Germany sees record number of politically motivated crimes
Germany recorded 58,916 cases of politically motivated crime in 2022, an increase of some 7% compared with the previous year, according to figures released on Tuesday.
Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said right-wing extremism remained the greatest threat to German democracy, with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the COVID-19 pandemic also cited as important factors for the rise in politically motivated crime.
A significant increase was also recorded in crimes and acts of violence by the far-right Reichsbürger (citizens of the Reich) movement.
Too much intellectual property from Canadian universities ends up in foreign hands
Some prominent Canadian universities, including McGill, the University of Toronto, the University of Waterloo and the University of British Columbia, have drawn criticism for their researchers’ continuing collaborations with Chinese telecom giant Huawei – partnerships that transfer Canadian-funded intellectual property offshore.
But the case of Huawei is not an isolated one. Judging from our recent research, more than half of industry-directed intellectual property (IP) that Canadian universities generate is assigned to foreign companies. And not all those companies operate within the ambit of what could be described as friendly democracies.

Charlottesville torch marchers face criminal charges six years later
Nearly six years after an infamous far-right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, three demonstrators have been indicted on felony counts.
The men are charged with burning an object with the intent to intimidate.
Hundreds of protesters carrying torches marched at the start of the “Unite the Right” rally in August 2017.
The events brought together far-right and white-nationalist groups. One protester was killed in the violence that followed.

RCMP alleges ‘major’ cache of firearms, neo-Nazi material found in home west of Montreal; charges laid
Two brothers are facing several firearms charges after a “very significant” stash of guns and ammunition was allegedly found in a home west of Montreal, according the RCMP. Officers also allegedly found neo-Nazi material inside the residence.
The police force’s Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET) raided a home in the off-island suburb of Vaudreuil-Dorion last November after receiving a tip from the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).
The CBSA had information that the accused were buying several weapons from legitimate and illegal sources online in order to sell them on the black market, the RCMP alleged.

UK Anti-Terror Programme Lists Reading 1984 as a Sign of “Far-Right” Extremism
Reading George Orwell’s 1984 or Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World among dozens of classic books and television shows is a sign that you could be a far-right extremist, a leaked document from a UK anti-terrorism programme reportedly claims.
A 2019 document said to have leaked from the UK’s much-criticised Prevent anti-terrorism programme has claimed that someone reading George Orwell’s 1984 or Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World should be viewed as potential warning signs of extremism, with the internal paper listing a wide range of other seminal pieces of media as being red flags indicating someone may hold radical views.
Oregon, a hotbed of extremism, seeks to curb paramilitaries
… Opponents say the law would infringe on rights to freely associate and to bear arms.
The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Dacia Grayber, a Democrat from suburban Portland, said the proposed reforms “would make it harder for private paramilitaries to operate with impunity throughout Oregon, regardless of their ideology.”
But dozens of conservative Oregonians, in written testimony, have expressed suspicion that the Democrat-controlled Legislature aims to pass a bill restricting the right to assemble and that the legislation would target right-wing armed groups like the Proud Boys and Patriot Prayer, but not black-clad anarchists who have vandalized downtown Portland and battled police.

‘Terror granny’ accused of plotting German coup
Members of a far-right group headed by a 75-year-old woman face charges of high treason for allegedly planning to kidnap the health minister and overthrow the government.
The plot, which sounds as outlandish as a separate, widely reported scheme uncovered in December allegedly headed by the aristocrat Heinrich XIII Prinz Reuss, has led to charges being brought by Germany’s federal prosecutor against a retired teacher, named only as Elisabeth R, and four men. All were arrested last year after obtaining two AK-47 assault rifles and four Glock handguns.

Policy issues, especially energy and climate change, are being weaponized in Canada for political gain at the expense of national unity, he added.
“The realities of the business models of media and social media in both countries move people and empower people that engage with the radical right and left,” Bremmer said.

How Twitter Rigged the Covid Debate
The platform suppressed true information from doctors and public-health experts that was at odds with U.S. government policy.
I had always thought a primary job of the press was to be skeptical of power—especially the power of the government. But during the Covid-19 pandemic, I and so many others found that the legacy media had shown itself to largely operate as a messaging platform for our public health institutions. Those institutions operated in near total lockstep, in part by purging internal dissidents and discrediting outside experts.
Twitter became an essential alternative. It was a place where those with public health expertise and perspectives at odds with official policy could air their views—and where curious citizens could find such information. This often included other countries’ responses to Covid that differed dramatically from our own.
Polar bears vanishing from ‘polar bear capital of the world’ in Canada
Polar bears are disappearing fast from the western part of Hudson Bay on the southern tip of the Canadian Arctic, according to a government survey.
The report said there had been a dramatic decline in the of number of female bears and cubs in particular.
Researchers have flown over the region, which includes the town of Churchill, a tourist destination touted as the “polar bear capital of the world”, every five years to count the number of bears and extrapolate population trends.
