Ontario has entered the sixth COVID-19 wave, doctors say

After more than two years fighting COVID-19, some medical experts in Ontario say the province has entered a sixth wave.

“There are more cases now than there were a week ago and two weeks ago,” infectious disease expert Dr. Isaac Bogoch said Tuesday.

“We can call this a wave. We just don’t know the size of the wave. But it’s here.”

Data on excess deaths show that countries that locked down hard fared no better than those that didn’t.

Throughout the pandemic, the media have eagerly compared Covid statistics between different countries. But such comparisons are often deceptive.

Take, for example, the use of Covid case counts. These depend not only on the number of people infected but also on the amount of testing performed. While useful for evaluating whether cases are increasing or decreasing within a particular country, they are deceptive when comparing countries. If we truly wanted to know, it would be easy, through random seroprevalence surveys that measure the proportion of people with antibodies. But not all governments have been eager to conduct these surveys, while some scientists have even got into trouble for doing them.

The way British Columbia ended their mask mandate was the best. It was a Thursday morning a couple of weeks ago and they announced that the mandate would end the very next day – in fact, a minute beyond midnight that very evening.

It didn’t give people a lot of time to react and certainly no time to lobby for its reversal. The band-aid was ripped off real quick.

In the country-by-country data, the divergences grow even bigger. Perhaps most striking, given both self-flagellating American narratives about the pandemic and current events elsewhere on the globe, is that the worst-hit large country in the world was not the U.S.
