United Nations faces ‘imminent financial collapse’ without urgent action, UN chief says

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The United Nations chief is warning that the world body faces “imminent financial collapse” unless its financial rules are overhauled or all 193 member nations pay their dues — a message likely directed at the United States and the billions it owes.

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a letter to all U.N. member nations obtained Friday by The Associated Press that cash for its regular operating budget could run out by July, which could dramatically affect its operations.

Oklahoma will test incoming teachers from New York & California with ‘America-first’ exam

Teachers from New York and California who apply to teach in Oklahoma will now have to answer questions meant to screen out “woke indoctrinators” with left-wing views — the latest attempt by Oklahoma officials to push the state’s education system rightward.

The test’s 50 questions will cover topics about U.S. government, religion and gender, according to examples shared by the office of Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters (R). Teachers unions have criticized the move as a political stunt that will discourage applicants as Oklahoma faces a teacher shortage.

Nate Silver: The Liberal-Conservative Happiness Gap is Real

We’ve talked about this topic before but as Nate Silver points out today, it probably gets less attention than it should. Let’s just start with the chart so you can refer back to it. As the legend indicates, this is a 0-100 point scale where 100 is “excellent” and 0 is “poor.” As you can see, conservatives are significantly happier than liberals in every subcategory of gender, race, age and education.

BREAKING: Manhattan Jury Finds Daniel Penny Not Guilty

Democratic Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced the charges against Daniel Penny on June 28, 2023. Penny faced as many as 15 years behind bars. The veteran and architecture student pleaded not guilty.

BREAKING: Jordan Neely’s father says system is ‘rigged’, BLM leader calls for ‘black vigilante’ action as protests erupt after Daniel Penny not guilty verdict

“What we preach is unity, black unity. Stop begging this system to justify our lives,” Newsome said. Stop begging this system for justice. When things happen to you, you step up and defend yourself. Just like everybody else seeks justice on their own, just like everybody else has vigilantes, we need some black vigilantes. People want to jump up and choke us, and kill us for being loud? How about we do the same when they attempt to oppress us.”

The secretive private school upending America’s most liberal city: ‘We don’t talk about pronouns here’

In ultra-progressive San Francisco, parents increasingly seek something a little more traditional for their kids.

That’s the message from the growing enrollments at Donum Dei Classical Academy and other religious schools in the liberal California city.

These private Christian schools weave tradition, faith, and conservative values into the curriculum.

Some were founded by Republican fans of president-elect Donald Trump and want Christianity to play a major role in American life.

For the parents who use them — this means no ‘woke’ books on library shelves and no talk of gender identity in classrooms.

The popularity of the schools, though a worry for some, suggests a backlash against Golden State progressivism.

Crabs, cockatoos and ringtail possums: the wild things thriving in our cities

From bees to burrowing owls, many species are adapting to urban environments and, with a little extra help from us, more could follow suit

In Sapzurro bay on the Colombia-Panama border, the blue land crab can be found scuttling around human infrastructure, burrowing in the nooks and crannies of the coastal settlement. The species, which can grow up to 15cm and ranges in colour from violet to bright cerulean blue, is considered critically endangered or vulnerable in this region, although it can be classed as invasive elsewhere. It traditionally lived in the region’s rich mangrove forests, many of which have now been urbanised – habitat loss that scientists have blamed for the crab’s decline.

I needed a good news story.

Any man dressed ‘like a heterosexual male’ will be entitled to a free draught beer, according to a Facebook post from the bar.

Dog rehomed at last after nine years in shelter

Most rescue dogs spend only a few weeks in a rescue centre before they are adopted. But Humbug spent nearly a decade at Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary before finding his “for ever home”, becoming its longest-staying resident — and perhaps the longest of any sanctuary in the country.

The Akita cross was born at Bleakholt in Edenfield, Lancashire, in 2014 and was soon rehomed alongside his siblings. But Humbug was scared of strangers and returned at eight months old.
