There is something perverse about a government that once claimed there is “no business case” to sell natural gas to Europe so our allies don’t have to rely on Russia, but whose prime minister is happily going to China to talk energy exports. That energy, by the way, could very well end up powering a Chinese invasion of Taiwan. The Liberal party’s disreputable habit of siding with authoritarian enemies of the West aside, the government’s position on whether there is a “business case” for an energy project has nothing to do with the market, and everything to do with politics.

The story is almost unbelievable: Somalis in Minnesota allegedly set up fraudulent housing services, meal programs, and autism-therapy offerings, which formed part of a “web” that stole “billions of dollars in taxpayer money.” Some fraudulently obtained funds, according to federal law enforcement sources, ended up in the hands of Al-Shabaab terrorists.
Meantime, on the West Coast, another pattern of fraud has taken root: foreign criminals have developed sophisticated schemes to cheat and steal from unsuspecting Americans. I spoke with a veteran blue-city police detective, who has spent two decades investigating serious crimes, in order to learn more about how these groups operate and what might be done to stop them.

Suspect in B.C. double murder arrived on student visa weeks before, Crown prosecutor says
A murder trial has heard that Arnold and Joanne De Jong hosted a “joyful” family celebration at their Abbotsford, B.C., home, on May 8, 2022, with a family member later telling police they were “alive and well” when she left at 10 p.m.
But when family members couldn’t reach them the next day, a son-in-law visited and found Joanne De Jong dead before calling police, who quickly determined they were dealing with a double homicide, Crown prosecutor Dorothy Tsui said.
… Tsui said one of the suspects, Gurkaran Singh, had arrived in Canada on a student visa on April 16, less than a month before the killings.

Nanaimo grocery store locks up meat due to rampant theft

Canadian return trips from U.S. by car decline for 12th straight month: StatCan
The number of Canadians travelling to and from the United States by car was down for the 12th consecutive month, Statistics Canada data shows.
In December, 1.3 million Canadians returned from the U.S. by automobile, a “steep decline” of 30.7 per cent from the same month in 2024, says Statistics Canada data released on Monday.
The data noted that Dec. 28 was the busiest day for road travel at the border, with 73,800 Canadians returning to the country.
