Pilots detail chaotic collapse of the Afghan Air Force

Hours before Kabul fell to the Taliban on Aug. 15, the Afghan Air Force was melting down. Instead of unleashing air attacks against advancing insurgents, some airmen were fighting each other.

At the Kabul airport, some Afghan Air Force personnel guarding the airfield tried to force their way onto a military helicopter preparing to lift off, according to the Afghan Air Force pilot flying the craft and two other people familiar with the incident. The chopper’s destination was across town, but the guardsmen were convinced it was leaving the country and were determined not to be left behind, the pilot told Reuters. Another guard, trying to stop them, pointed his gun at the cockpit.

Prince Andrew’s lawyer seeks to halt US case as accuser ‘lives in Australia’

Prince Andrew’s lawyer has called for the US civil case against the royal over alleged sexual assault to be stopped because his accuser is “actually domiciled in Australia”.

Virginia Giuffre is suing the Queen’s son for allegedly assaulting her when she was a teenager. Andrew strongly denies the allegation.

His lawyer, Andrew B Brettler, said in documents filed in the southern district court of New York on Tuesday that the case should be halted until the “issue of subject matter jurisdiction is adjudicated”.

New COVID-19 cases in US soar to highest levels on record

CHICAGO (AP) — More than a year after the vaccine was rolled out, new cases of COVID-19 in the U.S. have soared to the highest level on record at over 265,000 per day on average, a surge driven largely by the highly contagious omicron variant.

The previous mark was 250,000 cases per day, set in mid-January, according to data kept by Johns Hopkins University.

The fast-spreading mutant version of the virus has cast a pall over Christmas and New Year’s, forcing communities to scale back or call off their festivities just weeks after it seemed as if Americans were about to enjoy an almost normal holiday season. Thousands of flights have been canceled amid staffing shortages blamed on the virus.

China’s disastrous one-child policy is finally starting to kick in

If you’re not familiar with Daniel Greenfield, who writes at FrontPage Magazine and at his own site, I am not exaggerating when I say you’re missing one of the most astute thinkers on the internet.  Most recently, he’s turned his gimlet eye on the terrible effect on China of the one-child policy, when combined with urban affluence and nascent feminism.

I’ve long known that China’s one-child policy, which resulted in the abortion of up to 40 million female babies, was going to have far-reaching consequences.  My assumption was that women would become more valuable and be better treated, but I didn’t realize that their increased value might spell the beginning of the end of the Communist Party.

Over the last two decades, progressives have established a new consensus on crime. Nonviolent felonies like shoplifting and drug possession should be reclassified as misdemeanours. Cities should defund the police and spend the money on nurses, psychologists and social workers instead. The Mankato, Minn. school board has decided that racism is okay after all. The board voted unanimously to pay additional stipends to teachers who aren’t white. They also voted to segregate teachers by race, though they prefer to call it “placing American Indian educators at sites with other American Indian educators and educators of color at sites with other educators of color.”

In the West vs. East battle of entertainment industries, manga, anime and Korean dramas are steadily gaining ground

Be it films or comics, audiences seem to be growing tired of what the Western entertainment industry has to offer and many are turning their attention to the East.

For a long time, Hollywood and the American comic book industry have been seen as international media behemoths. It used to be that they never even faced any serious competition. But lately, they seem to be losing that grasp. The last decade of film and comics has seen a sharp decline in quality. And while, of course, there have been some HUGE successes like Marvel’s MCU films, raking in billions of dollars, nevertheless, it seems evident that audiences are growing tired of the same old formulas being rehashed over and over again.

Since cutting the cable and subbing to a couple of Streaming platforms I have had the chance to watch fare such as “Squid Game” which I enjoyed and also dull witted PC pap like “Designated Survivor.” The latter was so bad I could not finish it.
