TORONTO — A group of immigrant workers is protesting in Ontario after provincial immigration officials returned their permanent residency applications following nearly two years of processing, leaving many without valid work permits and unable to apply through alternative pathways.

The workers say they applied under a provincial nominee stream that has since been closed.

SCOTUS Signals Willingness To Uphold State Laws Protecting Women’s Sports

A majority of Supreme Court justices appear poised to uphold state laws protecting women’s sports from trans-identifying men.

The high court held oral arguments on Tuesday in Little v. Hecox and West Virginia v. B.P.J., which center around statutes passed by Idaho and West Virginia stipulating that girls’ sports are reserved for females. The justices will address the question of whether the laws violate the 14th Amendment’s equal protection clause, or, in West Virginia’s case, Title IX.

Outsourcing Maccabi decision to AI shames West Midlands Police

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood this afternoon stated that she no longer has confidence in the head of West Midlands Police, after it was revealed that the force used AI in compiling its risk assessment for its handling of a football match between Aston Villa and Maccabi Tel Aviv in November.

Chief Constable Craig Guildford admitted earlier today that AI invented a fictitious game between the Israeli club and West Ham. This hardly helped his case that the decision to ban Maccabi fans in Birmingham was a foregone conclusion in the face of resistance from Muslim lobby groups. It does, however, strengthen allegations that police fabricated their intelligence case. Another question springs to mind, too: why did Britain’s third-largest police force rely on AI in such a contentious piece of decision-making?

WHEN the Pope addressed the Vatican ambassadors accredited to the Holy See his speech ought to have made the headlines of every free newspaper across the Western world.

Perhaps we should be grateful that Leo XIV used the word ‘Orwellian’ because that caught the attention of a few commentators. Otherwise, one of the most important papal contributions to public cultural and political dialogue I have ever read disappeared into the fog of international news.

Imagine for a moment that a delegation of friendly foreign lawmakers has been urgently summoned back home in the middle of an all-expenses-paid visit to Ottawa.

Invited to Canada in the hope of building relationships and nurturing alliances in a hostile world, they’ve fled to avoid angering U.S. President Donald Trump, or to be seen as fraternizing with a territory he claims as the 51st American state.

The insult to Canada and to Canadians would be obvious.

Denmark sends troops to Greenland as talks with US collapse

Denmark and at least three of its European allies are sending troops to Greenland after negotiations in Washington failed to deliver a breakthrough on President Trump’s demands to own the territory.

The hastily convened military deployment, a prelude to a larger exercise called Operation Arctic Endurance, will involve soldiers, naval vessels and aircraft from Denmark, and small numbers of unarmed or lightly armed personnel from Germany, Norway and Sweden.

Norway confirmed that it was sending two officers and Germany, which described the deployment as a “reconnaissance” mission, will send 13 personnel. France, Canada and the Netherlands are among the other Nato allies that may make contributions.

When an individual falls victim to the sunk cost fallacy, the consequences that follow are generally even worse. Maybe it’s an extra few thousand wasted on a rust bucket of a car just to feel like the money invested in it wasn’t for nothing. Maybe it means staying in a bad relationship that ought to have ended years ago. Maybe it’s why – just to pick a totally random example – a columnist will persist with a snoozer of a column because she’s typed out 500 words already. These are emotional, illogical decisions, but humans are emotional, illogical creatures who often have a hard time reversing course when we feel like we’ve already invested a lot of money, time or attention.

ICE agent who shot Renee Good suffered internal bleeding, officials say

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent who fatally shot Renee Good last week in Minneapolis, Jonathan Ross, suffered internal bleeding to the torso following the incident, according to two U.S. officials briefed on his medical condition.

It was unclear how extensive the bleeding was. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed Ross’ injury, but has not yet responded to CBS News’ requests for more information. This story will be updated as we learn more.

Almost one in three Canadians say U.S. might try to invade Canada: poll

OTTAWA – Following the recent U.S. military intervention in Venezuela, a new poll suggests almost a third of Canadians say the United States might attempt “direct action” to take control of Canada.

It suggests one-in-five Americans think the same.

The poll, which was conducted online and can’t be assigned a margin of error, surveyed 1,540 Canadians between Jan. 9 and Jan. 11.

Biden-voting Secret Service agent assigned to VP JD Vance stripped of security clearance after spilling beans to undercover reporter

The U.S. Secret Service has placed an agent assigned to Vice President JD Vance’s protective detail on administrative leave after he allegedly divulged sensitive security secrets to an undercover female reporter.

In footage published on Tuesday by investigative journalist James O’Keefe, USSS agent Tomas Escotto appears to share various specifics regarding Vance’s security detail with the reporter as well as photos revealing the methods used to transport the vice president.
