
Multicult is toxic.
A society only exists where its inhabitants regard themselves as bound together by a culture composed of language, religion, law, literature, traditions, customs and so on expressed through civic and political ideals embedded in the historic development of that culture. Different ethnicities can sign up to the norms established by that culture, even if they are newcomers who didn’t share in its development. But there has to be an identifiable overarching culture to which they can sign up.
Multiculturalism, by contrast, means that no one culture defines a nation which is composed instead of a babel of cultures. Moreover, multiculturalism holds that the indigenous culture cannot declare its values superior to any other. So it cannot lay down cultural norms which everyone is expected to share. Multiculturalism therefore destroys society as a body of people with a shared collective national vision.

Doug Ford’s Progressive Conservative government is funding an all-ages Christmas-themed drag show to be held in Kitchener Thursday evening.
The Jingle Bell Rock event featuring Miss Drew and Crew, a group of three drag queen performers, will be held at Bingeman’s amusement theme park in Kitchener, Ontario, and the flyer for the event shows that funding was provided by the Government of Ontario.
