In the fall, Prime Minister Mark Carney laid out a plan to double Canada’s non-U.S. exports by 2035. What he failed to make explicit was that in order to do so, he would be cozying up to some of the world’s most reprehensible dictators.

On Tuesday, Carney embarked on a world tour that will take him to Beijing and Doha — in a trip billed as promoting economic resilience by “building our strength at home, working to double our non-U.S. exports and attracting massive new investment” — before making a stop at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Tehran morgue videos show the brutality of Iran’s crackdown on protesters

Distressing new videos have emerged from a mortuary in Tehran showing rows of bodies, blood soaked floors and crowds of people searching for loved ones following a deadly government crackdown on protesters in Iran.

The videos analysed by BBC Verify and BBC Persian, which are too graphic to show, contain some of the most shocking examples so far of how brutal the government’s retaliation has been since the unrest began on 28 December.

Forensic examination of the footage reveals nearly 200 bodies laid throughout the mortuary complex, many with visible wounds and one victim identified as young as 16.

Mayor Frey accuses ICE of ‘causing chaos’ in Minneapolis after illegal migrant who ambushed fed agent is shot

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey claimed ICE agents in the city were “causing chaos” after an illegal immigrant armed with a shovel “ambushed” an officer and was shot on Wednesday.

Frey blamed the nearly 3,000 federal officers deployed across Minneapolis as the reason for the disorder — which included the shooting death of 37-year-old anti-ICE agitator Renee Nicole Good — that has taken hold of the Minnesota area over the last week.

Woman identifying as a man is ‘raped in all-male psychiatric hospital ward’, court hears

A transgender man was raped within an hour of being admitted to an all-male ward of a secure psychiatric NHS hospital, a court heard.

The biological female was earmarked immediately by other patients, with one alleged attacker shouting ‘no Adam’s apple, no Adam’s apple,’ prosecutors said.

The alleged victim went into a side room to avoid the men asking, ‘Are you a girl?’ but was followed by Luther Badejo and Davointe Thomas.

British woman removed from ultramarathon after Muslims threaten to behead her

A British woman has been withdrawn from an ultramarathon after receiving online threats to behead her.

Sarah Porter was 30 miles through the 108-mile Montane Winter Spine Challenger South endurance race along the Pennine Way when organisers made the decision to withdraw her because of safety concerns.

Porter was undertaking the challenge to raise money for young girls and women in Afghanistan and received death threats online, with some social media posts appearing to suggest she would be decapitated on January 11.

Ontarians toasting Doug Ford’s Crown Royal ban, poll suggests

Ontarians support Premier Doug Ford’s removal of Crown Royal whisky from LCBO shelves to protest the company’s closure of its bottling plant here, a new Abacus Data poll suggests.

Ford has vowed to stop selling the popular Manitoba-made rye at Ontario liquor stores after U.K.-based Diageo shutters its Amherstburg factory near Windsor next month, which will cost about 200 jobs.

“Crown Royal should have thought twice before closing their plant here,” the premier told reporters at Queen’s Park on Tuesday, expressing concerns Diageo is moving jobs stateside.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford says he has no plans to provide Toronto with new revenue tools through discussions on the next phase of the new deal between the city and the province.

“Revenue tools are called taxes. They want to tax the pants off you. They’ve taxed us to death in Toronto. Enough, enough of these taxes,” Ford told reporters at Queen’s Park on Tuesday.

“As I say, government doesn’t have an income problem. They have a revenue problem. Stop spending money. Start focusing on areas that you can drive efficiencies.”
