Ottawa closes special Afghan immigration program to new applicants

Less than halfway to its goal of bringing 40,000 Afghans to Canada, the federal government is no longer taking new referrals for the special immigration program meant to prioritize former employees of the Armed Forces or Canadian government and their families.

CBC News has learned the government is processing the last of the 18,000 applications filled out by Afghans hoping to come here through the program. Advocates for refugees say the decision to wind down the program abandons Afghans desperate to come to this country.

Did anyone ever believe the numbers thrown round by the Trudeau government? 40K? 18K? I doubt both numbers. It’s hard to believe that many Afghans even with the inclusion of extended family ever “worked” for Canada.

If someone did work directly for Canada then we have to honor the agreement but not for their 40th cousin 17 times removed. This program sounds like it was deliberately built for abuse.

SAS killings: How a scandal was uncovered

Panorama has revealed disturbing evidence of war crimes by the SAS in Afghanistan – and of subsequent attempts to cover them up. Hannah O’Grady describes how a series of alleged murders of civilians was finally brought to light.

Getting to the bottom of this story involved four years of painstaking detective work.

Crucial to this was a cache of internal emails from within the headquarters of UK Special Forces (UKSF) – the military directorate that oversees the SAS. These contained a handful of details about previously classified deadly raids that senior UKSF officers had considered suspicious back in 2011. At the time, British troops were still fighting the Taliban alongside allies in Afghanistan.

‘We respect women a lot’: Taliban holds 3,000-delegate men-only summit

Men will represent women at a 3,000-delegate all-male gathering on Afghanistan’s future, a senior Taliban figure has said.

The meeting in Kabul on Thursday is the first major gathering of Islamic clerics and tribal elders since the Taliban seized power last August.

Critics and civil society groups said it will not have legitimacy if Afghan women, who number around 20 million, do not attend.

Afghan earthquake: At least 920 people killed and 600 wounded, officials say

A powerful earthquake has killed at least 920 people and left hundreds more injured in Afghanistan, Taliban officials say.

Pictures show landslides and ruined mud-built homes in eastern Paktika province, where rescuers are scrambling to treat the injured.

In remote areas, helicopters have been ferrying victims to hospitals.

Taliban leader Hibatullah Akhundzada said hundreds of houses were destroyed and the death toll was likely to rise.

I’m certain all Muslim nations will be sending aid immediately.

Inside the Taliban’s new drugs hell

The country’s heroin reaches all corners of the world, but it is inside Afghanistan itself that a catastrophe of addiction is unfolding

The dark sea of huddled forms is almost impossible to take in at first.

The grimy, bent figures resemble residents of some vast, squalid dungeon. In the filthy riverbed nearby, scattered lifeless figures look like the aftermath of a battle, or an air crash.

There are close to 1,000 drug addicts sheltering under this bridge in a western neighbourhood of the Afghan capital.

U.S. Spent Over $21 Billion on Afghan Police, Got ‘Barely Qualified Mall Guards’

New SIGAR findings shine a light on America’s dysfunctional efforts to train the Afghan National Police, which “actually contributed to increasing criminality” in Afghanistan.

After spending over $21 billion trying to train a national police force in Afghanistan, the United States splurged on equipment rather than focusing on institutional reform and churned out police trainees who were effectively “barely qualified mall guards,” per an international observer. That’s according to a sprawling new report published by the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) that examines what went wrong in America’s costly and ineffective management of the Afghan National Police (ANP).

Afghanistan: Policing faces, bodies and beards on Kabul streets

In their long white gowns, the inspectors of the Taliban’s Ministry for the Prevention of Vice and Promotion of Virtue look more like food safety inspectors than “moral police”.

But they’re at the forefront of attempts to mould a new, more “Islamic” identity in Afghanistan, in keeping with the group’s hard-line views.

Their role seems broad. During their last visit to a multi-storey shopping centre in Kabul a few months back, shopkeepers remembered the inspectors checking whether products were past their expiry date, as well as instructing them to remove posters featuring women’s bodies.

US withdrawal triggered catastrophic defeat of Afghan forces, damning watchdog report finds

Afghan armed forces collapsed last year because they had been made dependent on US support that was abruptly withdrawn in the face of a Taliban offensive, according to a scathing assessment by a US government watchdog.

