Batshit Crazy Eco-Luddites

There are plenty of irritating things about the new eco-militant movement, whether it is the Greta Thunberg faction, Extinction Rebellion, Insulate Britain, Just Stop Oil, or whatever new group may have sprung up in the meantime.

For a start, there is the aggressive hyper-moralism and absolutism, which often lends itself to bizarre conclusions. (Just the other day, a veteran Extinction Rebellion activist called for a purge of ‘rich Boomers’, in revenge for climate change.) Then, there is the excessive and unwarranted self-confidence. There is the eagerness to disrupt other people’s lives, and to force their own pet obsessions on everyone else. There is the knee-jerk anti-capitalism, which is particularly absurd given the terrible environmental track record of non-capitalist economies. There is the general cultishness of the movement, and the complete inability and/or unwillingness to comprehend competing viewpoints.

Seventy people were arrested during a spate of Extinction Rebellion protests across London.

Six people, including two Olympic athletes, were detained for scaling and gluing themselves to an oil tanker near Hyde Park on Saturday, police said.

Dozens more were arrested at Marble Arch as demonstrators climbed the structure to attach a green banner reading “end fossil fuels now”.

Protesters also blocked the road and surrounded a car.

These eco-zealots don’t care if they’re making our lives more difficult.

These are serious times in which we live. War is raging in Ukraine. The global energy market is now in turmoil. And here in the UK, we are now in the grip of an unprecedented cost-of-living crisis, with inflation rising, household bills set to leap by over 50 per cent, and wages stagnant. Millions of people are worried about the fundamentals. About keeping the roof over their heads. About getting food on the table.

And yet the UK’s resident eco-prats – Extinction Rebellion and Just Stop Oil – clearly think nothing of any of this.

Radical environmental group calls on activists to DEFLATE tires of SUVs in ‘wealthy areas’ to combat climate change

A environmental group is suggesting to its followers that they let the air out of the tires of SUV’s in an attempt to combat climate change.

The group known as Adbusters, which describes itself as ‘a global network of artists, activists, writers, pranksters, students, educators and entrepreneurs who want to advance the new social activist movement of the information age,’ tweeted instructions explaining step-by-step how to deflate the wheels of the gas-guzzling vehicles.

To say that Just Stop Oil – the latest offshoot of the Extinction Rebellion cult – is ‘out of touch’ is more than an understatement. Even to say that these activists live in a ‘parallel universe’ doesn’t capture the vast chasm between their eco-extremist view of the world and the reality that ordinary people have to live in.

I don’t just mean they are ‘out of touch’ in class terms – though there is that. I’d wager that young ‘Louis, Maddie and Kai’, as profiled glowingly in the Guardian, have never had to worry about struggling to pay a heating bill. And, certainly, it takes a steely indifference to ordinary folk to set out to make their lives more difficult today of all days.

Environmental activists have claimed to have deflated the tyres on nearly 2,000 SUVs in the space of four weeks as police launch an operation to find the culprits.

The Tyre Extinguishers said action has been taken in cities across the country in a bid to “make it impossible” to own an SUV in urban areas.
