“Disinformation”

While many major media outlets such as CNN have recently announced large layoffs, one journalistic beat is still booming. Call it the Disinformation Desk. The Washington Post has created a new position exclusively reporting on “health disinformation,” which includes “the forces promoting scientific and medical disinformation on subjects such as vaccines, drugs, nutritional supplements and health-care treatments.” National Public Radio hosts an entire “Disinformation Team” whose mission is broad: “From the lies about the 2020 election to the growing influence of anti-vaccine activists, to the enduring influence of climate-change denialism, lies and conspiracy theories have seeped into nearly all aspects of modern-day life, both in the US and around the globe.”

KNOWLEDGE is power, explained Michel Foucault, and the powerful are unwilling to share it. Consider the allegedly lurid activities of President Joe Biden’s son, lurking on his misplaced laptop. Consider the multitude of VIPs who visited underage sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein’s island (the trial of accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell was not televised, and the clients for whom she trafficked victims has remained secret). Consider use of the Emergency Act to quash the Canadian truckers’ protest, and the redacted documents provided to the official inquiry on this extraordinary decision.  We, the ordinary people, are only an edited version of truth. 

CLAIM: Hooters is shutting down and rebranding.

AP’S ASSESSMENT: False. A spokesperson for the restaurant chain told The Associated Press that this claim has “no validity” and that its concept “is here to stay.” The posts are misrepresenting a 2017 article that discussed some U.S. locations closing between 2012 and 2016, as well as changes the company made to its menu and decor more than a decade ago and a spin-off concept that opened in 2017.

David Suzuki is retiring from The Nature of Things to focus on activism and calling out ‘BS’

After 44 years of hosting CBC’s The Nature of Things, David Suzuki’s tenure will be coming to an end. While the upcoming season will be his last, that doesn’t necessarily mean the public will see or hear less from the iconic — and sometimes controversial — Canadian environmentalist.

“This is the most important time in my life,” Suzuki announced Sunday in an interview on The National with host Ian Hanomansing. “I hate to call it retirement. I’m just moving on.”

I didn’t even know it was still on, let alone Suzuki still hosted.
