Murder by Kalashnikov: the drug war stalking Marseilles

Three months before the charred remains of Fatma Khaldi’s 22-year-old son, Reda, were found in a burnt-out car in the countryside near Marseilles, he told her something she will never forget.

“Unfortunately I am trapped in this world,” he said. “The only way out is prison or death.”

He was killed along with two other men one evening in December 2020, in one of the most brutal single episodes in a war between Kalashnikov-wielding drug gangs for control of France’s third city.

Crisis in France: Author Writes on Islamism, Needs Police Protection

Islamists have leveled death threats at an influential French academic, forcing her to live under police protection after writing a hard-hitting book about the Muslim Brotherhood’s strategy to Islamize Europe. Muslim activists have, as expected, denounced her work as “Islamophobic,” but some Islamists and non-Muslim leftwing academics have on this occasion taken the invective to another level by falsely comparing the scrutiny of Islamism to Nazism.

Florence Bergeaud-Blackler, an anthropologist at the French National Center for Scientific Research (Centre national de la recherche scientifique, CNRS), one of the leading research institutions in Europe, is a long-time observer of the Islamist landscape in the West. In January 2023, she published her magnum opus, The Brotherhood and its Networks: The Investigation (Le Frérisme et ses reseaux, L’Enquête), a 400-page book that meticulously dissects the Muslim Brotherhood’s efforts to spread Islamism in Europe.

Better Designation of Muslim Brotherhood Actors in Western Societies Needed to Combat Extremist Currents

The Muslim Brotherhood (MB) was founded in Egypt in 1928. From there, the ideology traveled with its followers over the years, who spread it to new places — particularly the West. However, it has been observed that authorities in Western societies often deal with Muslim Brotherhood members and supporters differently depending on their country of origin.

In Canada the Trudeau government welcomes the Muslim Brotherhood as an ally in their war against Canadians.

Macron has left Marseille at the mercy of violent drug gangs

Five months and counting until France hosts the Rugby World Cup. For England supporters, the tournament kicks off at the stylish Stade Vélodrome in Marseille against Argentina on 9 September, one of six fixtures hosted by the Mediterranean city. Scotland take on South Africa the day after the England game, and two of the tournament’s quarter-finals will also be in Marseille, as they were in 2007 when France last hosted the World Cup.

That year was a peaceful one by Marseille’s standards, with only seven murders attributed to gangland wars. There was a new president, Nicolas Sarkozy, who had campaigned on a ‘tough on crime’ ticket, and that, plus the hosting of rugby’s showpiece event, might have had an effect.

Taiwan: Baerbock, Macron comments raise questions on EU ties

First, France’s Macron said Europe shouldn’t follow the US on Taiwan. Then, Germany’s top diplomat said France’s China policy reflected the policy of the EU as a whole. How are these comments seen in Taiwan?

France’s Emmanuel Macron has prompted backlash by saying that Europeans should not be “followers” of either US or China when it comes to Taiwan and urging for more EU autonomy in international policy.

His statements came as China was conducting a massive three-day military drill around the self-ruled island, which Beijing sees as a part of its own territory. On Wednesday, Macron said he was standing by his comments and that “being an ally does not mean being a vassal” of the US. At the same time, he emphasized that France supported “the status quo in Taiwan” and was in favor of solving the situation peacefully.

Carnage in France: Battles on the streets of Paris as riot police fire tear gas and charge at pension protesters

Carnage is erupting on the streets of France tonight after French President Emmanuel Macron’s flagship pension reform passed a vital constitutional milestone despite months of disruptive strikes and protests.

The legislation, which pushes the age at one can draw a full pension to 64 from 62, is deeply unpopular in France and has triggered huge disruption.

After the decision was announced by the Constitutional Council on Friday, largescale protests began around the country and quickly turned violent.

French protesters barricade Constitutional Council with rubbish bins

Protesters barricaded the entrance to France’s Constitutional Council with rubbish bins on Thursday, as people took to the streets around the country over Emmanuel Macron’s pension reforms.

