Carney’s shift on Palestinian statehood would not have happened as quickly under Trudeau, insiders say

Just over a year ago, the Liberal caucus was in turmoil over the government’s responses to the war between Israel and Hamas. Factions broke publicly with then-prime minister Justin Trudeau and one MP even threatened to quit.

But the reaction has been far more tempered to Prime Minister Mark Carney’s announcement Wednesday that Canada intends to recognize a Palestinian state this fall, a major shift in government policy.

Insiders say that’s a reflection of the current scale of the crisis in Gaza, but also a different prime minister at a different political time.

Open Disdain for Jews and Israel Is the Status Quo in Carney’s Liberal Party

Carney speaks at a Muslim Brotherhood function

On July 30th 2025, Canada’s Prime Minister, Mark Carney, declared that “the peaceful co-existence of Israeli and Palestinian states [is] the only roadmap for a secure and prosperous future” and confirmed that “Canada will recognize a Palestinian state” at the upcoming UN General Assembly in September.

Unfortunately, despite the fact that his decision is unequivocally appalling to any defenders of democracy, human rights, and The Good, Carney’s recent comments are not at all surprising or even unexpected.

France suspends Gaza evacuations after student antisemitism row

France has suspended its programme for receiving Palestinians fleeing Gaza.

The freeze will be in place while authorities investigate a Palestinian student in France who has been accused of making antisemitic remarks online, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot has said.

The 25-year-old woman was on a scholarship in northern France’s city of Lille and will have to leave the country after her university withdrew her accreditation.

Auschwitz museum orders visiting Israeli soldiers to remove flags

A delegation of Israeli soldiers visiting the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum have been ordered to remove national flags during an annual ceremony.

In what is believed to be the first time such an order has occurred at the event, the “humiliating” incident was blamed on “antisemitism and an attempt to reshape the historical narrative” by a member of the delegation.

Days after its release, Ottawa calls report on lethal exports to Israel ‘flawed’

OTTAWA — Ottawa is insisting it hasn’t sent lethal weapons to Israel, days after the release of a report stating Israeli customs data indicates Canadian arms are still being exported there regularly.

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand says items that the Israel Tax Authority identified as “bullets” were actually “paintball-style projectiles” that cannot be used in combat, even though the bullets were identified by the authority as “munitions of war and parts thereof.”

Montreal Pride organizers have barred a Jewish LGBTQ2+ group from marching in this year’s parade, accusing it of “spreading hateful discourse.”

Canada’s recognition of Palestinian state will likely have minimal impact without U.S. support, analysts say

The Canadian government’s plan to recognize a Palestinian state in September reflects Ottawa’s deep frustration with the Israeli government and sends a strong message that it supports a two-state solution, but analysts say it likely will have little impact without U.S. support.

Prime Minister Mark Carney made the announcement on Wednesday, saying that Canada intends to recognize a Palestinian state at the United Nations General Assembly. He said this is predicated on the Palestinian Authority’s commitment to important reforms, including president Mahmoud Abbas’s promise to hold general elections in 2026, in which Hamas could not take part, and the demilitarization of the Palestinian state.

Gaza Starvation Photos Tell a Thousand Lies

Hamas propaganda exploits seriously ill children, and Western media go along.

Over the weekend, I embedded with the Israel Defense Forces in Gaza, where I saw the enormous quantities of humanitarian aid the United Nations has been refusing to distribute. What struck me most were the thousands upon thousands of pounds of baby food, baking under the Middle Eastern sun—jar after jar of mashed carrots, pureed potatoes and fruit blends. This food could have gone to children like Mohammed al-Mutawaaq.

Canada’s recognition of Palestinian state ‘dangerously premature,’ Jewish groups say

“It is deeply concerning that the Canadian government does not link statehood recognition to the removal of Hamas and the return of Israeli hostages,” Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs CEO Noah Shack said Thursday. The CIJA represents Jewish Federations across Canada.

On Wednesday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada intends to recognize Palestinian statehood at the United Nations General Assembly in September.

Conservatives Say Ottawa’s Palestine State Recognition ‘Sends the Wrong Message’

Conservatives say Prime Minister Mark Carney’s decision to recognise Palestinian statehood at the U.N. this September “sends the wrong message.”

In a statement issued July 30 following Carney’s announcement, the Conservatives said that agreeing to a Palestinian state in the wake of the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks on Israel tells extremists “that violence and terror are effective tools for achieving political objectives.”

Canada’s plan to recognize Palestinian statehood prompts swift, divided reaction

A national Muslim advocacy group called Wednesday a “historic day” after Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada would formally recognize Palestinian statehood.

But a national Jewish organization said the decision was “deeply concerning” and would embolden the terrorist group Hamas.

With the announcement, Canada joins a growing list of countries around the world to formally recognize Palestinian statehood.

Star Wants Blood: The RCMP says it’s been looking into potential war crimes in the Israel-Hamas conflict for a year. Why has it seemed so quiet?

In February 2023, less than a year into the RCMP’s investigation into possible war crimes stemming from the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, Cpl. Kate Walaszczyk was trying to “manage expectations.”

It can take years before these kinds of probes result in prosecutions, she told CBC News, but the initial steps are critical. The RCMP was first focused on preserving physical and digital evidence, as well as gathering victims’ stories.

“Let’s say a conflict finishes. Individuals don’t come forward about those allegations until years later, and then evidence is lost. Memories are lost, all those things are lost,” said Walaszczyk, who was described as an investigator in the RCMP’s Ukraine war crimes unit. “We need it to be robust, so that there aren’t gaps … When you don’t gather the evidence properly, these things fall apart. And then what’s the point?”

Diplomatic Terrorism?: France’s Recognition of an Imaginary Palestinian State

On 24 July 2025, France announced its decision to recognize the existence of a “Palestinian state” in September. President Emmanuel Macron portrayed this move as an act of “justice” and “peace.” In reality, however, this recognition constitutes a geopolitical fiction — contrary to international law, flagrantly at odds with the facts on the ground, and laden with profoundly harmful moral implications.

US allies break with Trump to force diplomatic shift on Gaza

As Canada joins France and the UK in announcing plans to recognise a Palestinian state, the US is standing firmly with Israel – but does Trump have a long-term plan for Gaza’s future?

Of all history’s declarations about the Middle East, one that may be less prominent in the global collective memory was in Tokyo in November 2023.

Then-US Secretary of State Antony Blinken laid out a series of principles for the “day after” the war in Gaza at a meeting of the G7, a group of the world’s most powerful countries.

Islamophobia Tsar says Mideast war is bringing back anti-Muslim tropes from 9/11

OTTAWA — Ottawa’s special representative on combating Islamophobia says she’s alarmed by a recent revival of decades-old tropes about Muslims supporting terrorist violence.

Amira Elghawaby also said Canadians should not be reluctant to speak out for the rights of one group because of a fear of being accused of ignoring the plight of another.

“In a country as pluralistic and as diverse as Canada, we should be able to get this right,” Elghawaby told The Canadian Press.