A report by the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (Sigar) on the catastrophic defeat that led to the fall of Kabul on 15 August, blamed the administrations of Donald Trump and Joe Biden as well as the Afghan government of Ashraf Ghani.

“Sigar found that the single most important factor in the Afghan National Defence and Security Forces’ (ANDSF) collapse in August 2021 was the decision by two US presidents to withdraw US military and contractors from Afghanistan, while Afghan forces remained unable to sustain themselves,” said the congressionally mandated report, which was released on Wednesday.

Cheezus you have 20 years of lies to blame though personally I place the entire responsibility on the shoulders of Malala.

Kinder Gentler Taliban order Afghanistan’s female TV presenters must cover their faces

The Taliban have ordered female Afghan TV presenters to cover their faces while on air.

Media outlets were told of the decree on Wednesday, a religious police spokesman told BBC Pashto.

The ruling comes two weeks after all women were ordered to wear a face veil in public, or face punishment.

Restrictions on women are being tightened – they are banned from travelling without male relatives and secondary schools are shut for girls.

Can’t they just rub Malala’s head and make it all go away?

How the Taliban are ‘eliminating women’ in Afghanistan

If there was any hope that the Taliban would pay heed to repeated calls from Afghanistan’s civil society and the international community to uphold women’s rights, the Islamic fundamentalist group’s latest decree for women to cover their faces in public has dashed it.

The latest order to make veil compulsory is one of the harshest controls on women’s lives in Afghanistan since the Taliban seized power in August last year. It is also reminiscent of the Islamist outfit’s strict Shariah-based rule in the late 1990s.

20 years of blood and treasure.

Kinder Gentler Pro-Feminist Taliban Forcing Women To Wear Stinking Burka

Afghan women will have to wear the Islamic face veil for the first time in decades under a decree passed by the country’s ruling Taliban militants.

Any woman who refuses to comply and ignores official warnings to male members of her family could see a male guardian jailed for three days.

The Taliban enforced the all-encompassing burka during their first stint in power in the 1990s.

But they had not enforced it in Afghan cities since taking over last year.

I’ve lost count of the number of articles touting this kinder gentler Taliban since Biden handed back Afghanistan.

Source Inside the Federal Government Reveals Suspected and Known Terrorists Walk Freely in the United States Following Biden Administration’s Pullout in Afghanistan

According to records obtained and published by Project Veritas, numerous violent refugees, previously flagged by DHS for a wide range of offenses the agency describes as terrorism, are living in the United States.

Project Veritas independently confirmed and verified the records of some of these individuals, but according to the Federal Government source, there are numerous such cases. Project Veritas published redacted government records of some of these suspected terrorists who are living throughout the United States, including Washington D.C.

How Obama and Biden Destroyed the Greatest Military the World Has Ever Seen

Joseph R. Biden is directly responsible for the worst, most humiliating, most dangerous – yet completely avoidable – defeat in the history of American warfare. He has betrayed the country that elected him and that he is sworn to serve. Yet Biden has shown no remorse and taken no responsibility for the damage he has done. Instead, he has brazenly lied and called his own disaster a “success.”

Biden Sends Nearly $1 Billion to Afghanistan Since Taliban Takeover

The Taliban’s greatest asset isn’t opium. It’s our foreign aid.

Over two decades the United States and its international partners poured billions in humanitarian aid into Afghanistan. Much of that aid went into the pockets of the Taliban.

After Biden’s retreat, the Taliban have consolidated control over Afghanistan. And over all the hungry children, the girls deprived of an education, and all the other sob stories that kept a river of private charity and taxpayer money flowing into a hellhole in which nothing ever got better.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

With eye to China investment, Taliban now preserve Buddhas

MES AYNAK, Afghanistan (AP) — The ancient Buddha statues sit in serene meditation in the caves carved into the russet cliffs of rural Afghanistan. Hundreds of meters below lies what is believed to be the world’s largest deposit of copper.

Afghanistan’s Taliban rulers are pinning their hopes on Beijing to turn that rich vein into revenue to salvage the cash-starved country amid crippling international sanctions.

The fighters standing guard by the rocky hillside may once have considered destroying the terracotta Buddhas. Two decades ago when the Islamic hard-line Taliban were first in power, they sparked world outrage by blowing up gigantic Buddha statues in another part of the country, calling them pagan symbols that must be purged.

Say what? China plans to destroy an ancient Buddhist city to get the copper buried there
