Ottawa still pledging to double construction pace despite home building headwinds

OTTAWA – The federal Liberal government is sticking to its pledge to double the pace of home building even as headwinds buffet the construction industry.

Prime Minister Mark Carney promised in his 2025 election platform to make investments that would double the pace of housing construction over the next decade to drive down the costs of rent and home ownership.

Hateful liars.

No ‘down payment’ on USMCA. Here’s what to offer instead

No ‘down payment’ on USMCA. Here’s what to offer instead

A report that Washington wanted a “down payment” from Canada just to begin talks on extending the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) provoked a wide Canadian consensus that we should refuse to pay for the “privilege” of sitting at the table. That instinct is right. But refusal is not a strategy. If Canada wants to protect its interests, it needs to show up with a clear plan. Here, I propose one built around an underappreciated truth in Washington.

We are about to have the door slammed in our face.

Justice is coming for victims of dangerous illegal-migrant truckers

Justice is coming for victims of dangerous illegal-migrant truckers

A facet of the trucking industry little known to the general public has had a big impact on highway safety — and last week a US Supreme Court ruling ensured that it will have to take responsibility for the rigs it helps send out on the road.

That means innocent Americans who have been maimed or killed in big-rig crashes caused by negligent truck drivers may finally pursue justice.

And freight brokers that chase profits by contracting with unsafe trucking carriers — particularly those that hire unvetted illegal-immigrant drivers — will have to rethink their business practices.

New book alleges ‘fraud, tax evasion and culture of deception’ at ‘green’ EU & Canadian EV Battery darling Northvolt

A new book by award-winning Swedish investigative journalist Gunnar Lindstedt alleges there was a culture of deception, financial mismanagement and regulatory failure at the heart of the bankrupt Swedish battery giant Northvolt.

Released yesterday, The Northvolt Case (Northvoltfallet) reveals that Sweden’s Economic Crime Authority (Ekobrottsmyndigheten) has quietly opened a formal investigation into the company for alleged tax evasion, accounting fraud and even potential fraud by deception (svindleri). These are allegations that, if proven, could implicate not just the company’s leadership but its auditors and board members as well.

UK companies linked to payments for small boat crossings, BBC finds

People smugglers are directing migrants to pay for illegal Channel crossings using a network of UK-registered businesses, a BBC investigation has found.

We secretly filmed staff at a shop in south-east London telling an undercover researcher that nearly £3,000 in cash could be deposited with them and sent to a smuggler in France.

“You put your money here. If your friends reach [the UK], you shouldn’t come back,” we were told at the mobile phone store in Woolwich.

What a massive racket. England and France are actively working toward their own erasure.

Who is Jamil Jivani — and why you should be paying attention to him

OTTAWA — Aside from being a member of Parliament, Jamil Jivani has no official roles in Pierre Poilievre’s Conservative party.

Elected to the House of Commons in a 2024 byelection, he possesses less political experience than most of his caucus colleagues.

Yet no one in his party has had more success in pushing themselves to the forefront of a series of defining debates than the Bowmanville—Oshawa North MP.

Thousands gather in Washington DC for daylong America-themed prayer rally

Thousands gather in Washington DC for daylong America-themed prayer rally

Thousands of people streamed on to the National Mall for a daylong prayer rally on Sunday billed as a “rededication of our country as One Nation Under God”.

Against the backdrop of the Washington Monument, worship music blared from a stage that made clear the event’s Christian focus. Arched stained-glass windows, set underneath grand columns resembling a federal building, depicted the nation’s founders alongside a white cross.

“America is done with God, and God is not done with America,” said Pastor Samuel Rodriguez.

The White House-backed event has drawn broad criticism for blurring the lines between church and state, as prominent Republican officials appeared to speak alongside a slate of mostly evangelical speakers.

It upset the Guardian, that’s always a good thing.

Pentagon Suspends 86-Year-Old Canada-US Defense Board, Citing Ottawa’s Failure to Meet Commitments, in Direct Rebuke of Carney’s Davos Speech

WASHINGTON – On Monday morning, the Pentagon’s senior defense strategist suspended the oldest bilateral defense institution in North American history and pointed the announcement at Mark Carney’s Davos speech — a four-month-old address the Canadian prime minister’s admirers had called Churchillian, and that Washington now treats as a case study in the gap between rhetoric and reality.

Political executions surge in Iran since start of war

The line is crackly. But the voice of Mehrab Abdollahzadeh is clear and, given the circumstances, surprisingly steady.

He’s on death row in western Iran. He speaks quickly – as if time is running out. And his message is desperate.

“You are hearing my voice from Oromiyeh Central Prison, and this may be the last time you hear it,” he says in a voice note obtained by the Kurdistan Human Rights Network.

Here’s why best before dates are costing Canadians billions in avoidable food waste

Here’s why best before dates are costing Canadians billions in avoidable food waste

Confusion over best before dates is causing billions of dollars-worth of safe, edible food to be wasted every year in Canada, according to a recent report.

The report from food rescue organization Second Harvest shows $12.3 billion worth of food doesn’t make it to the grocery store shelves or is pulled prematurely due to “arbitrary best before dates.”

“Nobody produces food or makes food or buys food to throw it away, so let’s stop doing that,” said Second Harvest CEO Lori Nikkel.