Police expect around 400,000 to 600,000 people to take part nationwide. That would be fewer than half the nearly 1.3 million reached in March at the height of the protests against the reforms, which include raising the retirement age to 64 from 62.

Macron says Europe must not be ‘follower’ of US, China on Taiwan

French President Emmanuel Macron said in an interview published Sunday that Europe must not be a “follower” of either the US or China on Taiwan, saying that the bloc risks entanglement in “crises that aren’t ours”.

His comments risk riling Washington and highlight divisions in the European Union over how to approach China, as the US steps up confrontation with its closest rival and Beijing draws closer to Russia in the wake of its invasion of Ukraine.

Crucifixes rise across France in message that ‘this is a Christian country’

Balanced on a tractor fork, the crucified Christ rises. Those gathered to watch sing hymns, gazing up at a five-metre cross towering above them as it is lowered into a stone plinth on the roadside.

The scene is not common in a nation where the separation of church and state was enshrined under a 1905 law that made it illegal to erect new religious symbols in public spaces.

Well done. But late to the field?

Au revoir, France!

France now has more practicing Muslims than Catholics.

Sonia Backès, French secretary of state for citizenship, has just said that “political Islam wants to bring the Republic to its knees”. If only it were the République…

The French National Institute of Statistics has just provided us with numbers that tell of an unprecedented change of civilization in the history of a country that is the cradle of European culture. It is truly historic: there are more practicing Muslims than practicing Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 in France. Reading the latest report from Insee, the French Statistical Institute, helps us understand the change of civilization we are experiencing in Europe.

France: A ‘Field of Ruins’

Paris, France. March 23, 8 p.m. A demonstration took place; as usual now, riots followed the demonstration and swept through the center of the city, then to other cities. Cars were burned, shop windows smashed, garbage dumpsters set on fire. A garbage collectors’ strike began two weeks earlier; nearly ten thousand tons of garbage, still strewn on the sidewalks, almost completely block some streets. The proliferation of rats threatens disease. Oil refineries are shut down; gas stations are running dry. More demonstrations took place March 28 — and more riots.

France, once again, is on the verge of chaos.

French envoy: Canada should link with Europe, surpass ‘weak’ military engagement

OTTAWA – France’s ambassador to Canada says Ottawa must choose between tying itself entirely to Washington or broadening its links to partner more with Europe — while also calling out Canada’s “weak” military engagement.

“This nagging question of the future American commitment offers, in any case more than ever, the opportunity for Europe, France and Canada to play a role together,” Michel Miraillet said in a French-language speech Tuesday to the Montreal Council on Foreign Relations.

Given France’ & Europe’s internal Islamic rot I think we should take a pass though Junior will find it appealing and he’ll just love this…

The Anniversary of Mireille Knoll’s Murder and France’s Jewish Exodus

March 23 marked the anniversary of the murder of Mireille Knoll, an elderly Jewish woman and a Holocaust survivor who was living in Paris. Her murder was one of many brutal, antisemitic attacks in France over the past several years.

On March 23, 2018, two men, Yacine Mihoub and Alex Carrimbacus—both Knoll’s neighbors—entered her apartment, stabbed her eleven times, and lit her body on fire. Allegedly it was a botched robbery that turned into a murder. But, during the investigation and trial, it became evident that antisemitism was a factor in Knoll’s murder.

France minister: ‘Over 1,000 officers injured in unrest’

More than 1,000 law enforcement officers and firefighters have been injured in demonstrations and riots across France, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin told local media on Sunday.

In an interview with France’s Journal du Dimanche, Darmanin said since March 16, “1093 police officers, gendarmes and firefighters have been injured.” He added that there have also been “2,579 arson attacks and 316 attacks on public buildings.”

He did not reveal how many protesters have been injured but told the weekly newspaper that 36 officers were being probed on charges of excessive use of force.
