Canada, allies must confront China challenge united after two Michaels: Trudeau

 

OTTAWA — Canada owes no debts to its allies, including the United States, for their help in standing up to China and bringing the Meng Wanzhou-two Michaels affair to a close, says Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Canada and the U.S. resolved the nearly three-year standoff with China by holding firm to their shared belief in the “rules-based” international order, and that united approach will be key to confronting the challenges posed by China in the future, Trudeau said in a year-end interview with the Ottawa bureau of The Canadian Press.

Ontario reports 3,453 new COVID-19 cases, 10 more deaths

Among the latest cases, 673 of today’s cases are unvaccinated individuals, 132 are partially vaccinated, 148 have an unknown vaccination status and 2,500 are fully vaccinated.

Note people are having difficulty booking tests leading to speculation that the true count is much higher.

Reduce contacts now or hospitals will be overwhelmed by Omicron, says Tam

Canada’s chief public health officer says this will not be the holiday season Canadians were hoping for, warning people that if they don’t reduce their contacts over the next several weeks, the country’s hospitals will be overwhelmed.

Dr. Theresa Tam told The National’s Andrew Chang on Monday that now is not the time to be gathering in big numbers.

“Even if Omicron happens to be milder than the previous virus variants, because it’s spreading so rapidly … even a small proportion of people winding up in hospital is going to overwhelm our systems.”

Ford created stampede for boosters but failed to have staff to deliver them

… Come Monday, big surprise, booster shots were either difficult or impossible to book. People booking through Toronto Public Health were offered times in February. Ottawa Public Health had no appointments available through its site Monday. A search of Ottawa and Toronto pharmacy web sites revealed some appointments in February and March.

There is a major disconnect between the provincial government’s promise and the public health units’ ability to deliver in the province’s two largest cities.

By the end of November, homicides in Cook County, which includes Chicago, reached 1,000 for the first time since 1994. A 71-year-old Chinese immigrant who came to the United States almost penniless and worked his way to success as a restaurant operator was shot 22 times and killed in broad daylight near his home. A Christmas-light decorator was killed in front of his home; several others, working for a neighborhood nonprofit, were mugged.

The fall season also kicked off a spree of organized looting at high-end city and suburban stores.

The father of the man who made the suicide vests used in the Paris attacks had no answers.

Driss Laachraoui told the court that he had watched, powerless, as his son lost interest in school and embarked on the tragic road that would lead from a local mosque to the Syrian war zone. Najim Laachraoui blew himself up in the suicide attack at Brussels airport in 2016.

The case of the Clain family was even more mysterious.

The insanity of the American and Western world is the great sadness of my old age. It is absolutely clear to me now, with the idiotic and groundless fake panic over “omicron,” which is killing no one, that this is the “crisis” our ruling elites have been waiting for, and they will not let go of it. The disproportion between the enormous and incalculable economic, psychological, educational, cultural, and human damage the COVID measures are causing and the nearly nonexistent benefit they are producing is of no interest to our elites. They know that it is not about health, and they are unreachable by argument and facts addressed to that disproportion.

Biden convened his Summit for Democracy “to renew democracy at home and confront autocracies abroad”. But in the speeches by Biden and Kamala Harris, neither could think of a single foreign autocrat or enemy they wanted to confront. Instead they bashed America.

While China and Russia waged a concerted propaganda campaign against the summit, they need not have worried. Not only did Biden and Kamala refrain from slighting Putin or Xi, but when the Taiwanese delegate displayed a map in which Taiwan was marked in a different color, her feed was cut off and an apologetic message was displayed disavowing Taiwan’s existence.

Mysterious ‘tank’ spotted floating at sea

A mysterious object resembling military hardware has been spotted floating at sea. Indonesian military has acknowledged the bizarre occurrence, yet was unable to intercept the object that floated away.

Photos of the mysterious object emerged on Indonesian social media last week and promptly went viral. According to local media, the pictures were snapped by oil rig workers on the Natuna Sea – a vast, shallow basin in the southernmost portion of the South China Sea and located largely in Indonesia’s territorial waters.

Chinese spies have penetrated Taiwan’s military, case documents reveal

TAIPEI – For more than 20 years, Xie Xizhang presented himself as a Hong Kong businessman on visits to Taiwan. He now stands accused of having another mission: recruiting spies for China.

On one trip in 2006, Xie met a senior retired Taiwanese navy officer, Chang Pei-ning, over a meal, according to official documents accusing the pair of espionage. Chang would become one of Xie’s agents, the documents allege, helping him penetrate Taiwan’s active military leadership as part of a long-running Chinese operation to build a spy ring among serving and retired military officers.

The Taiwanese officers and their families were allegedly lured by Xie’s offers of all-expenses-paid trips abroad, thousands of dollars in cash payments, and gifts such as silk scarves and belts for their wives. In June 2019, counter-espionage officers moved against Xie’s network, launching raids that uncovered further evidence, according to the documents, which were reviewed by Reuters. Now, Chang is facing espionage charges and a warrant has been issued for the arrest of Xie. According to a person familiar with the case, Xie is not in Taiwan.

Special Prosecutor Releases Full Report on Investigation of Soros-Backed Prosecutor in Jussie Smollett Case

The office of Special Prosecutor Dan Webb released its full 60-page “summary report” Monday afternoon of its investigation into the office of Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx over her improper handling of the Jussie Smollett case in 2019.

Smollett was convicted earlier this month on five of six felony counts of disorderly conduct, relating to faking a hate racist and homophobic crime in 2019, blaming it on Trump supporters, and falsely reporting it to the Chicago Police Department.

UK doctor reveals telltale nightly symptom of surging Omicron variant

A noted British doctor is highlighting several symptoms that distinguish the Omicron variant from the common cold and even other strains of COVID-19 — including drenching night sweats.

Dr. Amir Khan, a physician with the UK’s National Health Service, described the distinguishing episodes as “those kind of drenching night sweats where you might have to get up and change your clothes,” the Sun reported.

The other telltale symptoms of Omicron are a scratchy throat as opposed to a sore one, a dry cough, extreme fatigue and mild muscle aches
