RCMP says recording of disputed Lucki phone call did exist but has been deleted

One of Canada’s top Mounties says there was a recording of a conference call with the RCMP commissioner that sparked concerns of political interference — but it has since been deleted.

Deputy Commissioner Brian Brennan testified Friday about the recording before the Mass Casualty Commission leading the public inquiry into the 2020 Nova Scotia mass shootings.

Brennan said Dan Brien, director of media relations with the RCMP, recorded at least some of the phone call. Brennan was also on the April 28, 2020, call with Commissioner Brenda Lucki and high-ranking Nova Scotia RCMP officers and civilian staff.

Parole records reveal lengthy criminal past of gunman behind GTA shooting rampage

The suspected gunman who killed two, including a Toronto police officer, and injured three others, had a lengthy criminal history, according to parole records obtained by Global News.

A Parole Board of Canada decision from 2010 stated that Sean Petrie had previous convictions for violent crimes like robbery and illegally possessing guns, and also suggested he had alleged gang connections.

Some Liberal MPs say the party needs to refocus as it prepares to go head-to-head against a new brand of Conservatives — including being “less woke,” according to Radio-Canada.

A handful of MPs spoke to the French-language arm of CBC — most on the condition that they not be named — as the party gathers for a caucus meeting in the coastal resort town of Saint Andrews, N.B.

The meeting is meant to underline the party’s priorities ahead of the fall sitting, which will see a new face leading His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition: Pierre Poilievre.

The European Union’s top intelligence official canceled a trip to Taiwan after his top-secret preparations were seemingly leaked to Beijing in advance, according to two diplomats with knowledge of the situation.

José Casimiro Morgado, director of the European Union Intelligence and Situation Centre, was supposed to make the below-the-radar visit to meet Taiwanese officials in October, according to the diplomats.

Collaborators with Russian forces are fleeing, say Ukrainian officials

Ukrainian citizens accused of collaborating with occupying Russian forces in Kharkiv province and the neighbouring Donbas region are fleeing from recently liberated areas and queueing to cross into Russia at the border, Ukrainian officials have said.

“The ‘commandant’s offices’, ‘prosecutor’s offices’, occupiers and gauleiters are leaving,” the governor of Luhansk province, Serhiy Haidai, wrote on Telegram. “The Ukrainian flag, which our guerrillas raised last night over the administration building in Kreminna, remains intact as the Russians now seem to have understood everything so they don’t dare to take it down. Russians and their collaborators are fleeing from Luhansk region, heading towards Russia”. Luhansk makes up the Donbas region with Donetsk to the south.

The Chinese economy’s projected growth this year has slowed to about 3%, missing the government’s target of 5.5% by an embarrassingly wide margin.

Said Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. of the Atlanta jury that convicted Leo Frank of murdering a 13-year-old female employee in 1913, “Mob law does not become due process of law by securing the assent of a terrified jury.” Frank was Jewish. The jurors were not necessarily anti-Semitic, but they had good reason to be terrified of the mobs that were. After Georgia Gov. John Slaton commuted Frank’s sentence from death to life imprisonment, the mobs stormed the prison, abducted Frank, and hanged him. Slaton and his wife were forced to leave the state.
