Highland Park Shooter Robert Eugene Crimo planned attack for weeks – Police spokesman Sgt. Chris Covelli

A man suspected of killing six people at a 4 July parade near Chicago planned the attack for weeks, police say.

Law enforcement believe that Robert Crimo III, 21, legally bought the high-powered rifle he used in the attack.

The suspect is believed to have disguised himself in women’s clothing to escape the scene with the fleeing crowd, officials added.

"We do believe [Highland Park shooter] Crimo pre-planned this attack for several weeks … The rifle was purchased in Illinois and the information we have thus far is that it appears to have been purchased legally."

Former Ontario bureaucrats charged in alleged $11M COVID-19 fraud are headed back to court

The Ontario bureaucrats fired after the alleged theft of $11 million in provincial COVID-19 relief funds are headed back to court this week as criminal proceedings continue.

Sanjay and Shalini Madan, a married Toronto couple terminated from the public service in 2020 after the alleged fraud, will be in long trial assignment court on Wednesday.

They were charged last September by the Ontario Provincial Police, but their criminal trial might not begin in earnest until September 2023.

Saanich, B.C. bank shooter was rejected by military, CAF says

One of the twin brothers who was killed in a shootout with police outside a bank in Saanich, B.C., last week had applied to join the Canadian Armed Forces but was rejected, a military spokesperson confirmed Monday.

Mathew Auchterlonie had tried to join the Canadian Army but did not pass the aptitude test, the national defence spokesperson said.

The spokesperson declined to say when he applied.

Hacker claims to have obtained data on 1 billion Chinese citizens

A hacker has claimed to have stolen the personal information of 1 billion Chinese citizens from a Shanghai police database, in what would amount to one of the biggest data breaches in history if found to be true.

The anonymous hacker, identified only as “ChinaDan”, posted on hacker forum Breach Forums last week offering to sell the more than 23 terabytes (TB) of data for 10 bitcoin, equivalent to about $200,000 (£165,000).

“In 2022, the Shanghai National Police (SHGA) database was leaked. This database contains many TB of data and information on billions of Chinese citizen,” the post said.
