If Trudeau loses next week, I sincerely hope it marks the beginning of the end for wokeness

Commander-in-Chief of Woke Justin Trudeau could be removed as prime minister when Canadians go to the polls on Monday. And there would be few tears from me for a man who has taken political correctness to a laughable new level.

The funny thing is, Trudeau has brought his potential downfall on himself. He called the snap election last month, when he did not have to do so. Canadians were not due to go to the polls until 2023, but he thought that he could catch his opponents off guard and ride to victory.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has imposed a no-fly zone for unmanned aircraft systems flying over a south Texas bridge after photos emerged showing thousands of illegal immigrants accumulating under it in recent days.

Images captured by The Epoch Times this week showed thousands of illegal immigrants congregating under the Del Rio Bridge in south Texas as they waited to be processed by Border Patrol.

Some 9,000 illegal immigrants, including Haitian, Cuban, and Venezuelan nationals, were in the area, Val Verde County Sheriff Joe Frank Martinez confirmed.

Dubbed AUKUS, the agreement seeks to “deepen diplomatic, security, and defense cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region,” according to a statement by the White House.

Three officials, representing Canada’s foreign affairs, intelligence and defence departments, told The Globe and Mail that Ottawa was not consulted about the pact, and had no idea the trilateral security announcement was coming until it was made on Wednesday by U.S. President Joe Biden, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison.

Voters are heading into Election Day more angry and apathetic about going to the polls than they were at the start of the campaign, a new poll suggests, making the result more uncertain than ever before.

The Ipsos poll conducted exclusively for Global News found more than two-thirds of voters surveyed — 69 per cent — feel the election should not have been called in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. A glimmer of hope in Venezuela

The news in our country and abroad has been relentlessly bad ever since we entered the calamitous Biden Era just months ago, but there are a few hopeful signs out there still.

One of the best is a story receiving almost no coverage in the larger press: the Venezuela elections this November. The democratic opposition has agreed to participate after years of boycotting the Maduro regime’s rigged voting. The EU will send a large team of election monitors and Maduro has already been releasing some political prisoners in a bid to end sanctions. Some are even predicting Maduro would be willing to retire from office at the end of his current term in 2024.

Get back to me when Maduro is toppled.

It was clear to many of us tracking these developments that since the Seventies, foundational skills and knowledge had been slowly eroded, their place taken by politics and dubious theory. Back then, the danger seemed confined to the elite groves of postgraduate education. As a consequence, liberal education, the “free play of the mind on all subjects,” as Matthew Arnold put it, and “the instinct to know the best that is known and thought in the world,” was being replaced by the “boots are better than Shakespeare” philistinism of political activism, and the “higher nonsense” of postmodern theory.

Proverbially, the Devil has all the best tunes. Does he have the best books too? Apparently so, at least where soft porn is concerned: last week, it was reported that Xavier Nobell, a prominent Catholic exorcist and bishop, has resigned from the Church in order to be with his lover, a writer of “erotic-satanic” fiction.

The whole story evoked The Exorcist, which came out a few years before I was born and was considered the ne plus ultra of shocking content into my tween years in the nineties. But even setting aside the fact that the other “side” seems to have won, Nobell’s story evoked less shock than nostalgia.

Where’s the outrage over a mainstream broadcaster giving a platform to a former follower of a fascistic death cult? That happened today, on Good Morning Britain, when Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley had an early morning chat with Shamima Begum, the young British woman who ran off to join ISIS in 2015 and who stayed with it as it enslaved Yazidi women, slaughtered Christians, executed homosexuals and instigated acts of barbarism against men, women and children in Paris, Barcelona, Manchester and elsewhere in Europe. The No Platform lobby has been strangely silent. No writing to Ofcom, no Twitterstorm, no cries of ‘How dare you give this vile supremacist the oxygen of publicity!?’. An actual one-time extremist hits our TV screens and it’s tumbleweed from the self-styled protectors of the public from the toxins of dangerous ideologies.

Budapest and Paris: The Contrast Between Civilization and Barbarism

Pope Francis went recently to Hungary for a few hours to preach the eternal sacred truths of political correctness. Of course, these truths may change in time, indeed they are certain to do so, but their sacrosanctity will remain. After all, the sacred must move with the times.

I also went to Hungary recently for a short trip, rather longer than that of the Pope, the shortness of whose visit was widely interpreted as political disapproval. I went to Hungary from, and returned to, Paris rather than Rome. I must say that, superficially, Paris seems a far more authoritarian place than Budapest. For example, there is more political propaganda within a short distance of my flat in Paris, extolling the virtues of official, and one might almost say militant, laicity, than I saw in Hungary.

In his 2015 documentary Bitter Lake, the filmmaker Adam Curtis observes that Afghanistan’s opium poppies grow in a “wonderland of vegetation and power”. Amid the conspiratorial hyperbole that characterises much of his work, it is a striking phrase — but also a perceptive one. The poppy is integral to modern Afghanistan because of its relationship to both vegetation (and the communities it sustains) and the exercise of raw power: two of the main forces which drive Afghan politics.

Understand this imperishable fact and it becomes clear how the country fell so quickly to the Taliban over recent weeks.

The Delusions of the Ruling Class – It was Trump Derangement Syndrome, not Trump, that posed the greatest threat to the country.

The ruling class treated the Trump presidency as a singular crisis in the history of the country. From the constant shrieking of the media, one might have thought that America had fallen into the hands of a foreign occupier. Because the ruling class viewed Trump as illegitimate from the start, it cast almost all of his executive actions, no matter how prosaic, as deeply scandalous and troubling. The media ginned up endless controversies about Trump, but they never amounted to much. Most of them revolved around Trump’s infractions of taste or his deviations from this or that unimportant Beltway “norm.”
