Europe is folding in the face of China’s EV dominance

The EU is considering widening its tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles to include hybrid vehicles, in an attempt to finally get an upper hand in the EV market. The move would extend the bloc’s existing anti-subsidy measures beyond battery-only models, broadening the range of cars which receive tariffs. Yet, the underlying truth is that tariffs have not worked so far: Chinese-made cars have even gained ground in Europe, with a record high — 12.8% — of the continent’s EV market share.

It is time to invoke the NATO Treaty’s Article 4

In the current geopolitical environment, and particularly in the wake of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, we have seen frequent references to NATO’s Article 5: the “one for all and all for one” obligation of allies to assist one another in the face of attack.

Less attention is paid to the article of the North Atlantic Treaty that immediately precedes it. Article 4 stipulates that “The Parties will consult together whenever, in the opinion of any of them, the territorial integrity, political independence or security of any of the Parties is threatened.” Once Article 4 is invoked, it would prompt a meeting of the North Atlantic Council (NATO’s permanent ambassador-level body) to consider and respond to this threat. This provision for collective consultations has rarely been invoked, but last September, both Poland and Estonia on separate occasions triggered an Article 4 meeting in light of hostile Russian actions.

Forty years ago, as a young USA Today reporter, I interviewed Leonard Nimoy about Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. Nimoy was un-Spock-like giddy about the commercial and critical hit he directed and co-starred in. “The biggest laugh,” he said, “came when McCoy says to Kirk about my still mentally addled Spock [Mr. Spock had “died” two films earlier in the classic Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan], ‘He really has gone where no man has gone before.’ Because if you think about it — how did Dr. McCoy know that this was the line that opened every Star Trek episode?” To which I said, “Maybe that’s the Starfleet credo.” “Good point,” Nimoy said.

Facial recognition pilot cuts crime, says Met

A trial of Live Facial Recognition technology (LFR) in south London has helped cut robbery and shoplifting and led to more than 100 arrests, according to the Metropolitan Police.

The pilot scheme in Croydon, which launched last October, has seen fixed cameras mounted on street furniture instead of mobile vans, which map a person’s unique facial features and matches them against faces on watch lists.

The Met said a third of the arrests involved offences against women and girls, including strangulation and sexual assault.

‘This is unprecedented’: New report card shows Toronto’s mental health is collapsing

Toronto’s mental health has deteriorated so rapidly over the past decade that the number of residents who say they are doing well has collapsed from nearly three quarters to barely half, a situation that at least one expert says is “unprecedented” and “crazy.”

A report, released by ThriveTO in partnership with the Canadian Mental Health Association, CAMH, the City of Toronto and other organizations, found the percentage of Torontonians who describe their mental health as “very good” or “excellent” fell from 73 per cent in 2015 to 52 per cent in 2022.
