Where’s the pandemic exit strategy?

Ontario’s new reopening roadmap has no projected end for mask mandates or vaccine passports. In Alberta, Premier Jason Kenney has not said anything more specific than “soon” when asked how long he plans to keep vaccine passports and mask mandates in place. True North’s Andrew Lawton says it’s clear there’s no exit strategy for pandemic restrictions in most of Canada, which is bad news for those of us unwilling to adopt the new normal.

Nearly 60 per cent of Canadians find it difficult to feed their families, poll finds

A new poll has found that nearly 60 per cent of Canadians are having a hard time providing enough food for their families.

The poll from the Angus Reid Institute, released on Friday, shows that 57 per cent of Canadians reported having a difficult time feeding their family recently, an increase from 36 per cent when the question was last asked in 2019.

Inflation plays a role in this figure, the report indicates, as Canadians are dealing with the highest level of inflation in 30 years.

Statistics Canada reported Wednesday that grocery prices increased by 5.7 per cent, the biggest annual gain since 2011.

The increase in the inflation rate was in line with expectations. For comparison purposes, the United States currently has an inflation rate of seven per cent, its highest since 1982.

OTTAWA — Newly released documents show the Finance Department last year warned that the pace of price increases could gain speed, even as the Liberal government and central bank maintained that inflationary pressures were temporary.

In a briefing note to Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland from the spring, officials outlined “the case for runaway inflation” as part of a larger review of consumer prices.

Solar-powered homes, electric tractors and hydrogen-cell trucking fleets: Canada has big net-zero ambitions, but getting there will require trillions of dollars in investment and will likely fuel hotter inflation for years to come, economists said.

One way or another, he’s going to wreck the economy.
