Carney’s EV deal with Beijing is high-wire diplomacy with risks on both sides

One day before Prime Minister Mark Carney arrived in Beijing, U.S. President Donald Trump offered his latest dismissal of the Canadian auto industry. The North American free-trade pact is “irrelevant,” Mr. Trump said while touring a Ford Motor Co. plant in Michigan, and the U.S. should stop buying Canadian cars.

Mr. Carney’s response came on Friday.

It will be great for Carney and the China class and that’s all it was intended to be.

Special forces first to get new military helicopters expected to start arriving in 2033

Canadian special forces will receive the first of a new fleet of helicopters starting in 2033, followed by other rotary aircraft to be ordered later for army units.

The federal government will start consultations with defence firms in the coming months on the new project, the Department of National Defence confirmed to the Ottawa Citizen.

Councillor who called grooming gang victims ‘white trash’ to keep seat

A former Labour council leader who referred to grooming victims as “poor white trash in Rotherham” could remain a councillor for another year without a public vote.

Dennis Jones stepped down as leader of Peterborough city council, apologised and was suspended by the Labour Party after his comments were made public in September last year.

Mr Jones now sits as an independent councillor and was due to face re-election in May.

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney said Friday he found “much alignment” between his views on Greenland’s sovereignty and those of Chinese President Xi Jinping in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats against the territory.

“I had discussions with President Xi about the situation in Greenland, about our sovereignty in the Arctic, about the sovereignty of the people of Greenland and people of Denmark, and I found much alignment of views in that regard,” Carney said at a press conference in Beijing.

BEIJING AND OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney will accept a role on U.S. President Donald Trump’s newly formed Gaza “Board of Peace,” according to a senior Canadian government official.

Trump will serve as chairman of the board, which includes U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and former U.K. prime minister Tony Blair, and which is designed to oversee the U.S. peace plan to end the war between Israel and Hamas.

Trump to hit Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and Finland with tariffs over Greenland

Donald Trump has announced tariffs on the UK and other European countries for their opposition to a US takeover of Greenland.

The US president posted on Truth Social on Saturday that a 10 per cent tariff on all goods sent to the US would be imposed from Feb 1 on Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and Finland, before being increased to 25 per cent on June 1.

He accused the countries of creating a “very dangerous situation for the Safety, Security, and Survival of our Planet” after they sent a small contingent of troops to Greenland to help Denmark prepare military exercises.

Iran supreme leader admits thousands killed during recent protests

Iran’s supreme leader has for the first time publicly acknowledged that thousands of people were killed, “some in an inhuman, savage manner”, during recent protests.

A violent response to the unrest has claimed 3,090 lives, according to US-based Iranian Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), with some activist groups putting the death toll far higher. An internet blackout has made it extremely difficult to get clear information.

In a speech on Saturday, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said thousands had been killed and blamed the US for the deaths.

Trump Administration Begins Criminal Inquiry Into Minnesota Leaders

The Trump administration has opened a criminal investigation into elected Democrats in Minnesota, according to a senior law enforcement official familiar with the matter, a major escalation in the fight between the federal government and local officials over the aggressive immigration crackdown underway in the city.

The investigation would focus on allegations that Gov. Tim Walz and Jacob Frey, the mayor of Minneapolis, had conspired to impede thousands of federal agents who have been sent to the city since last month. Last week, one of those agents killed a 37-year-old woman, Renee Good.

In 2005, at the age of 17, Michael Williams participated in the torturous murder of 13-year-old Nina Courtepatte. He lured the girl from West Edmonton Mall to a golf course with four of his friends. A member of the group hit Courtepatte in the head with a wrench, knocking her to the ground; Williams and one of his companions then raped her as the others held her down. After further torture (including numerous cuts to the face), Williams and co. bludgeoned her in the head with a hammer until she died.
