Ukraine war: ‘When the shelling stops, the traitors will be punished’

A clash of loyalties is dividing opinion among residents in Bakhmut – a town on the front line in eastern Ukraine’s Donbas region.

Sometimes it slips out as a whisper. More often, it is hidden behind euphemisms and shrugs – and carefully ambivalent replies. And then, once in a while, a fiercely pro-Russian sentiment is simply blurted out, like the crack of a gunshot, here in the rolling green hills of the Donbas.

“This is Russian territory. Ukraine is the occupier here,” said a man in overalls, standing with a group of council workers. They had been clearing weeds in Bakhmut – a Ukrainian town currently within easy earshot of Russian artillery.

Elon Musk says he may die ‘under mysterious circumstances’ in cryptic tweet

Elon Musk suggested he might die “under mysterious circumstances” in a cryptic tweet that appeared to be referring to a threat by the chief of Russia’s space agency.

Putin’s regime is ‘mirroring’ the Nazis and he and his acolytes will share the same fate as Hitler, Ben Wallace says in sabre-rattling speech on Russia’s ‘Victory Day’

Vladimir Putin’s regime is ‘mirroring’ the actions of the Nazis and must share the same fate as them, Ben Wallace will say as the Russian leader stages a military parade to celebrate victory in World War II.

Defence Secretary Mr Wallace will use a major speech to say that Putin and his inner circle should share the same fate as the Nazis, who ended up defeated and facing the Nuremberg trials for their atrocities.

His speech, at the National Army Museum in London, will also directly criticise the behaviour of Russian commanders for war crimes and their incompetence in a campaign which has failed to secure the gains expected by Putin.

Putin defends his Ukraine invasion, invoking World War II, but does not signal an escalation.

President Vladimir V. Putin used his Victory Day speech on Monday to try to channel Russian pride in defeating Nazi Germany into support for this year’s invasion of Ukraine. But contrary to some expectations he did not make any new announcements signaling a mass mobilization for the war effort or an escalation of the onslaught.

New Views of Moderation, Resistance and the Holocaust in the Middle East

For the first time in history, a delegation of journalists, academics and influencers from across the Arab and Muslim world — including citizens from states that have not yet signed peace agreements with Israel, such as Saudi Arabia, Syria and Lebanon – came to see first-hand the horrors of the Holocaust and to promote education and awareness of them in their societies.

The delegation was organized by Sharaka, a grassroots organization based in Israel, the UAE, Bahrain, and Morocco, and made up of young social activists from Israel, the Arab Gulf States and others in the region who are dedicated to promoting warm ties and citizen-diplomacy. The group learned about the pre-WWII Jewish community, about the Holocaust, including touring the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp in Poland, and then took part in the International March of the Living, also there, an annual event in which thousands march in memory of the victims of the Holocaust.

‘We tried not to watch’ – escapees recount terror of Russian-occupied Izyum

“We thought those were our last minutes. It was extremely scary but we were lucky.”

Elena is recalling the moment Russian troops started shelling, after she and a group of escapees passed through one of their checkpoints.

After two months living in the basement of a kindergarten in the Russian-occupied town of Izyum in Ukraine, Elena spent two nerve-shredding days on the road to safety. She and her daughter were among 20 people in a convoy of vehicles heading away from Russian-controlled territory. They fled last Friday using a route organised by volunteers.

En Marche! Eid Mubarak, France!

The mass gatherings at the end of Ramadan in Europe were the ummah displaying its takeover in public.

6,000 faithful celebrated the end of Ramadan at the Delaune stadium in Saint-Denis, outside Paris. When the crowd arrived at the stadium, members of the Amal association directed the men to the entrances of the two main courts, behind the grandstand. “The women at the back.”

Even the tennis courts welcomed the devotees. The fences were festooned with green balloons, the color of Islam. The “Allahu Akbar” rang out from the loudspeakers placed in the four corners of the stadium. The same scenes took place in dozens. of other stadiums in France and in small and medium-sized cities: in Garges, Bagneux, Poissy, Créteil, Ivry-sur-Seine, Argenteuil, Athis-Mons, Noisy-Le-Grand …

At the stadium of Mosson of Montpellier, 10,000 faithful in prayer. In Vandœuvre-lès-Nancy, a town of 30,000 inhabitants, 5,000 gathered in prayer at the stadium. Same scenes in Gennevilliers. We would be wrong to think that it is a test of strength for Islam The mayors of these cities showed up at stadiums to nurture their electorate.

Why is Extinction Rebellion protesting against gender-critical feminists?

Eco-warriors seem determined to alienate as many people from their cause as possible.

Following the activities of groups trying to ‘save the planet’ is not an easy task these days. Since the summer of 2018, we have been introduced to Extinction Rebellion (XR), Animal Rebellion, Ocean Rebellion, Money Rebellion, Roads Rebellion, Youth Rebellion (there’s a bit of a theme here), Insulate Britain and the newest kid on the block, Just Stop Oil. XR also has a network of local groups. Some of these amount to little more than a Facebook page, but others, particularly those in certain university cities, are much stronger.

Biden’s bread line crisis?

Anatomy of the American baby formula shortage A president who promised competence was caught flat footed by agency failure, supply chain woes and inflation, and baby parents are now in a panic.

At the outset of his presidency, Joe Biden promised competence by a bigger, better government. A few days ago, one of his loyal allies exposed a gross incompetence by federal officials on Biden’s watch that defied that promise and inflamed a baby formula shortage now panicking parents nationwide.

Inside the battle on the Eastern Front

I was given access to a secret Ukrainian base

Barbed wire knots together sky and earth. Burned-out vehicles, modern-day carcasses of industrial warfare, dot the landscape. The ground is strafed and cratered: Eastern Ukraine has been disembowelled by shelling. The war here is fought with 21st-century drone technology, but it flies over soldiers who carry 50-year-old Kalashnikovs. The black snouts and brown handles of these guns line the eastern front, which is a frieze cast in metal and wood, and is where, in the late afternoon of a warm spring day, I see Jesus.
