Canadian politics in 2026: Two fault lines that could alter the landscape

The year-in-review phase is over. It’s time to look ahead.
In Canadian politics, 2025 will be remembered as the year of Trump. In 2026, I regret to predict, very little will change. In my last column, I argued that the U.S. midterms — and President
Donald Trump’s rhetoric in the lead-up — will turn Canada into an increasingly convenient political target, spelling trouble for our economy and particularly for the looming CUSMA renegotiations.
That is a seismic risk. But it is far from the only political story Canadians should be watching in the year ahead.
Somali Immigrant Welfare Scams Uncovered in Minnesota–and Sweden

More than one billion Swedish kronor (€92.4 million) in taxpayer funds intended for preschools and schools have been siphoned off through an Islamist-affiliated welfare fraud network in Sweden. A recent probe found that funds meant to support Sweden’s education system were diverted through a network of independent schools allegedly linked to radical Islamist activity.
The findings followed a police raid on an apartment in Gävle, north of Stockholm, where several individuals connected to a radical and violent Islamist extremist group were staying. Police were searching for Rabie Karam, described as “one of the main actors” in a network of schools accused of recruiting and spreading radical Islam.
Ontario judge reluctantly accedes to ‘very lenient’ sentence for drug dealer who terrorized two women

A recent court decision out of Ontario reveals how judges’ hands are tied when it comes to sentencing hard-core criminals.
Justice Craig Brannagan was sentencing Justin Anderson for repeatedly flashing a handgun at a woman he forcibly confined for a week the spring of 2024 while he travelled through the province selling drugs, and for later terrorizing another woman at gunpoint he believed to be an informant. Both the Crown and defence lawyers in Anderson’s case had recommended he be sentenced to 10 and a half years in prison. The judge dubbed their position “very lenient,” but he went along with it, anyway.
A scientific study written by a MAID lobby group may be attempting to sway policy

A medical assistance in dying (MAID) study exposes how MAID lobby groups may be attempting to influence policy in Canada — through the publication of medical studies.
A study on patients who were forced to transfer out of faith-based hospitals to receive medical assistance in dying (MAID) claims this caused “unnecessary suffering” for those who had to be transfered.
We Still Don’t Know the Enemy: “It is the nature of Islam to dominate, not to be dominated.”

Sun Tzu in The Art of War wrote, “If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat.” This lesson has often been ignored by the West when confronting Islamic jihadism. Religion in general has not been taken seriously by our technocratic, materialist, secularist world view.
The dark comedy of the Islamo-left alliance

The 7 October 2023 pogrom in southern Israel, when several thousand Hamas militants set out to kill and rape as many Jews as possible, seemed to energise bourgeois leftists across the West. They seemed thrilled by what they eagerly portrayed as an act of ‘resistance’. Excited by what they conceived as a righteous uprising by Palestinians against ‘settler-colonial’ Israelis. Charged by what they painted as a radical blow against an outpost of Western imperialism.
It proved to be a pivotal moment. The left had long flirted with anti-Semitic Islamists and other Islamic activists, but 7 October truly solidified it. Since then, this grim Islamo-leftist coupling has become a prominent feature of the Western political landscape.

Understanding the battle for America’s soul

FOR A long time, and certainly fully exposed since 2016, there has been a clash of two totally opposing understandings of the world. These two forces are globalism and populism, and they are more important and more divided than left and right. Each is more dominant on one of the traditional sides of politics than the other, but each also crosses those old left-right lines and in some ways make them obsolete.
If Those Who Pushed the Covid Vaccines Go to Trial, This Book Should be Exhibit A for the Prosecution

I was sceptical about COVID-19 from the start. I was in Wuhan when it started (something I only realised in retrospect) and one year into the ‘pandemic’ not a single colleague or friend there had contracted it. I also knew that people were not dropping dead in the streets.
I was not in denial about the existence of a novel virus (to which I eventually succumbed), but I was unconvinced that it posed the existential threat that was presented in the media. After all, I was in Hong Kong when SARS kicked off in 2003 and made regular visits during that ‘pandemic’. The outcome of SARS never matched the hysterical hype that accompanied it.
Nearly five million visas were set to expire in 2025. Where are the visa holders now?

As 2025 began, federal records showed that there were 4.9 million visas set to expire in the coming 12 months, with Conservatives pressing the Liberal government on how it would deal with those who didn’t leave willingly.
“The vast majority leave voluntarily, and that’s what’s expected,” was the official committee testimony of then Immigration Minister Marc Miller.

New Year’s Eve Sees Unprecedented Destruction and Rioting Across Europe

Exceptional levels of violence swept through Europe on New Year’s Eve, stretching the resources of law enforcement and emergency services in many major cities.
In Brussels, emergency crews were called to large numbers of outdoor fires and vehicle set ablaze, many of them linked to fireworks. Firearms were also spotted in the streets. One video on X shows hooded individuals, apparently Moroccans, carrying AKs while riding a scooter in the Belgian capital.
Somewhere in this scene from Berlin lives a 89 year old Woman who’s lived there all her life, all of a sudden one day, she looks out her her window, and watches her and her neighbours homes, be bombed by hundreds of Muslims launching fireworks at them.

QUESNEL: The price of ‘mushy nationalism’ — why Canada needs a stronger citizenship standard in the age of diaspora power

Canada must act to stop a future referendum, but it’s not the one in Alberta or Quebec. A referendum campaign organized by Sikhs for Justice, a pro-Khalistani group, has been taking place with little notice from most Canadians. Recently, over 53,000 Canadian Sikhs from Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, and Quebec voted in Ottawa during the latest phase of the Khalistan Referendum, forming lines stretching nearly two kilometres.

Federal government won’t say whether it will criminalize residential school denials

The federal government is not revealing whether it will act on calls to pass a law that would criminalize denying that Indigenous children suffered abuses in Canada’s residential school system.
The issue has bubbled in the background of Canadian politics for several years and gained prominence after several First Nations announced they had located potential unmarked graves at former school sites.
