California’s Looming Crime Catastrophe

Recent legislation makes it easier for felons to claim racial bias—potentially putting them back on the streets in large numbers.

On July 13, 2020, gunfire broke out between two cars in the Bay Area town of Antioch, California. One of the cars’ occupants, Daunzhay Young, was hit during the fusillade and was rushed to the hospital. Young survived—this time.

Oakland’s gang wars were radiating outward, including to this once-bucolic city northeast of Oakland. Young was a member of Oakland’s Case gang. A month later, another Case gangbanger was shot while sitting in a car in Oakland. He died the next day. On August 27, 2020, a third Case member was shot in Oakland; three guns were collected at the scene. Case’s archenemy, the ENT gang—named for three dead homies—was on a roll.

Canada to launch ‘national action plan’ to fight auto theft

The federal government is launching what it calls its “national action plan” to combat auto thefts, which will include stronger penalties for thieves, and increased information sharing between police agencies, government officials and border enforcement.

Several cabinet members announced the plan during a Monday morning news conference in Brampton, Ont.

The announcement comes on the heels of the national auto theft summit held in February in Ottawa. According to 2022 industry estimates released at the time, rates of auto theft had spiked in several provinces compared to the year before. In Quebec, thefts rose by 50 per cent. In Ontario, they were up 34.5 per cent.

Chicago mom left waiting hours for help after 911 call for home invasion: ‘We have no units to send you’

A Chicago mom who called 911 during a terrifying break-in was left on her own for hours — with dispatchers telling her to call her local representative to demand more police funding.

Michelle called the emergency hotline six times after coming face-to-face with two masked bandits, only for the strained supervisor to tell her the city’s severe budget cuts had left them with a bare-bones staff.

“A gentleman got on and said sorry to say we have no units to send you … then there was an awkward pause,” Michelle told NBC Chicago Wednesday, declining to share her name or face while her would-be robbers are still on the loose.

‘Magic David called’: David Copperfield repeatedly contacted Jeffrey Epstein

The message pads appear a little faded, but the handwriting on the spiral-bound notebooks is clear enough.

Staff at Jeffrey Epstein’s mansion in Florida’s Palm Beach used the pads to jot down the names of the people who had called the financier, and between 2004 and 2005, one well-known person appeared to be calling persistently.

Not Prince Andrew or Bill Gates, or even Bill Clinton, the former US president, though all of them have come under a spotlight over their relationships with the disgraced billionaire.

The name on the pads is one that – until recently – has had far less scrutiny: David Copperfield.

A 60% interest rate wasn’t enuff???

Harold the Mortgage Closer accused of charging ‘vulnerable’ people interest rates up to 76 per cent

Ontario is moving — again — to shut down Harold the Mortgage Closer, alleging he has for years carried out a scheme that charged “vulnerable” people up to 76 per cent interest on mortgages.

Enforcement action by the Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario comes on the heels of a Toronto Star investigation into a mortgage deal that Harold Gerstel and his companies had with the late Judy Allen, a senior who eventually lost her North York bungalow to Gerstel.

The regulator says it has now looked more deeply into Gerstel’s activities and found five other cases. Among them, situations in which, the regulator alleges, Gerstel’s effective interest rate was as high as 76 per cent. Canada’s Criminal Code has set 60 per cent as the highest legal interest rate allowed.

Customers are fed up with anti-theft measures at stores. Retailers say organized crime is to blame

Susan Dennison recently had an unsettling experience at her local grocery store, a Loblaw-owned Fortinos in Burlington, Ont.

Just as she was leaving, the wheels on her shopping cart locked up — making it immobile.

She said a store employee rushed over and demanded to see her receipt.

I find self-checkout to be the worst “advance” in retail. Costco bill check is a minor annoyance. But I do recommend you check grocery bills for billing errors, I have caught several including one from Costco in just the past 6 months. Not huge mistakes maybe 30 bucks in total. My local Farmboy is not to be trusted, and I wonder if it’s as I suspect their “Foreign Student” hiring practices. A constant turnover in staff can’t help.

Sadiq Khan thinks knife crime is a joke

The old Latin invocation to not speak ill of the dead is one of the oldest and most famous aphorisms in Western culture. But in London, in 2024, it has become increasingly acceptable among certain circles to mockingly dismiss and ignore the dead. Spiralling violent crime has become an unlikely source of amusement for not only London’s newly re-elected mayor, Labour’s Sadiq Khan, but also for many of his elite endorsers.

British Columbia to bar those guilty of serious crimes from changing names

Canada’s westernmost province has says it will stop people who committed serious crimes from changing their names, following revelations that a child-killer tried to keep his new identity secret.

British Columbia’s health minister said on Monday his government would introduce legislation to amend the province’s name act.

“Allowing these individuals to hide their identity through a name change is extremely troubling to victims and their families and can result in safety concerns for members of the public,” said Adrian Dix. The new prohibition would apply to adults, as well as offenders under 18 but who are convicted and sentenced as adults.

Four people killed, including a baby and his grandparents. A horrific head-on collision on Canada’s busiest highway that could have been even more deadly, according to eyewitnesses. All caused by a driver fleeing police after allegedly holding up a liquor store.

The driver, international student Gagandeep Singh of Milton, Ont., was out on bail for multiple charges of theft and robbery. According to police, he was also under investigation for carjacking and subject to a driving ban. The case sparked outrage not just because it took the lives of three innocent people, but because it feels like this was a tragedy waiting to happen.
