How does an authoritarian regime die? As Ernest Hemingway famously said about going broke – gradually then suddenly.

The protesters in Iran and their supporters abroad were hoping that the Islamic regime in Tehran was at the suddenly stage. The signs are, if it is dying, it is still at gradual.

The last two weeks of unrest add up to a big crisis for the regime. Iranian anger and frustration have exploded into the streets before, but the latest explosion comes on top of all the military blows inflicted on Iran in the last two years by the US and Israel.

Doug Ford says he’s ‘100% dead against’ lifting Canadian tariffs on Chinese EVs

As Prime Minister Mark Carney heads to China for talks aimed at boosting trade, Premier Doug Ford is imploring him to keep Canadian tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles.

The Star reported Monday that Carney’s officials are in “active discussions” with Beijing about lowering or dropping the 100 per cent tariffs on Chinese EVs that Canada imposed in 2024.

That’s because the prime minister — who has brought Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe with him on the trade mission — hopes that, in exchange, China will remove its punitive counter-tariffs on Canadian canola and seafood.

Chinese state media urging Canada to cut ties with US during Carney trip

There is no doubt that plastic pollution of the natural world is ubiquitous, and present in the food and drink we consume and the air we breathe. But the health damage potentially caused by microplastics and the chemicals they contain is unclear, and an explosion of research has taken off in this area in recent years.

Less than 40 per cent of CBC’s reporting on the Israel-Hamas conflict was “balanced or neutral,” finds a new study by a Jewish advocacy group.

B’nai Brith Canada also found that more than 50 per cent of CBC’s news articles and videos included in the study met its threshold for pro-Palestinian bias, while less than seven per cent met the threshold for pro-Israel bias. This was based on a sample of 299 items published between Oct. 1, 2024 to April 30, 2025.

Freedom applies in different areas of life, and we know that economic freedom leads to better outcomes including higher income, lower unemployment, reduced poverty, and greater overall wellbeing. So, Albertans should be proud that their province was recently ranked as the economically freest in Canada. Unfortunately, that only puts it in 30th place among the provinces and states of Canada, Mexico, and the U.S.

German church’s televised ‘slime Jesus’ provokes fury on right

A Roman Catholic diocese in Germany has expressed regret over a televised Christmas Eve mass featuring a portrayal of the newborn Christ by an adult woman covered in sticky rice paper that was described by some critics as “slime Jesus”.

The broadcast on ARD television from St Mary’s in Stuttgart showed a manger in which a female performance actor was huddled up in a foetal position and covered with sticky rice paper.

The officiating priest, Thomas Steiger, said during the service: “The nativity scene shows a real human being, lying there miserable, naked and exposed.”

Pro-Nazi social media posts lead to courtroom argument between Calgary teen, judge

A 19-year-old Calgary man who was once placed on a terrorism peace bond for social media posts promoting ISIS and the killing of gay men got into an argument with a judge Monday about his pro-Nazi beliefs.

The teen was caught posting more ISIS videos and pro-Nazi materials, in breach of court-ordered conditions that he stay off social media. He was also caught taking a selfie at a synagogue, also a breach of a court-ordered condition.

This punk doesn’t sound like a Neo-Nazi in my view but it sure reads better to the lying CBC than “Muslim” I bet.

On Wednesday, January 14, 2026, the Bamberg Regional Court will hear the appeal in the criminal case against David Bendels, editor-in-chief and publisher of the Deutschland-Kurier (DK), who was sentenced to seven months’ probation for sharing a satirical meme depicting then–interior minister Nancy Faeser holding a sign reading “I hate freedom of expression.”

The US Has a National Security Strategy. Where’s Canada’s?

On Dec. 5, 2025, the president of the United States announced a new national security strategy. Each successive U.S. administration issues such a document at the beginning of its term, forcing a reassessment of national security at least every four years. It is a foundational exercise for government and for the public.

The release has gone largely unnoticed by Canadian media and officials, save for a few comments from the minister of National Defence. The minister said he was “taking note” of the new U.S. strategy but that Canada would follow its own national security strategy. Many Canadians are left wondering what that strategy actually looks like.
