Loss of secret data puts navy’s handling of storage devices under investigation — again

Two of Canada’s frontline frigates lost electronic storage devices containing classified and top secret data — including electronic warfare material — according to security inventories conducted over the last two years, CBC News has learned.

The devices — USBs, DVDs and a backup hard drive — went missing despite an apparent tightening of security in the wake of a spy scandal almost a decade ago, and a separate internal 2013 board of inquiry which recommended measures to clean up the navy’s handling of classified data.

In shadow of U.S. protectionism, Canada in heated battle for EV battery manufacturing

Canada is racing to close deals for new plants to produce electric-vehicle batteries amid an increasingly heated North America-wide competition for investment in EV manufacturing.

Government negotiations with at least three companies looking to make major battery-building investments have reached a critical stage, sources familiar with the talks confirmed on Wednesday.

… As auto makers shift from gasoline-fueled cars and light-duty trucks to electric vehicles, Ottawa has promised to capitalize on Canada’s combination of natural resources and manufacturing infrastructure and expertise to be a major EV player. But its efforts are being challenged by U.S. President Joe Biden’s plan to introduce EV purchase rebates of up to $12,500, with a large chunk of that contingent on the vehicles being made in the United States.

Seems a real possibility that Canada’s auto industry will be decimated. Justin’s BFF Biden has repeatedly slapped Canada in the face since taking office. Personally I suspect Biden’s handlers just don’t give a damn about Justin or Canada and Junior knows it.

Trudeau is a petulant little China Fan Boy so I wonder if he’ll attempt a pivot to Beijing in retaliation for US protectionism. Don’t put it past Junior, he really is that ignorant and Canada’s China class will be pulling his strings. There has to be some reason the Liberals have been so reluctant to ban Huawei. Canadians should brace for the biggest surge in food prices in more than decade

… Climate change, extreme weather like the B.C. flooding, labour shortages, food transportation challenges and last but certainly not least — inflation.

Canada’s Food Price Report 2022, out this morning, warns that Canadians can expect to pay even more for food next year.

It forecasts that food prices will surge between 5% and 7% in 2022, the highest predicted increase since the report started 12 years ago. (For perspective, the report’s 2021 forecast was a 3% to 5% increase, which it says proved accurate.)

Conservatives reject Liberals’ compromise deal on Winnipeg virus lab documents over firing of ChiCom scientists

OTTAWA — The Conservatives are rejecting a proposed deal over access to documents related to the firing of two scientists from Canada’s National Microbiology lab, arguing the Liberals’ efforts are too little too late.

Liberal House Leader Mark Holland offered the compromise last week. It called for striking an all-party committee to review the confidential documents, with a panel of judges enlisted to settle any disputes over whether the documents should be made public or kept secret.

Jihadist knife attack prevented by police

French security services have prevented a planned stabbing spree in public places during the Christmas season. Two suspected Islamic State sympathizers, who hoped to knife holiday shoppers and die as martyrs, have been arrested.

Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin confirmed the arrest of two individuals on Wednesday by the General Directorate of Internal Security (DGSI), with a link to a report by the daily Le Parisien.

“The terrorist threat remains at a high level in France, we are not lowering our guard,” Darmanin said.

It threatens to destroy kids’ love of reading.

When I was a kid, the stories had normal plots. You know, an idiot wolf, a girl one fry short of a Happy Meal, a very heroic hero, and a really villainous villain. A couple of days ago I was taking a look at the books the school librarian is currently recommending to some 7- to 11-year-olds, and, if I’m being completely honest, I am pretty sure that the kids would would be better served intellectually if they spent the whole damn day on a Playstation instead of reading that huge mountain of crap.

Why I’m celebrating news that a man is breaking women’s swimming records

Will Thomas is a strapping 22-year-old man who swam competitively at the University of Pennsylvania for three years. This year, though, Will announced that he’s a woman named “Lia” and, thanks to Biden’s executive orders regarding so-called “gender identity,” got a place on UPenn’s women’s swim team where, to no one’s surprise, he swam faster than the women. Frankly, I think it’s wonderful. That’s not because I’ve gone woke; it’s because this is so blatantly unfair to women, and Will is so obviously a man, that Americans are finally saying that the emperor is wearing the wrong dress.

After Catholic fundamentalists prevented Swedish musician Anna von Hausswolff from performing in a church in Nantes on Tuesday, the Paris church Saint-Eustache has cancelled her planned 9 December concert, citing concerns over security.

On Tuesday, a group described by Nantes’ deputy mayor, Bassem Asseh, as “intolerant radicals” blocked the entrance to the church Notre-Dame de Bon-Port ahead of von Hausswolff’s show, accusing her of making “satanist” music, despite the show being organised in accordance with the Nantes diocese.

The protesters sang: “Saint Mary, mother of God, pray for us poor sinners.”

It’s kinda crappy frankly.

The United States is still rich enough to meet higher-order needs and call them entitlements. The decades-long response to race, class and gender proves the point. Americans can fixate on respect, status, self-esteem, hurt feelings and positive recognition because the essentials just happen.

Potable water, traffic lights, microwave ovens and freedom from fear. They are there, like magic. Because all Americans are fed, reasonably policed and more civil than not — this point cannot be overstressed — authorities can sidestep policy basics and empirical findings.

‘It’s a different beast’: US fentanyl deaths will rise, warns Narcan developer

Deaths from fentanyl will continue to rise and overdoses may be increasingly difficult to battle in the US, said Roger Crystal, who helped develop Narcan nasal spray, an easy-to-use medication that reverses overdoses.

The overdose crisis that killed more than 100,000 Americans in one year is “all about fentanyl”, Crystal said – and it’s only going to get worse.

Those who are overdosing from fentanyl have a shorter window of time to be saved and may need additional doses of the medication.

There are worse indiscretions than sex outside of marriage, the leader of the Catholic Church told reporters on the papal plane while en route from Greece to Italy on Monday, Reuters reported.

“Sins of the flesh are not the most serious,” the 84-year-old religious leader said regarding sex outside of marriage. Top transgressions instead include pride and hatred, according to Reuters.
